Science and Technology is not a monster

The Matlosana Summer Camp for Young Scientists 2006 was recently held. The aim of the camp was to sustain, contemplate innovative ways, inculcate and stimulate the interest and love for Science, Engineering and Technology amongst the youth in a friendly and fun way. The camp was held over a five day period where the youth was exposed to the world of science, engineering and technology in a fun filled way. Workshops, practical activities and constructions sessions were on offer. The speaker of the City of Matlosana, Rosy Thabanchu said during her keynote address that the youngsters must be more goal orientated and must stop saying that they are previously disadvantage and realize that they are actually advantage. This year is the 30th Anniversary of Youth Day where hundreds died so that we can have the opportunities that the youth have today. Everyone has a talent but if you don't look for it you won't find it, if you don't have a goal you don't have anything to work for.

Thabanchu also said that council and the business sector are working together to create recreational facilities but these facilities are not utilize by the youth.

City Council of Matlosana intends extending amnesty

The City Council of Matlosana intends extending amnesty to all debtors having more than one account with the municipality until 31 October.  It is becoming custom that owners of multiple properties do not pay the basic charges and assessment rates of the properties where they are not staying.

As result, outstanding debt is escalating on a monthly base.  Owners are expected to make arrange-ments on all outstanding accounts and start paying with immediate effect.  Failing which, the following steps would be taken:

-  Legal steps; -  Consolidation of   separate accounts    and crediting any   account of the debtor,   and - covering outstanding property rates from tenants  and/or agents. - Residents are once more invited to liaise with Treasury should they be experiencing problems with their accounts and meter readings.

Consumers soon to feel the pitch of interest rate hikes

Reserve Bank Governor, Tito Mboweni has warned consumers to either adjust their appetite for credit spending or face the possibility of having their goods repossessed as recent interest rate hikes begin to take effect.

Briefing Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Finance recently, Mboweni assured MPs that interest rate hikes were the most effective way of containing the current wave of credit-based consumer spending threatening the country's inflation outlook.  "Next year we will begin to see the impact of recent interest rate adjustments as people will either start cutting down on debt or begin to default on repayments," he said.

"When people start to realizing that money is not so cheap, they will stop borrowing," he said, adding that other measures such as imposing credit limits and trying to convince people to cut down on debts, do not work.  Last month the Reserve bank hiked its repo rate by 50 basis points, which saw the central bank's lending rate to commercial banks climbing to 8 percent.

With loans having grown by a staggering 26 percent, Mr Mboweni said he was concerned banks were not slowing down on their aggressive marketing campaigns.  "It seems the banks and retail shops are not willing to learn any lesson at all. Despite all indications that a majority of people will soon find themselves not able to service their debts, they [commercial banks] still continue to bombard people with loan offers" he said.

He said the banks' attitude was a clear indication that there was something wrong in "our borrowing and lending market".   Overall, Mr Mboweni said the country's economy continued to grow.  "While we are experiencing a very impressive growth in the country's manufacturing sector, the services sector's growth has been even more robust," he said. – BuaNews

IMPRESSIVE PROGRESS AT ITSOSENG HEALTH CENTRE

As part of ongoing Project Monitoring to ensure delivery of Projects on time to client departments and communities, North West Public Works MEC, Howard Yawa has visited the construction site for the R70 million Health Centre in Itsoseng Township near Lichtenburg on Monday.  The purpose of the project site visit was for the MEC to appraise himself of progress in the project implementation.

“I am satisfied with local empowerment as twelve sub contractors are engaged on the Project. The quality of work is impressive and if the current pace is maintained, the project would be delivered within the contract period. As government we count on the continued support of the Itsoseng community to fast track delivery of projects in the area” said an excited Yawa. Fourteen staff houses, an Emergency Medical Services block, a mortuary and a guardhouse are at roof level nearing completion.

The contractor has raised the platform for the foundation of the 24-bed health centre and commenced with brickwork for the administration offices, consultation rooms, wards, maternity rooms, specialised health services and a theatre.  The Project has thus far created over a hundred job opportunities for locals who were previously unemployed.

Over 500,000 jobs created Labour Force Survey

The Labour Force Survey by Statistics South Africa has revealed that more than 500,000 jobs were created in the country between March 2005 and March 2006. This translates to a slight decline in the unemployment rate, from last year's 26.5 percent to 25.6 percent in March this year.   At least 544 000 jobs were created in the period reviewed said Population and Social Statistics Deputy Director-General Kefiloe Masiteng.

“After several years of decline, employment has generally been on a slightly upward trend since March 2003. In the year to March 2006, the number of employed persons rose, thus showing that slightly more than half a million people were employed during that period. There was an expansion in the number of economically active persons. Since the working age population increased less rapidly than the labour over the same period, the labour force participation rate rose,” she said.

