Staff of the
Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve celebrated the birth of a baby
white rhino-ceros last month.
Although this
isn’t the first newborn for the reserve, every newborn is
greeted with the same enthusiasm. The baby was named
Freedom, to commemorate the 10 years of freedom in our new
democracy.
The white
rhino is the third largest land mammal, massive, stocky and
with a reputation of being not quite as aggressive as the
black rhino. Calves are born early in the dry season after a
gestation period of 16 months and stays with their mothers
for a period of two years, until she gives birth to the next
calve. In spite of their bulk and short, stubby legs, white
rhino can run remarkably fast, but only for very short
distances.
The Executive
Mayor of Klerksdorp, Dr Magome Maseke (bottom), went to take
a look at the newest member of the rhino family at Faan
Meintjies, who has created quite a stir in the community

Saterdag, 20
was.

Skenk bloed.
Red ‘n lewe.
Indien jy só ‘n persoon is … welkom by
Of jy nou ‘n
gaan vakansie hou, jy moet besluite neem oor hoe jy jou lewe
gaan lei.
WAAROOR GAAN
bevalling, of vir ‘n baba.

Academy Award®
winners Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton star in a sparkling
and sophisticated romantic comedy from acclaimed
writer/director Nancy Meyers (What Women Want, The Parent
Trap), which proves that in matters of the heart,
sometimes you can teach an old playboy new tricks. Harry
Sanborn (Nicholson) is a New York music mogul with a libido
much younger than his years. He has the world on a string –
and a string of beautiful young girlfriends to prove it.
During a romantic rendezvous with his newest girlfriend,
Marin (Amanda Peet), at her mother’s Hamptons beach house,
Harry develops chest pains and eventually winds up being
nursed by Marin’s reluctant mother, Erica Barry (Keaton) – a
successful, divorced New York playwright. In the process,
Harry develops more heart pangs – the romantic kind – for
Erica, a woman who is finally right for him in every way.
However, some habits die hard, and when Harry hesitates to
pursue Erica, his charming thirty-something doctor (Reeves)
becomes smitten with her. Harry undergoes a true change of
heart when he fights to win Erica back

hello
Healthy greetings
to all our avid health fanatics out there. We continue our
column this week with useful information on the topic of
protein. Protein has been the most widely-publicized of all
human nutritional needs, and this has led many people to be
obsessed making sure they get enough protein. The problem is
that most South Africans consume in excess of 10 grams of
protein per day, which is three to five time the amount
experts now say is necessary.
This excessive
amount of protein is harmful and more physical problems are
being caused by people consuming too much protein than
people not getting enough protein. Several generations of
school children, doctors and dieticians were taught
incorrectly that we need meat, dairy and eggs for protein.
The meat, dairy and eggs industries funded this ‘nutrition
education’ and it became policy. Much of the evidence used
to support on a claim that animal products are ideal for
meeting human protein needs, was based on a now-discredited
experiment on rats conducted in 1914.
Nutritionists
have drastically altered their thinking about human protein
needs since that infamous rat study. But this updated
knowledge has been very slow in reaching the public. In the
United States, official policy on human protein needs has
changed so drastically that there is no longer even a
minimum daily requirement for protein listed on the latest
nutrition labels. The latest research shows that most people
have more reasons to be concerned about medical problems
caused by consuming too much protein, rather than not
getting enough.
Protein is an
extremely important nutrient, but when we get too much
protein, or protein that we cannot digest, it causes
problems. In his book, ‘Your Health, Your Choice’ Dr Ted
Morter Jr. warns “In our society, one of the principal
sources of physiological toxins is to much protein” It may
come as quite a shock to many people trying to consume as
much protein as possible to read in mayor medical journals
and scientific reports that excess protein has been found to
promote the growth of cancers cells and can cause liver and
kidney disorders, digestive problems, gout, arthritis,
calcium deficiencies (including osteoporosis) and other
harmful mineral imbalances.
It has been
known for decades that population consuming high-protein,
meat-based diets have higher cancer rates and lower
life-spans (averaging low as 30 to 40 years), and compare to
cultures subsisting on low-protein vegetarian diets (some with
average life-span of more than 90 years).Numerous studies
have found that animals and humans subject to high-protein;
meat-based diets have a consistently higher rate of cancer
development. As for humans, T Colin Campbell, a Professor of
Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University and the senior
science advisor to the American Institute for Cancer
Research, says there is “a strong correlation between
dietary protein intake and cancer of the breast, prostate,
pancreas and colon.” The paradox of protein is that it is
not only essential but also potentially health-destroying.
Adequate amounts are vital to keeping cells healthy and on
the job, but unrelenting consumption of excess dietary
protein congests your cells and forces the pH of your
life-sustaining fluids down to cell-stifling,
disease-producing levels.
Cells
overburdened with protein become toxic. Keeping in mind that
our body recycles 70 percent of its proteinaceous waste and
that it only loses about 23 grams of protein a day, let’s
look at foods that are a good source of quality protein the
body can use optimally.
Many
nutritionists now feel that 20 grams of protein a day is
more than enough, and about the potential of consistently
consuming much more than this amount A good way of
determining which foods provide sufficient protein is to
consider recommendations on the percentage of our total
calorie intake that should be made up of protein, and then
determine which foods meet these recommendation.
They rage from
the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition saying we need
two and a half percent, the World Health Organization saying
we need four and a half percent and the National Research
Council recommending 8 percent. The 6 and 8 percent figures
are more than what most people need, and these higher
percentages are intended as a margin of safety. But still,
these recommendations are met by many fruits and greatly
exceeded by the most all vegetables. For example, the
percentage of calories provided by protein in spinach is 49
percent, broccoli 45 percent, cauliflower 40 percent,
lettuce 34 percent, peas 30 percent, green beans 26 percent,
cucumber 24 percent, celery 21 percent, potatoes 11 percent,
sweet potatoes 6 percent etc. Space is up for this edition,
we will continue on this interesting yet contentious topic
in two weeks. Yours for Quality Health the Fun Way!

