WHEN BIGGER ISN’T BETTER

Size Doesn’t Matter — Profits Do Some. Entrepreneurs are finding that slower growth helps them deliver better earnings, quality, and morale. By Ellyn Sprains and Verne Harnish Imagine, for a moment, a highly esteemed executive like Intel’s Andy Grove or Avon’s Andrea Jung answering questions about his or her company’s prospects for 2004. New products? Yes—a bunch. Position in the industry? One of the leaders. Projected sales growth? “Um ... we’re trying to slow down our growth for the next couple of years.”

Rapid revenue growth has been yoked to power and prestige in the business world for so long that the idea of deliberately decelerating your company seems laughable. Public companies have for decades been compelled to quench Wall Street’s thirst for impressive quarterly sales gains, of course. But there are a host of other well-founded rationales for fast growth that can be reduced to one simple idea: Expand or die.

So with the economy ramping up, it’s worth listening to an interesting collection of company owners—a minority, to be sure, but a growing one—who are becoming proponents of slow, controlled growth. We confess that at first we thought “slow-growth advocate” was a new term for “loser”—someone who can’t cut it in a hypercompetitive business climate. But closer examination reveals that many of these iconoclasts reap benefits that are often at odds with an all-growth-all-the-time mentality—higher quality, a more manageable and pleasant workplace, and greater profitability.

It seems to amaze business owners that the bottom line matters more than the top line. They’ve been conditioned to chase every additional dollar of revenue

so tenaciously that they often neglect to evaluate its effect on profits. Among the traps small-business owners can fall into: taking on high levels of debt to fuel growth, making costly acquisitions, and accepting unprofitable work just to get a foot in the door with some big, prestigious customer.

That’s not to say that you shouldn’t strive to build a FORTUNE 500 company. But if that’s your goal, successful enterprise builders say, you should look closely at your growth potential. About 95% of the 20.8 million no farm businesses in this country have fewer than 20 employees, according to the most recent census data.

The ones that do usually have fast growth and big revenue targets encoded in their DNA. From the very beginning, Sam Walton’s formula for growing Wal-Mart was to locate stores in underserved rural markets and to offer super-low prices driven by state-of-the-art distribution.

Sometimes fast growth is needed to achieve efficiencies. Manufacturers often see production costs drop dramatically as sales volume increases. Companies selling technological products like digital cameras need global distribution to cover high R&D costs and generate quick sales before their gadgets become obsolete.

Successful entrepreneurs emphasize that the key, when deciding how rapidly to grow, is to ask yourself some hard questions. Will your business model work around the country or the globe? Expansion outside your region could bring in more revenue but also subject you to cutthroat pricing that will wreck your margins.

Ask yourself if a growth-at-any-price approach is creating unnecessary risks.

Hundreds of CEO’s have discovered that most mergers fail, because of culture clashes, benefits that don’t materialize, or overpaying.

Far from stagnating, entrepreneurs who de-emphasize sales growth often bring more energy to boosting the quality of their goods and services.

Each may find it makes sense to speed growth in the future. But many owners prefer the slower track indefinitely, says Harvard’s Hart. “Most entrepreneurs have chosen what they’re doing because there’s a lot of personal involvement, and they have the ability to pace their work and integrate it into their lives.”

CITY COUNCIL - CLEANING UP THEIR ACT

The City Council of Klerksdorp (Department of Community, Health and Civil Engineering Services) have embarked on a massive campaign to clean up and eradicate all Illegal Dumping Sites.

Ms J Masilo - Departmental Head of Community Services is serious about this situation. The department are appealing and pleading with the community to assist The Council in this matter. We remind residents of Klerksdorp that the penalty for illegal dumping is a hefty some of R 500.00 and will be enforced should any person be caught dumping in any area other than the allocated dumping sites which have been established within the Klerksdorp area. These sites have been conveniently allocated in easily accessible areas for the convenience of residents. It is imperative that they are utilized by all residents. There are structured sites in Klerksdorp, Stilfontein, Orkney and Hartbeesfontein. Our biggest problem areas at the moment are Dowkensville, Ysterspruit Road and the N12 Treasure Route on the Wolmeranstad side. These sites are currently being removed.

“We must stop residents who are polluting our town. We will be monitoring these two areas on a daily basis “ were the words of Mr Victor Muller who was instrumental in the process that led Klerksdorp to winning the prestigious award received last year namely The Cleanest City in the North West. The City Council would like to thank the companies who have joined forces with us to remove the illegal dumping sites. They have allocated machinery at no cost to assist in this campaign. Thank you to Tigane Boumateriaal and Lineteck for their huge contribution towards this campaign. Residents of Klerksdorp need to become more aware of their environment and be proud of the areas they reside in. We would like to encourage The City of People to join hands in cleaning up this city.

