SANBS (South African National Blood Services)

There are located in a safe area and with loads of parking space you will have no excuse not to visit their new offices. They are open from Monday to Friday: 08:30 till 15:30, Wednesdays: 10:00 till 19:00 and on Saturdays : 08:30 till 11:30. For any questions or queries feel free to contact them on (018) 464 4076 or visit their office at shop no. 7, Flamwood Walk. (Next to Mike’s Kitchen)

WHY SHOULD PEOPLE DONATE SAFE BLOOD?

Safe blood saves lives. Every day, thousands of people would die if others did not donate their blood. Blood is composed of several different elements, each of which fulfils particular function. These can be used for specific purposes so that each unit of blood can be used for more than one patient. In South Africa, one donation may be used to save up to four lives.

Transfusions are given to.

• Patients undergoing surgical operations.

• Patients with cancer or leukaemia.

• Children with severe anaemia.

• Women: to treat blood loss during childbirth

.

WHY DOES SAFE BLOOD START WITH ME?

Blood is the most precious gift that anyone can give to another person. It is The Gift of Life. A decision to donate your blood can save the life of one or even several people. Patients who need blood have the right to receive blood that is as safe as possible and that will cause them no harm. If you think that your blood may be unsafe, another person’s life may depend on your decision not to donate blood.

Remember, you or a member of your family may need the gift of blood one day. You would expect to receive safe blood- others have an equal right to know that the blood they are given is safe.

“To give blood is a privilege- to receive SAFE BLOOD is a right.”

hello

Practical pointers on lifestyle change

Friendly greetings to all our readers. This time, as promised in our last article, we want to offer some practical pointers for those making a lifestyle change as far as their eating habits go. Having brought you interesting facts about dietary protein in our last two columns we thought it best to make what we were saying apply to every day living.

Most people prefer to make dietary/lifestyle changes gradually unless they have an ailment that requires a more radical approach. That said, many of us seem to make a few minor changes to appease our consciences and never experience the full benefits of going all the way. Whether we are willing to admit it or not most of us don’t like change, especially when it comes to our food. We’ve grown up in our culture with a set way of eating. Meal times play a major role in how we socialize and how we are accepted socially. We can ask anyone who is forced to eat differently to those around them how uncomfortable and estranged it makes them feel, when it’s quite obvious from what’s on their plate, that they may not eat certain foods.

Fortunately many more people are realizing the benefits of healthy eating and whole families are converting to becoming vegetarian cutting out processed, refined foods and they’re reaping the benefits from having better immune systems, better mental ability and they’re out-performing the competition in sport as well, just to mention a few of the short term benefits. It takes courage to make a change and many don’t know where to start so lets discuss how to make the change, where to get information and we will give some examples of what one can eat.

How to make a change in eating habits usually begins with asking ourselves- why? If we’re not motivated to make a change because we’ve decided we want to have healthy bodies, clear-thinking minds and experience vibrant health then there will be no motivation to do something new and different. We also need support either from a spouse or a friend who will make the change with us. There’s something deeply rewarding in a couple deciding together, and making the change together- come on all you guys out there- “Bok kos” is good for you!

So the freezer is full of Gemsbok, mutton, beef and chicken and you’ve just read Dr Joel Fuhrman’s book: “Eat to Live” and you realize that you must make a change. This is where the crunch comes, hopefully crisp, crunchy veggies and fruit. Maybe you’re feeling generous and you start giving away your beloved Gemsbok Pootjie or you decide to eat what you’ve got and just never restock with the damaging foods once they’re used up. The great thing is the choice is yours and you know how disciplined you need to be with yourself in order to achieve permanent change. Do it because you want to and because you understand why.

Where to get info’ on healthy eating habits can be confusing and frustrating because there’s so much conflicting advice and a new fad diet in nearly every magazine, so we recommend the following resources because we are familiar with them, they’re proven, many of them have legitimate up to date scientific research to back them up, and most importantly there are literally thousands of people practicing these eating habits and reaping far more benefits from them than they initially expected. Good websites to visit include: www.hacres.com , www.rawfood.com , www.mary-anns.com . The best books I’ve read to date include “Eat to Live” penned by Dr Joel Fuhrman, “God’s Way to Ultimate Health” by Rev. George Malkmus, “Vibrant Health” by Dr Norman Walker and “The Natural Way” by Mary-Ann Shearer. There’s lots of great information available so take it slow and digest what you take in or one can feel a little overwhelmed.

What to eat at social gatherings is often a problem. Here are a few tips. Where possible plan ahead and inform your host or organizer of the event of your needs. There’s no reason to feel out because you eat differently, just be specific about what you do and don’t eat so the person doing the catering can whisk up something you’ll enjoy. Family gatherings can be more difficult (unfortunately those closest to us, like family can be the least accommodating and want to haul us over the coals because of our decision to eat differently) so offer to bring food with that you can enjoy. Our experience is that our platter of vegetarian delights usually get consumed by everyone else because of the appealing colours, textures and flavours, so take extra or you’ll lose out.

Our allotted space is up, hope you found this article helpful. Yours for “Quality Health the Fun Way!”

Shop over the Net safely

Online shopping gives you access to a lot more market and products, and it can be done with minimal risk. Shopping online offers a lot of benefits that you won’t find shopping in a store or by mail.