Reflexology
is the massage of the feet. The feet are divided into zones
that represent the whole body. The massage of the nerve
endings situated at the bottom of the feet triggers off a
response in the body. Thorough stimulation of all reflex
areas of the feet reduces stress and tension and creates a
space in the recipient’s body for healing to take place. The
feet are a microcosm; a micro system is one part of the body
that contains a reflection of the whole body. In reflexology
the body parts are reflected in miniature detail on the
feet, with the front of the body on the soles and the back
of the body on the top of the feet. How the feet are divided
up into zones:
• The toes
reflect the head
• The balls of
the foot reflect the ribcage
• The fleshy
instep reflects the soft abdomen
• The firm heel
reflects the pelvic bone
• The anklebone
reflects the hipbone
• The bony ridge
on the inside of the foot reflects the spine
What to expect
from a reflexology session
Everyone can
benefit from a reflexology session including children,
teenagers and adults. The purpose of reflexology is to treat
the whole person, therefore a reflexologist usually starts
the session off by working on the entire foot, before zoning
in on an area that needs extra help. Reflexology gets the
circulation going again and increases the nerve supply to
all organs, creating a balancing effect that restores the
body’s equilibrium.

There are just
not enough hours in the day and you feel as if you are being
pulled in five different directions. Where will you find
more time? How can you possibly deal with everything that’s
coming your way?
There are many
things you can do.
Plan ahead.
Try to avoid
making three separate trips to the chemist, the video shop
and the supermarket. If you know you have to organize
someone to pick up your child on Thursday from soccer
practice, don’t wait until Wednesday night to do something
about it.
Stay out of
office politics.
Your life is full
and busy and you simply don’t have time to get worked up
about what the secretary does in her two-hour lunch breaks
or whether Ms A or Ms B should get the promotion.
Make to-do
lists.
It is much easier
to work your way through a list, than to try and remember
frantically what the last two things were you had to do
while you are stuck in the traffic or working to a deadline
at the office.
Buy household
necessities in bulk.
This will avoid
desperate trips to the 24-hour-shop (read expensive) at
midnight to buy toilet paper, baby food, cat food, bread,
milk or headache tablets.
Pay bills when
shopping.
Kill two birds
with one stone. Or, pay them using internet banking services
if you can. Pay these in advance.
Write down
important telephone numbers.
Storing them in your cell phone only, is not a good idea. If it gets
stolen, you could be stranded and might never be able to get
hold of your friend in Pofadder, or your good business
contact in Newcastle, again.
Make permanent
arrangements with domestic workers.
This cuts out the
possibilities of confusion and chaos. This way, you know
exactly what to expect and you can plan ahead.
Be pro-active
with regards to health.
Take a good
multivitamin and get flu shots before the winter. Don’t wait
until a condition gets serious before you do something about
it.
Get a tax
consultant.
It will cost you
a couple of hundred, but could save you thousands. It also
cuts out the aggravation of trying to figure out the form
and trying to get it in on time.
Learn to say
‘No’.
If you try and do
too much, you will end up suffering from burnout and you
will be of no use to anyone. Furthermore you will not be
pleasant company. People will not dislike you for saying
‘No’ – they will rather respect you for your honesty.
Plan your
relaxation time.
Unless this fits
in somewhere in your day, you will be unable to continue
functioning in the long run. You will start suffering from
