Freedom bash:
Proudly SA
Johannesburg - Only South African artists will be performing at the Freedom Day
celebrations on April 27 in Pretoria, the organizers
announced. “Our briefing from the presidency was to include
musicians from all genres and race groups,” said Joe Chakela,
project director of the Creative Collective, which is
organizing the
event.
Some of the big
names are PJ Powers, Karen Zoid, Jabu Khanyile, Zwai Bala,
Speedy, and Arthur Mofokate. Chakela said the free concert
will take place on the Union Buildings lawns in the
afternoon, after the inauguration of the new president that
morning. There will also be an evening event at the State
Theatre in Pretoria, said Chakela, where the president will
be hosting heads of state and VIPs. Judith Sepuma, Xolisa
Dlamini, Corlea Botha, and Abdullah Ebrahim would be
performing at this invitation only affair.
The Musicians
Union of South Africa (Musa), had felt marginalized over the
celebrations, Musa spokesperson Basil Dube told the press
briefing in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. Musa issued a set of
demands to the presidency in February, asking that there be
transparency in the selection of artists, and equal
treatment of artists from different genres, and different
provinces in the country. After extensive meetings the
matter had been resolved satisfactorily, said Dube, and the
government had agreed to a more transparent tender process
in future, to support the capacity building of the union,
and to recognize the union. Dube said Musa had been in
existence since 1994. It had about 700 members and “our
membership is rising”. He said the union had a very
important role to play in ensuring good working conditions
for musicians in South Africa.

What is
aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy
simply means “a therapy using aromas”. It is an ancient
natural and holistic therapy using especially selected
aromatic oils for their therapeutic effect on the mind, body
and soul. The aromas come from the plant kingdom – from
flowers, trees, bushes, and herbs.
Aromatherapy
“arrived” in South Africa in the early 1980s. It is one of
the most popular and fastest growing complementary therapies
in the world.
Who can
benefit from Aromatherapy?
Almost everyone! Many of us, with our over-committed
lifestyles, are just too busy to be sick and find it wise to
manage our stress levels by having regular aromatherapy
sessions. Pure essential oils work holistically and can help
us cope with nervous tension and mood swings, indigestion
and constipation, PMT and Menopause, Rheumatism and muscular
aches and pains. In fact, the uses for Aromatherapy are
endless.
All essential
oils are antiseptic and each has multiple therapeutic
properties; some regulate metabolic functions like digestion
and menstruation, some stimulate our circulation and mental
processes, while others will soothe irritations and
anxieties.
Carrier oils are
non-volatile substances, which are extracted from the seeds
of fruits and nuts, e.g. Grapeseed Oil, Sweet Almond Oil.
Carrier oil is used to facilitate the absorption of the
volatile essential oils via the skin into the body and its
systems.
The
therapeutic properties of six popular pure essential oils
-
Lavender (Lavandula Angustifolia) – regarded as the most versatile essence
therapeutically; its properties are calming, soothing
and above all balancing; effective on a wide variety of
conditions. Note: avoid during first three months of
pregnancy.
-
Grapefruit (Citrus x paradisi) – very effective in stimulating the lymphatic
system; uplifting, helps to counteract nervous tension
and stress related conditions.
-
Orange blossom/Neroli
(Citrus aruantium var.amura) – very effective with
problems of emotional origin; improves stretch marks and
scars.
-
Mandarin (Cirtus reticulata) – strengthens digestive function and liver;
effective for restlessness/insomnia; excellent for
children and pregnant woman.
-
Sweet marjoram (Origanum Marjorana) – powerful muscle relaxant, allows mind and
body to relax simultaneously; soothing, warming on
digestive, muscular, nervous and respiratory system.
Note: avoid during pregnancy.
-
Tea tree
(Melaleuca Alternifolia) - long history of use by the aboriginal
people of Australia; strengthens immune system;
excellent for respiratory system; powerful for acne,
athlete’s foot, warts, thrush and cystitis.
The
aromatherapy treatment
Your first
aromatherapy treatment
Your aromatherapist will ask you detailed questions about
your health, lifestyle and emotional state to discover where
you might have problems, e.g. back, cellulite, anxiety. If
you are already being treated for a medical condition,
please check with your doctor before having aromatherapy.
However, you
might just simply wish to enjoy a unique treatment to smooth
away the stresses of everyday life in the warm, tranquil
privacy of your aromatherapist’s room. In this way, you are
embarking on a preventative healthcare routine, as health is
a profound sense of wellbeing and not just the absence of
disease.