For example, the Internet is always open and bargains can be numerous online. Shopping on the Internet is also no less safe than shopping in a store or by mail, provided you keep the following in mind:

Use a secure browser.

This is the software you use to navigate the Internet. Your browser should comply with industry security standards, such as Secure Sockets Layers (SSL). These standards scramble the purchase information you send over the Internet, helping to secure your transaction. Always look for the secure lock (<<…OLE_ Obj…>>) and related certificated when providing or receiving information from a site.

Maintain good computer security habits.

Always close your browser before leaving your computer, especially if you share a computer with another person, and never leave your computer unattended while conducting transactions online. Shop with companies you know. Anyone can set up a shop online under almost any name. If you’re not familiar with a merchant, ask for a paper catalogue or brochure to get a better idea of their merchandise and services

Keep your password(s) private.

Be creative when you establish a password, and never give it to anyone. Avoid using a telephone number, birth date, ore the name of your pet. Instead , use a combination of numbers, letters and symbols.

Pay by credit card.

If you pay by credit card online, your transaction will be protected by the Credit Card Association Rules.

Keep a record

Be sure to print a copy of your purchase order and confirmation number for your record. Keep your personal information private Don’t disclose any personal information such as your address, telephone number, identity number or your e-mail address unless you know who’s collecting your personal information and why they are collecting the information and how they’ll use it.

hello

The ultimate at-home facial

 h

 1. CLEANSE

It’s the number one skin priority. Use your facial wash or cream cleanser and go over damp skin with your fingertips in small, circular motions. Don’t forget your neck, under your chin, sides of the nose and your eyebrows, rinse, repeat.

2. POLISH

Exfoliating improves skin circulation, unclogs pores and boosts cell renewal. Using your fingertips massage facial scrub in small, light, circular motions, up and outwards. Use your palms for the neck area. Rinse your face thoroughly.

3. MASK

Masks are excellent pick-me-ups for all skin types. Work into the skin using balls of your fingers avoiding the eye area. Leave for 10 to 15 minutes and then remove using damp cotton wool, sweeping upwards.

4. TONE

Toners work by increasing circulation to speed up the delivery of nutrients and the removal of toxins. Sprinkle some toner onto cotton wool and wipe it over the neck and face area in upwards circular movements.

5. MOISTURISE

Application is key here – give yourself a facial massage at the same time to stimulate circulation. Place a five-cent-sized amount on your fingertips and apply in light upwards strokes taking special care around the eyes

Revive Tired Eyes

Stimulate nerve endings by applying gentle pressure for five minutes. Use pads of your ring fingers to massage the eye area, starting near the nose

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

If I am not giving my all to myself, I am not giving my all, at all. If you were to poll 50 average people on a street corner in almost any city, asking them what they wanted to do in their lives, chances are the predominant answer would be, “to help people.

” When you consider how rude, abusive, violent and unloving we humans have demonstrated that we can be, this answer might surprise you. The natural instinct amongst most human beings is to reach out in support of one another. It is a wonderful concept; however, there is one small problem many of us have yet to overcome. While we want to help other people, most of us cannot help ourselves! There are people out there who want to help save the world who have yet to master a sinful of dirty dishes.

Others want to save children and feed the poor, yet they cannot seem to conquer the dust bunnies beneath their beds and in the bottoms of their closets. Yes, some of us want to fix all that is wrong in the world, but we cannot seem to fix our broken hearts and our shattered minds.

We don’t recognize that we cannot give what we do not have. Until we clean up the small places in our own lives, we will experience extreme difficulty doing what the world so desperately needs done. Anger is a little thing. Hate is a little thing.

Order is a little thing. Each of these little things has a major impact on the big picture. Right thinking, right action and right response to the little things will help us to conquer the big things, like injustice, poverty, and disorder. Until we are each able to conquer and master the little things in our own hearts, minds and lives, the big things will remain undone.

Until now, you may realize that you have been attempting to do something’s in the world that you have not yet done in your own life. Just for now take care of the little things in your heart, your mind and your life that have a major impact on your ability to help and give to the world.

MAKE AN INSTANT TOPIARY

Decorate your doorstep with a classical lollipop ‘bush’

1 You’ll need to make a lollipop frame using galvanized wire which you can purchase from your local nursery. Place the frame upright in a large pot of your choice.

2 Choose small leaved ivies from the ‘climbers’ section of your garden centre. Plant the ivies in the centre of the pot, using potting soil.

3 Tie the shoots of the ivies onto your wire support till you’ve covered your frame. Trim off any straying stems to maintain a neat lollipop bush

Vaal Reefs behaal oortuigende oorwinning

Catalunya, Barcelona, Spain

With its smooth surface and changing-radius corners, the circuit de Catalunya was specially designed for the modern era grand prix car. The venue has hosted the Spanish round of the series since 1991. It has a number of possible over taking points, notably the right-hand sweep at the end of the long start-finish straight. However, it is very “technical”, and car set-up is very critical in achieving competitive lap times, with wind direction having a marked effect on performance, so many races in recent years have been processional. A change to the La Caixa corner, leading into the final complex, could provide a realistic overtaking spot this year. The bend, previously almost horseshoe-shaped now features a sharp hairpin, with a 100 meter straight connecting it to the next curve, Banc Sabadell. The new corner will be used for F1, while the original will be retained for other categories. The area between the two stretches has been asphalted.

Race Distance: 65 Laps, 307,327 km.

Start: 14:00 South African Time.