The City Council of Klerksdorp are cleaning up their act let’s get behind them and do our bit for the environment. Help us to help you!

SMOKIE LAAT KLERKSDORP ROOK!

WHY SHOULD PEOPLE DONATE SAFE BLOOD?

Safe blood saves lives. Every day, thousands of people would die if others did not donate their blood. Blood is composed of several different elements, each of which fulfils a particular function. These can be used for specific purposes so that each unit of blood can be used for more than one patient. In South Africa, one donation may be used to save up to four lives.

Transfusions are given to.

•Patients undergoing surgical operations

•Patients with cancer or leukaemia

•Children with severe anaemia

•Women: to treat blood loss during childbirth

WHY DOES SAFE BLOOD START WITH ME?

Blood is the most precious gift that anyone can give to another person it is The Gift of Life. A decision to donate your blood can save the life of one or even several people.

Patients who need blood have the right to receive blood that is as safe as possible and that will cause them no harm. If you think that your blood may be unsafe, another person’s life may depend on your blood may be unsafe, another person’s life may depend on your decision not to donate blood.

Remember, you or a member of your family may need the gift of blood one day. You would expect to receive safe blood- others have an equal right to know that the blood they are given is safe.

“To give blood is a privilege- to receive SAFE BLOOD is a right.”

Acupuncture

 h

Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used medical procedures in the world.

Acupuncture Theories

Traditional Chinese medicine theorizes that there are more than 2,000 acupuncture points on the human body, and that these connect with 12 main and 8 secondary pathways called meridians. Meridians conduct energy, or qi (pronounced “chee”), throughout the body.Qi is believed to regulate spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical balance and to be influenced by the opposing forces of yin and yang. When yin and yang are balanced, they work together with the natural flow of qi to help the body achieve and maintain health. Acupuncture balance yin and yang, keep the normal flow of energy unblocked, and maintain or restore health to the body and mind.

Increasingly, acupuncture is complementing conventional therapies. By providing both acupuncture and certain conventional anesthetic drugs, some doctors have found it possible to achieve a state of complete pain relief for some patients.

Acupuncture and You

The use of acupuncture, like the use of many other complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatments, has produced a good deal of anecdotal evidence. Much of this evidence comes from people who report their own successful use of the treatment. If a treatment appears to be safe and patients report recovery from their illness or condition after using it, others may decide to use the treatment.

Lifestyle, age, physiology, and other factors combine to make every person different. A treatment that works for one person may not work for another who has the very same condition. You as a health care consumer, should discuss any CAM treatment, including acupuncture, with your health care practitioner. Do not rely on a diagnosis of disease by an acupuncture practitioner who does not have substantial conventional medical training. If you have received a diagnosis from a doctor and have had little or no success using conventional medicine, you may wish to ask your doctor whether acupuncture might help.

How to care for your swimming pool

  hello

A swimming pool provides the benefits of relaxation, pleasure and the healthy exercise as well as point of visual focus when built in a garden at home. However, water in a swimming pool is constantly being contaminated, by bacteria and dirt carried in by bathers and from the environment, it is also a natural environment for algae. Treated appropriately for safety ensuring that the water quality approximates that of potable water.

Here are same tips to assist pool owners manage the hygiene and appearance of their swimming pools.

CONTROL OF Ph

The balance between acidity and alkalinity is referred to as pH. Alkaline conditions are represented by values above 7.0, increasing in strength as the number become greater. The ideal pH for the pool water is generally between 7.2 and 7.6. Regular use of a test kit to establish ph levels is very important.

Decrease pH by adding Hydrochloric Acid. (When purchasing pool acid choose acid with the lightest coloration).

Increase pH by adding Soda Ash. Always use small doses checking 2 hourly to gradually adjust the pH either up or down.

SANITATION

Adequate sanitation and pH control are probably the two most important aspects of pool water treatment. Various approaches can be used to sanitize pool water

Such as:

• Chlorines

• Chlorine Donors

• Stabillsed Chlorine Tablets

• Chlorine Tablets Unstabillsed

• Calcium Hypochlorite Granules

(Unstabillsed)

• Sodium Hypochlorite (Liquid Chlorine)

WATER BALANCE

Many problems occur as a result of an imbalance in pool water. Factors that commonly affect pool water are as follows:

• Chlorine level

• pH level

• Calcium Hardness

• Total Alkalinity

• Cyanuric Acid level

• Metal content

• Total dissolved solids

ALGAE

Algae are extremely resistant forms of growth, and are able to withstand most of man’s effort to kill them. Certain forms of algae can be killed, but not eradicated completely, because Algae is constantly perpetuated by nature.