The survey was conducted via face-to-face interviews with residents of approximately 30 000 dwelling units. – BuaNews

Patients at Sunningdale Hospital gets spoiled

Hairdressing students of Vuselela FET College (Klerksdorp Campus) visited the Sunningdale Hospital on 19 September.  The purpose of this community project was to wash and blow-dry the hair of the patients.  The idea was to relieve the nursing staff of this chore so that they could attend to health matters.  Some of the bedridden elderly patients could not thank the students enough.

The patients enjoyed being spoilt and a new mommy was very excited with being able to look her best when she showed off her new baby.  The students were eager to help and enjoyed the opportunity to be of service to the patients.

They also learnt that one can experience much joy if the rewards are only genuine appreciation and a warm smile.

More deadly TB carriers sought by Gauteng govt

The Gauteng health department is tracing three of six people who have been confirmed as having the extreme drug resistant strain of TB (XDR-TB).

The department confirmed six new cases of XDR-TB in the Gauteng province on 26 September. This is in addition to the one case identified on the East Rand earlier this month.

Three of the newly identified patients are already receiving medical care at Sizwe Tropical Disease Hospital. The discovery of the six new cases follows heightened surveillance and screening across the country.

Earlier this month, an East Rand hospital detected the first case of extremely drug resistant tuberculosis outside KwaZulu-Natal, where 50 people have died. Six cases have also been found at mines in the Free State.

A get together of Southern Africa Development Community health ministers in Lesotho has called for an urgent meeting of TB experts to develop a regional plan to deal with the outbreak of XDR-TB. - South African Broadcasting Corporation

THE WONDERFUL MAMA (RIES)

Choosing a bra can prove to be a real mission.  It's either really pretty but soooo uncomfortable or comfortable but soooo ugly!  Bras are like shoes, if it doesn't fit right it won't feel right.

Any woman with good fashion sense should have a bra wardrobe, because specific clothing calls for specific underwear, but no matter what size or shape you are, wearing the right size and style of bra should form an intricate part of your total breast and body care program. While throwing out all you ill fitting bras, you may also want to throw out the outdated notion that supportive bras must of necessity look matronly!  A whole range of sexy feminine bras are available form Pandora Bra Studio West Rand.

For large and well developed breast (D, DD, E, F, G and H cups) shoulder straps should be wide or non stretchable.  This is to prevent the straps from cutting into the shoulders.  The back strap should be wide as most of the support is at the back.  (If the back strap doesn't fit perfectly, it will ride up between the shoulder blades).

For the firmer breast a medium control bra will be suitable.  Big breasts aren't always heavy and smaller breasts (B & C cups) aren't always light.  It is about the firmness and perkiness of the Breast.  Another misnoma is that under wired bras will give you more lift.  Not so, if the bra is not a perfect fit the breast will hang over the wire or under the wire.

The purpose of the wire is shaping, so if you have more breast tissue under the arm than in the cleavage area, a wired bra will most probably fit better as it will push the breast toward the cleavage area.  If you have a very full cleavage then a non-wire is for you, because the wired bra will push more breasts towards the cleavage area and you will have “double breast”.  But what ever your shape or size, Pandora Bra Studio can make purchasing a perfect fit bra an easy and pleasant experience.

Prisoners to assist in community projects

Ngconde Balfour, the correctional services minister, says more prisoners will be roped in to assist in community projects as part of their rehabilitation programme.

Balfour said this in Gugulethu, where prisoners are assisting in the construction of a church building as part of the "Correction Week" awareness programme. He also visited a greening project in Khayelitsha where prisoners are involved. The minister says his department is intensifying its rehabilitation programmes, especially for prisoners who are about to complete their prison terms.

The minister says there is no prisoner who will be left idle, "except for those who are in maximum (security prisons) because they are difficult to deal with.”

Daarom is 'n Papsmeer so belangrik.

Vir meer inligting of advise oor kanker, skakel KANSA tolvry by 080 022 6622, besoek www.cansa.org.za of skakel Sr Minné by 082 520 8445.

Suid-Afrikaanse Kunsliedere by Aardklop

Permanent jobs scarce in tourism sector

Moeketsi Mosola, the SA Tourism CEO, says although South Africa is riding the wave of a tourism boom, not enough permanent jobs are being created in the industry. The brand new "Business Unusual" has been unveiled at roadshows in the United States, Europe and Asia.

The concept is part of a concerted effort to turn South Africa into one of the world's top business conference venues by 2010. Mosola says more initiatives are needed for the creation of jobs.

Are we creating jobs for the jobs at the levels that are required? The answer is -

No. We need to actually re-double our efforts in making sure that at least we increase this number by two folds to make sure that we put as many South Africans to work as is possible," says Mosola. - South African Broadcasting Corporation.