hello
Before you can
develop an effective skin care routine, you need to know
what type of skin you have. Many people have what’s called a
combination skin, meaning that it’s oily in places and dry
in others.
This is easy, but
it’s important - using the incorrect product on your skin
may aggravate problems. Poor cleansing of combination skin
may make it seem oilier than it really is. Using astringent
preparations on normal skin may make it dry.
Here’s what to
do: wash your face, then wait for an hour, without applying
any skin care product to it. Then press a tissue to each of
the following areas of your face: your nose, cheeks, chin
and forehead.
If no oily
residue is left on the skin, you have normal skin.
If all the areas
reveal an oily residue, then you have oily skin.
If skin particles
remain on the tissue or can be seen on the your skin, you
have dry skin. Remember that if your dry skin’s condition
doesn’t improve after being moisturized, you may have
dermatitis. If so, you should see your dermatologist.
If some areas of
your skin – say, your T-zone, or forehead, nose and chin -
yield an oily, you have combination skin. Combination skin
is very common.
Caring for
combination skin
Who said life
was simple? Your skin is oily in places, dry in others.
Wearing a paper bag on your head isn't option. Here's what
to do.
Wash your face at
least once a day with a gentle cleanser;
Use a light
moisturizer on the dry areas of your face – those not in the
more oily T-zone area, which includes your chin, nose and
forehead;
Use a gentle,
alcohol-free toner to remove excess oil at least once a
week;
Use cosmetics
that are oil-free, non-comedogenic (a long word that means
it won’t cause blackheads);
Apply a non-comedogenic,
oil-free sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15 when you’re
exposed to the sun.
Caring for
normal skin
Wash your face
twice a day with a gentle cleanser or a low-alkaline soap;
Use a light
moisturizer;
Protect your skin
by applying sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15;
Avoid products
that are very oily or drying
Caring for dry
skin
Use soaps or
cream bars that contain fatty ingredients such as cocoa
butter or lanolin no more than once or twice a day. Avoid
highly alkaline products – they can irritate your skin;
Apply moisturizer
to your skin every day. If your skin is very dry, apply a
heavy cream at bedtime as well.
Use a sunscreen
with a minimum SPF of 15 to retain moisture.
If you have a
sensitive skin, avoid scented products or those that contain
dyes.
Caring for
oily skin
Washing our
face leaves a ring around the basin. Going out into the sun
causes the price of petrol to drop. Here's what to do.
Wash your face
gently with a mild cleanser, no more than twice a day. Avoid
scrubbing it too hard, as this can irritate the skin;
Avoid creamy
moisturizers and sunscreens. Opt for “non-comedogenic” or
“non-acnegenic” products instead. So-called non-comedogenic
products are less likely to clog your pores;
Use an
alcohol-free toner to remove excess oil at least once a
week;
If your oily skin
has resulted in acne, see a dermatologist for a personalized
treatment regimen;
Use an oil-free
sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15 when exposed to the sun.
How to keep
looking young
If you're in your
20s or 30s and value your youthful appearance, now's the
time to begin a good skin care programme.
-
Here are some tips: Get
enough sleep.
-
Eat healthy.
-
Limit your caffeine
consumption.
-
Use sunscreen every day.
-
Wear sunglasses to avoid
squinting.
-
Don't go to tanning
salons.
-
Establish a nighttime
skin care ritual.
-
Use the right skin care
products.
-
Don't smoke.
-
Consider anti-wrinkle
creams.
Yourhealth &
Beauty will be bring you a complete guide to care for all
skin types during the next few weeks.