Three main forms of Algae in swimming pool, namely:-

• Green Algae

• Black Algae

• Mustard Algae

Green “Algae”

Is either free floating, which is mild form, or green growing algae found on pool steps and on mosaic tiles.

Black “Algae”

Most resistant of the above three forms. Usually seen in the deep end of pools, on the shady side first. They can be brushed off in the initial stage but brushing alone will not kill this algae. Black Algae requires a powerful algaecide, like Two 11 and vigorous, regular brushing.

Mustard Algae

Appears in sheet form on the walls of the swimming pool. This form of Algae is the consequence of under losing when sanitizing a pool, the cells are injured but not killed, and they change color and develop a higher resistance to treatment.

FILTER FACTS

Filtration plays an essential part in achieving the perfect swimming pool. No mater what chemicals are used, without an efficient filter the pool water can never be kept clean. The purpose of the filter is to remove foreign material such as dust, leaves, algae, ect. from the swimming pool. Filters will get clogged periodically. This

will show on the filter’s pressure gauge. When this happens the filter must be cleaned. In order to continue operating efficiently.

Lost Treasure Nursery

As summer slowly gives way to autumn, it is now the time to prepare your garden for the coming cold winter months. March is the time to start preparing your beds for spring-flowering bulbs and winter flowering annuals and you can start lifting and dividing those perennials, which are becoming overcrowded. Poppies thrive in full sun. They will tolerate shade, but must have full morning sun. They do best in friable, well-drained, lime-free soil. Primulas do best in semi-shaded or lightly shaded position. Too much sun and the colour of the flowers will bleach. Pansies do best in a sunny location, but will also flower in semi-shade. Sweet Peas can still be shown in this month and Namaqualand daisies, calendula and bokbaai vygies.

Plant Greetings!!

hello

What you should now when signing a lease

Lease agreements can either be verbal or written. When around a lease, a landlord and a tenant can negotiate around the contents of a lease, the rental housing sector. It must conform to that legislation. Important content in a lease:

The following should be in all lease agreements:-

• A full name, physical address, and contact telephone numbers of the landlord and the   tenant.

• The identity number of the landlord or the company registration number of landlord and the tenant.

• The physical address of the dwelling.

• The amount of the deposit to be paid (legislation suggests two months equivalent of your monthly rental).

• The amount of rent to be paid, the date when rent will be paid, the place and the person rental will be paid to and the rent increment rates and dates for the increment

• The duration of the lease and the notice period of the lease when it lease expires and cancellation.

• It should be stated whether tenant has the right to renew the lease when it expires and the notification period for the renewal of the lease.

• The purpose for which the dwelling will be used for (e.g. residential only)

• The maximum number of persons entitled to stay in the dwelling. If a tenant wishes to sublet the flat it should be done only after approval has been received from the landlord.

• The physical address of the landlord and tenant for the service of all notices and court documents in case of a court process.

• If a landlord changes for revenue stamps, the lease should have such stamps attached to it.

• If a landlord does not give a tenant a copy of the signed lease it will be presumed by law that a written lease exists between the landlord and the tenant. A lease agreement must not include the following:-

• Impose penalties for late payment of rent.

• Exclude liability of either party for falling to comply with duties under the lease, legislation and the law

• The lease must not limit or prevent either party from using the normal rights of recourse against each other if there is failure to comply with any duty under the lease legislation and law.

• Present either party from being a member of a landlord’s tenants or tenants association. When moving into the dwelling check-list (checking the conditions of the dwelling) It is important that any person renting a dwelling should first make an inspection of the dwelling together with the landlord before moving in. A list of defects should be drawn and the landlord should be given the list at lease 7 days after occupation. The tenant and the landlord should agree on the date when items on the inspection list will be fixed. An example of the checklist will

be as follows:-

Room

Condition

Description

Kitchen

Poor

Cupboards doors falling off, cockroaches all over the place

Bathroom

Poor

Basin taps leaking, lose tiles on the floor, shower glass door cracked, toilet not flushing.

Bedroom 1

Fair

Key missing from the door.

Bedroom 2

Poor

Ceiling falling off, paint peeling off, dirty carpet

Paying a Deposit A deposit is money that is paid by the tenant to the landlord at the commencement of the lease. The money is held by the landlord as security in the event that money is owed to the landlord at the end of the least. Legislation suggests that a deposit should not be more than two months rental. If rental escalates landlord may required a tenant to increase the deposit to the equivalent of two months rental. When a tenant has paid in his/her deposit he/she should be issued with a receipt containing the

Following information:-

• The name of the tenant.