stress, look older and start suffering from all sorts of
stress-related conditions, such as insomnia or skin
problems.
Don’t take on
unnecessary problems.
Most of us should
get an honorary PHD in ‘Lying awake about someone else’s
problems’. If you are not causing the problem, there is
little you can do to change it.
Know where
your keys are.
A hook near the
front door for your keys could save you much time. Who
hasn’t spent hours looking for the keys only to find them
firmly nestled into the cushions of the couch? Take time to
buy and install the hook!

Buying a
first flat or house is scary when you have doubts about how
far your income will stretch – and it is too important a
step to allow it to be jeopardized by lack of proper
planning.
Consequently,
says Dr Piet Botha, chairman of the Nationlink estate agency
group, first-time buyers should work out a realistic budget
including the costs of home ownership, and try living within
it before they commit to a purchase.
Financial
advisors reckon a cautious monthly breakdown of expenditure
should include:* 25%-30% on housing;* 8%-15% on food;*
8%-10% on transport;* 5%-7% on health care;* 7%-9% on
insurance/pension;* 6%-8% on clothing;* 5%-9% on
entertainment; and.* 6%-10% for general savings.” This gives
total expenditure, including some savings, of between 70%
and 98% of monthly income, and if you have the discipline to
stay within these broad guidelines you’ll be well on your
way to becoming a home owner,” says Botha. “And if you are
still living at home with your parents you are likely to be
in an even better position – able to save most of the 20 to
30 percent of income allocated to housing in the budget
above and put it towards a deposit on your new home.
“This will lower
your monthly home loan repayments and help take the pressure
off your pay cheque once you do buy.” Botha says it is worth
making sacrifices while you are young for the peace of mind
and financial benefits that will flow from owning your own
home.” And remember that there are nearly always new ways to
save. Rather than use your car every day you may be able to
catch a bus or share a lift with a colleague, for example.
Packed lunches from home are bound to be cheaper than take-aways
and ‘dining-in’ with friends will cost you a lot less than
going to a restaurant.”

You’ve watched
cooking channels on TV where the world-famous chefs pick
herbs with a flourish and stuff them into roast chicken or
sprinkle them onto pastas to add to the taste of almost any
meal. There’s no doubt about it, herbs are the flavor of the
new millennium! But instead of constantly having to buy
fresh herbs or cheating with the bottled variety, the best
and indeed most fashionable way to get your herb fix is to
grow your very own herb garden. Growing your herb garden in
a big pot is a good idea, because then you can bring it
inside in the winter and you can move it around to get the
most sun. Most herbs grow best in full sun, but partial
shade will often do. The rule of the green thumb is for the
herbs to get a minimum of four to seven hours of direct sun
per day. Herbs that prefer full sun include:
• Basil
• Chives
• Dill
• Oregano
• Rosemary
• Tarragon
• Thyme
Herbs that
prefer partial shade include:
• Chervil
• Lemon balm
• Mint Drainage
is very important for growing fresh herbs. Make sure the
container has at least one hole in the bottom.
Soil solutions
Herbs will not
grow in wet clay soil so use good-quality potting soil that
will also ensure adequate drainage. Herbs grow best in
slightly alkaline soil.
Be weary with
water
Watering is as
important as good drainage, rather water the herbs too
little than too much.
Feeding your
herbs.
The growing
season for herbs stretches from August to April. During this
time you have to fertilize them at least once a month.
During winter, one or two doses in total will be enough.