hello
Greetings again
to all our health ‘fundies’ out there, we continue with our
touchy topic of protein again this time, so let’s get right
to it.
One day we hear
that a high fat diet causes cancer, the next we read a
report that those on low fat diets don’t have lower cancer
rates. The public is so confused and fed up that it just
eats anything and the number of overweight and sick people
continues to grow.
Fortunately we
have fresh, new evidence from “the most comprehensive large
study ever undertaken of the relationship between diet and
the risk of developing disease.” The China Cornell Oxford
Studies commonly called the China Project has revealed
numerous so-called nutritional facts as demonstrably false.
China was an
ideal ‘laboratory’ for this comprehensive project because
the people in one area eat a certain diet and just a few
hundred kilometers away others may eat a totally different
diet, unlike in the West where we eat very similarly. The
China Project was valid because it studied populations with
a full range of dietary possibilities: from a completely
plant-food diet to diets significantly high in animal foods.
Adding small quantities of variable is how scientists can
best detect the risk or value of a dietary practice.
Chinese people
live their entire lives in the towns they were born in and
rarely migrate, so the dietary effects that researchers
looked at were present for the subject’s entire lives.
As a result of
significant regional differences in the way people eat,
there were dramatic differences in the prevalence of disease
from region to region. Cardiovascular disease rates varied
twenty-fold from one place to another, and certain cancer
rates varied by several hundredfold. In South Africa where
we eat so similarly we do not see a hundredfold difference
in cancer rates between different towns.
Fascinating data
showed massive differences in rates of disease based on the
amount of plant foods consumed and the availability of
animal products. Researchers discovered that as the amount
of animal foods increased in the diet, so did the emergence
of cancers that are common in the West. Most cancers
occurred in direct proportion to the quantity of animal
foods consumed.
Phrased
differently, as animal food consumption approached zero,
cancer rates fell.
Areas in China
with an extremely low consumption of animal food were
virtually free of heart attacks and cancer. Mortality rate
data from 65 counties and 130 villages showed a significant
association with animal protein intake (even at relatively
low levels) and heart attacks but there was a strong
protective effect from green vegetables.
Unfortunately for
us the research done in 1914 on rats in order to determine
human protein needs have left us in a jam (as discussed in
our previous article). Those of us striving for better
health and longevity have to contend with our tongues
rebelling and our minds boggling at the idea of such a
drastic change in eating habits and lifestyle. Many of us
cringe at the thought of a salad, a vegetable bake, or
eating fruit regularly, but, truth is truth and we have only
ourselves to blame if we know better. Gradual, steady change
to a balanced lifestyle is the key. In order to further
research this topic yourself read books like “Eat to Live”
by Dr Joel Fuhrman, “Vibrant Health” by Dr Norman Walker
(who wrote his last book at 115 years and passed away at the
ripe old age of 119), or visit web sites like
www.rawfood.com, and
www.hacres.com. Local
authors who confer with these same thoughts include Mary-Ann
Shearer with her “Natural Way” books, food-combining charts
etc. and Prof. Celine Bernstine’s “Health Seekers” book.
We hope these
thoughts will get you thinking in the right direction and
mean a happier, healthier you. Next time we aim to make
these ideas more practical so you can apply them in your own
day-to-day living.
Yours for
Quality Health the Fun Way!

The sweet violet
is an evergreen perennial woodland plant growing about 10cm
tall and forming a carpet of growth that makes a good
weed-excluding ground cover. The edible leaves can be
harvested all year round, and the edible flowers are
produced in late winter and early spring.
This is a very
easily grown plant, although by nature it grows mainly in
the dappled shade of a woodland, it is very tolerant and
will even succeed in very hot, sunny positions so long as
the soil does not dry out. It succeeds in most soils but
prefers a cool moist well-drained humus-rich soil in partial
or dappled shade and protection from scorching winds. When
grown in the open it prefers a moderately heavy rich soil.
The leaves are
quite small, perhaps 3 - 5cm in diameter, but are produced
in abundance and are easy to harvest. They have a very mild,
almost bland flavor and can be used in quantities in salads.
The texture is slightly tough, however, so we usually mix
them in well with other leaves. The leaves can also be
cooked, and are a nice addition to soups or stews where they
will help to thicken them in much the same way as okra can
be used.
My favorite part
is the flowers. These are usually produced in abundance in
late winter, early spring. They have a strong scent and
taste of parma violet and make a superb and decorative
addition to salads Seed is best sown in the autumn in a cold
frame. The seed requires a period of cold stratification and
the germination of stored seed can be erratic. Prick out the
seedlings into individual pots when they are large enough to
handle and plant them out in the summer.