• The name of the landlord.

• The name and signature of the person receiving payment.

• The address of the dwelling.

• The amount paid by the tenant.

• The date on which payment was made.

• The landlord should hold the tenants in a trust account and refund the deposit to the tenant at the end of the lease. A deposit cannot be used as the last month’s rental.

• A landlord must furnish the tenants with a written receipt for all payments received.

• Before vacating the dwelling a landlord and the tenant should inspect the flat together, while referring to the check-list signed before the tenant took occupancy of the dwelling. This way a landlord will not hold the tenant responsible for items on the check-list, which he did not fix as agreed. The tenant will also be liable to all items that were damaged according to the check-list.

• Once there is an agreement on what items need to be fixed the landlord will with fold money that will cover those damages and refund the remaining amount to thetenant.

• If there is an agreement on what to the property the deposit shall be refunded to the tenant within 15 day after vacating the dwelling.

Landlord’s responsibilities

Duties of a Landlord

• A landlord must deliver the dwelling to the tenant in a condition fit for the purpose for which it was let.

• He/She must take reasonable steps to ensure that a tenant enjoys undisturbed use of the dwelling and that no tenant or other person disturbs the tenant during occupation.

• That no one tenant or person conducts an activity within the dwelling, which is, prohibited under the lease, local government ordinance and health and safety regulations.

• The landlord must maintain common property an keep it in good order.

• He/She must maintain the outside of the dwelling or common areas caused by fair wear and tear.

• If a lease has been reduced to writing, the landlord must stamp the lease and give tenant a copy within 21 days of signing the lease by both parties. This will be done provided both parties have agreed to have a written lease.

Tenant’s responsibilities

Duties of the Tenant

Cut the costs of running your home

hello

By now, most new year’s resolutions have been well and truly broken - but one that’s worth reviving is a plan to cut the costs of running your home. The costs of municipal services such as electricity and water are increasing rapidly, says Dr Piet Botha, chairman of the Nation link estate agency group, and they are a major factor in most monthly household budgets today. But fortunately new technology and common sense can help cut these essential costs. “And consistent efforts to cut down on household expenses can deliver significant cumulative savings over a year or two.” For example, if your home has a shower, use it and encourage your children to use it whenever possible instead of taking a bath. A shower uses considerably less water than a bath. In addition, modern low-flow shower heads and taps can cut water usage even more, particularly when rinsing vegetables and dishes, or cleaning your teeth.

Other cost saving measures includes:

* Checking the thermostat on the geyser, which in most cases can be turned down a couple of degrees, resulting in a constant saving of electricity?

* Ensuring that the geyser and hot water pipes are lagged to prevent heat loss and turning the geyser off when you leave the house for any length of time.

* Using cold water washing machine cycles whenever possible, and using the machine – and the dishwasher

– only when you have a full load.

Musso Sports expected to "do well locally"

The fully-imported double-cab version of the Ssangyong Musso, the Musso Sports, has been described as having the luxury of a car with the convenience of a bakkies.

The Musso Sports boasts a number of unique features. It is the only automatic diesel double-cab 4x4 available in South Africa. Its roomy interior (the largest in its class) is coupled with full size rear doors.

The body is muscular with just a hint of flair in its otherwise burly flanks. Its revised grille and clear wraparound headlights and clear glass tail lights complement the package. Wheel arches are bold to accommodate the standard 16" alloy wheels.

Local models are equipped with a functional black facia, and standard features include; air conditioning, adjustable height steering wheel, power steering, electric windows front and rear, remote central locking and remote side mirrors.

On the safety front, the Musso Sports is equipped with ABS, traction control (ABD), a driver's side airbag, pre-tensioned safety belts and side impact protection bars.

The Musso Sports is available with a choice of a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. "Shift-on-the-Fly " is standard.

Powered by the well-known five-cylinder 290TDi engine, built under licence from Mercedes-Benz, the Sports delivers 104Kw at 4 000r/min and 305N.m torque at 2 250r/min.

Urban cycle fuel consumption figures of 10,56 litres per 100 km are claimed for the manual version, and 12 litres per 100 km for the automatic.

The general manager of Ssangyong Motor Distributors in South Africa, Hennie Bekker, said he expected the Musso Sports to 'do well locally'.

"We know that pricing is a contentious issue at the moment and feel confident that the Musso Sports is well priced against its competitors, offering excellent value for money." Bekker said.

The Musso Sports is imported and backed by SsangYong Motor Distributors. It is covered by a three-year / 100 000km factory warranty and three -year / 60 000km maintenance plan. Services are required every 10 000km.