From mid-April
onwards, the following steps will help you to keep your pool
still sparkling during the winter months.
• Use half the
quantity of Sanitizer that you normally use. Do not stop
using sanitizers altogether.
• Run the filter
half as long as it runs in summer.
• Brush the pool
and clear the leaf trap on a regular basis. There is more
debris about in winter than there is in summer.
• An excellent
preventative measure is to add 1 bottle of Two Ten Blue in
April, one in June and one at the end of July.
• Some pool
owners choose to cover their pools with plastic covers that
are readily available. This reduces the environmental impact
on the water. A smaller dose of sanitizer should still be
applied to ensure that algae does not take hold on the
warmer winter days and that the water is bacteria-free.
Note: Do not empty a swimming pool as this could cause
cracks in the walls and the floor of the pool.

As much as the
National Ports Authority go out of their way to put on a
fun-filled Port Festival aimed at the whole family, there
was no love lost as the Formula 1 pilots went to war for the
7th round of their national championship series on the 27 &
28 March on the notoriously rough waters of the East London
Port. With only two championship rounds left after East
London, both of which will take place inland at Klerksdorp
and at Bethlehem, all of the pilots was acutely aware of the
significance this race carried as the season draws to a
close and the title race moves into the home straight. “This
will be the 13th year that the F1 mean machines
have shown their stuff at the festival, and this year was
the scene for as much adrenaline filled action as has ever
been witnessed in East London before with it been lucky 13
for some and unlucky for others” said the F1 series promoter
Jan Johnson.
A number of
pilots have come to the fore as the season has progressed
and non-more than the unflappable pint-sized Tim
Featherstonehaugh (#2 Sentratech), ‘Fethers’ as he is known on
the race circuit, hails from Port Alfred and will be going
all-out as the local favourite to impress not only the
spectators but also his new sponsor Sentratech with his
aggressive racing style. The National Ports Authority East
London’s Port Festival is all about the community becoming
involved. There was plenty of excitement with junior and
senior inflatable racing and development powerboat racing
taking place. There was action packed amateur boxing for
those who have not seen enough aggression on the water and
for the more docile a music sound stage featuring local
talent had the ground rocking all weekend.
F1 Power
Boating has never been as exciting or unpredictable as it is
now. The focus will be on the water because with so many
contenders and so many unpredictable factors and with the
next two races at inland venues, The Kwikfit Klerksdorp
Water Festival on the 24 and 25 April and the final race in
Bethlehem on 22 and 23 May, it truly would take a very brave
man to try and predict who will be this years F1
Powerboating King. Issued on behalf of Powerboat South
Africa by Racing Communications. For further information

Bahrain
International Circuit, Sakhir, Bahrain.
Bernie
Ecclestone’s threat to take Formula One out of Europe as a
result of restrictions on advertising and safety gains
greater substance this season with the addition of two new
races to the calendar. The first is the Bahrain Grand Prix,
to be run at an all-new Hermann Tilke designed complex built
at Sakhir in the south of the kingdom. The multipurpose
facility includes six circuit configurations, the longest of
which is the 5,475-km grand prix track. Lap times with the
current F1 machinery are estimated at around 1 min 33 sec
(210 km/h), and experts predict that the 12 turns (5
left-handed and 7 right-handers) will provide several
overtaking spots, one of which should be at turn one, at the
end of the 1.09 km start-finish straight.
But no-one can
say for sure until 20 F1 cars are unleashed on the 17-metre
wide surface. Several governments, including those of Great
Britain and Australia, have warned their nationals against
competing on security grounds. But Formula One community is
apolitical and insists there is nothing to fear. Race
distance: 57 laps, 308 km Qualifying: 3 April 09:00 - 11:15.
Race starts: 4 April, 13:30 - 15:30.