In our everyday
lives an infinite number of colours surround us, which we
take pretty much for granted, although it has a wide range
of roles in our daily lives: it influences our tastes in
food and numerous other purchases, even the colour of a
person’s face can also tell us about that person’s health.
Although colour affects us so much, our knowledge of colour
and its use is mostly insufficient, resulting in numerous
problems in deciding on the use of a colour, whether it is
for decorative use or marketing transactions.
We all know that
colour is light and light changes colour. We also know that
there is no colour around us, colour is registered in our
brain and we experience it only there!
If we pass light
from the sun through a prism, we create a colour
distribution like a rainbow. Human beings can perceive these
specific wavelengths as colours namely: Red, Orange, Yellow,
Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet. The reason that the human
eye can see the spectrum is because those specific
wavelengths stimulate the retina in the human eye.
The eye is not
only our most important sense, but also our most complicated
sense. Like the fact that no two people in the world can
have the same fingerprints, neither can two people have the
same colour experience when looking at an object.

-
Colour have UNLIMITED
shades to choose from
For the innocent,
colour is a quality fixed to the surface of physical
objects. Perceiving the true nature of colour consists
simply in opening one’s eye and letting the light stream in.
The professional colorist will distinguish physical colour
from perceived colour. Physical colour is a “characteristic
of a visible radiation…” where as perceived colour is an
“aspect of visual perception...” Physical colour, the
stimulus for perceived colour, is objectively quantifiable
and measurable, but the qualities features- redness,
greenness, yellowness, blueness- reside with perceived
colour. Colour is a science, and to understand the working
of it, it is necessary to explain some basic colour terms:
INHERENT COLOUR: A colour sample looked at in isolation of
other colours is referred to as the Inherent Colour. This is
the colour the customer look at on a colour card. The moment
this Inherent Colour come into contact with other colours ,
or is painted on a wall, we refer to it as the Perceived
Colour. In other words the inherent colour now comes into
contact with other colours in the surroundings and the
colour is now influenced by the other colours. We use the
term “Colour is light, and light changes colour.” Articles

One of the
biggest attractions of an investment in property is the fact
that it is relatively easy to gear the purchase – that is,
to use someone else's money to cover most of the purchase
cost.
Lenders are happy because their loans are secured by bricks
and mortar assets and, for the borrower, there is always the
chance of a quick gain from rising property prices.
Consequently, says David Rogers, MD of SA’s biggest real
estate group Homenet, borrowers are often tempted to go for
the highest possible gearing ratio, with a low deposit and a
high proportion of the property cost borrowed.
"But borrowers need to consider that a bigger deposit
generally means a better chance of a home loan at the most
favorable interest rate, and that the loan can be paid off
or at least reduced more quickly - which means that the
property owner will have a bigger capital gain when the time
comes to sell."
Before they go house hunting, potential buyers also need to
determine what size loan they themselves feel comfortable
about repaying.
"Financial institutions will determine the maximum they are
prepared to lend based on the borrower’s credit record and
current income and debt commitments, and with interest rates
currently so low, borrowers may well find that they qualify
for bigger loans than they anticipated.
"This does not necessarily mean, however, that they should
immediately opt for a more expensive property or a higher
gearing ratio. Determining what size loan is right for you
remains a personal decision and should take into account
your overall investment strategy as well as the property in
question."
The buyer of a newly-built property, for example, may need
less cash to cover transfer costs or improvements and be
able to put down a bigger deposit, while the buyer of an
older home may decide to take a bigger loan and keep some
cash in hand to cover the costs of repairs and renovation.
"In general, though," says Rogers, " it is good advice to
put down the biggest possible deposit and keep the amount
borrowed to the lowest level.
"And the final decision should only be made after careful
consideration of the probable future trend of interest rates
and after shopping around to ensure the best possible
current rate on the loan."
How To Keep
Maintenance Costs Down
A stitch in time
saves nine, the saying goes, and it applies to home
maintenance chores just as much as to mending or darning.
By keeping up with maintenance from the start, says Berry
Everitt, MD of the Chas Everitt International property
group, homeowners will be able to spot and remedy any
problems before they become major repairs requiring
budget-breaking expenditure.
“Besides, it’s no secret that well-kept homes sell quickest,
whatever the state of the residential property market, and
sticking to a preventative maintenance plan will ensure that
the property is always ready for sale should an unexpected
opportunity for an upgrade appear or a job change make a
sudden relocation essential.”
Everitt suggests the following tips to ensure “minimum-pain”
maintenance:
-
Alternate major jobs
such as re-painting so that the interior is done one
year, the exterior is painted the following year, and
windows, doors and frames are painted as a separate
project.
-
Check the roof for leaks regularly. A leak quickly
fixed will save re-painting walls and repairing
ceilings.
-
Check plumbing and
irrigation systems for blockages and leaks. Small faults
can often be repaired by the homeowner but a major
overhaul will probably need an expensive expert.
-
Remove rubble and
garden refuse regularly in small loads, and avoid having
to call in a waste removal service to take away a
mountain of junk.
-
Clean fitted carpets
regularly to ensure they always look their best.
-
Clean the pool daily to
save an expensive draining, re-surfacing and re-filling.
-
And, finally, says
Everitt, it's a good idea to keep a maintenance log from
the time you move into your home. “This will ensure that
no essential tasks are missed, and reassure potential
buyers, when the time comes to sell, that the property
has been well maintained.”

It’s finally
happened. Audi has launched a car that can recognize your
fingerprints! What’s more the latest Audi A8, just released
in SA, is more powerful, more comfortable and handles even
better. For some time now I’ve been jokingly telling people
that various cars could recognize my fingerprints, which is
why
I didn’t need to
unlock the door when getting in. Of course I was bluffing -
the “Keyless Go” available as an option on some Merc models
uses a radio transponder key that is recognised by the car’s
security system when you’re within a few meters of the car.
However, I’ve now got to eat my words, for the latest Audi
A8 DOES have fingerprint recognition software - although
it’s not used for access to the car. Instead the A8
recognizes your fingerprints so it can use your personal
settings each time the car is started, making sure you’re
tuned to your favorite radio station, with the volume YOU
like and the seat, mirror and steering wheels settings the
way YOU like them. And the A8 still has its own version of
“Keyless Go” - Audi calls it “Advanced Key” - which means
you never have to take the key out of your pocket when
getting into and starting the car, although you DO have to
use the key’s buttons to remotely lock it. In South Africa,
however, the A8 has always been a slow seller, mainly
because of restricted imports and some fears about
reparability of its aluminium bodywork. However Audi SA says
this is about to change, and sales in South Africa are
expected to follow the European trend. “By combining class
leading technology with the advantages of a high-tech
aluminium construction and Quattro permanent four-wheel
drive, the Audi A8 embodies Audi’s ideal of Vorsprung,
setting an example for others to follow”.

Sadly, this year
could be the swansong of the Imola circuit (near Bologna,
Italy) as Slec, the company that organizes the Formula One
World Championship, continues the process of taking the
series to more countries outside Europe to sidestep
restrictive EC rules.
Situated in a
park within walking distance of Imola station, the modern
circuit was initially named after Enzo Ferrari’s son Dino,
but became the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari after the death
of the Commendatore in 1988. Its dramatic Tamburello fl
at-out left-hand sweep was replaced by a chicane and new
coner after the tragic craches resulting in the deaths of
Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger in 1994. While this was
made the circuit much safer, it has stopped the dramatic
wheel-towheel battles for position under braking into the
uphill hairpin at Tosa. The fast sweeps followed by tight
bends place a premium on engine power and braking effi
ciency.
Race distance:
62 laps, 305,609 km
Start:
14:00 South African time, 25 April
2003 Winner:
Michael Schumacher (Ferrari) 1 hr 28 min 12,058 sec (196,619
km/h)
2003 Pole:
