Overland hosted a special day for orphans and disabled
people in the KOSH area on the 19th of May at the Triest
Training Centre in Klerksdorp. “Its time for Overland to
help the less fortunate and brighten up their day by means
of hosting a fun filled day of fun and games. After all,
these people need a day to celebrate the fact that they are
children and adults and that there are companies like
Overland that always keeps them in mind”. Said a
representative of the Overland group of companies on why
they hosted the day.
There were approximately 1000 children and disabled people.
The day kicked off with a warm welcoming of all the guests
and schools. There was a jumping castle, face painting,
funny characters and a dog show presented by the dog unit
from Stilfontein police. Everyone was spoiled with a
T-Shirt, sweets, ice cream, a hot dog roll and
Lots, lots more. Overland succeeded in making the day
special for everyone with special guest Phil Masinga that
gave a motivate speech to all the star struck children.
Local Soccer Star Phil Masinga (photo left) gave a very
positive and motivate speech to the

31 May is World No Tobacco Day and the Cancer Association of
South Africa (CANSA) together with all stakeholders
promoting a Smoke Free Society, has highlighted Tobacco
and Family Health.
Leading a healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce the
risk of cancer. Maintaining good health requires a firm
stance against smoking tobacco products and second hand
smoke. Cigarettes contain over 4500 harmful chemicals and
when a cigarette is lit 85% of the smoke is released into
the atmosphere as side-stream smoke. This second hand smoke
can affect the health of non-smokers who are continuously
exposed to this unhealthy environment.
Children are particular vulnerable as their immune system is
still being developed. Children who breathe second hand
smoke are more likely to get colds, allergies, middle ear
infections and “glue ear” (the most common cause of deafness
in children). Smoking and being exposed to second hand smoke
while pregnant contributes to miscarriages, low birth weight
and stillbirths. There is also evidence that second hand is
connected to the risk of sudden infant death syndrome. Joel
Perry, CANSA’s Health Programmes Director urges everyone to
act responsibly regarding his or her health and take bold
steps to avoid exposure to second hand smoke. Object if the
law is not upheld on non-smoking in public and work place.
Joel appeals to all to make their homes, especially indoors
a smoke free environment in the interest of your family’s
health and well-being.
There are an estimated 1.2 billion regular smokers in the
world today. Many of these smokers do not know that tobacco
causes disease, tobacco related health risk and premature
death.
Recent studies have shown that elderly smokers may increase
their risk contracting dementia. Smoking may cause heart
attacks, strokes, blood vessel disease, emphysema, chronic
bronchitis, peptic ulcers and impotence. Cancer of the
lungs, throat, vocal cords, mouth, tongue, oesophagus,
bladder, pancreas, kidneys, stomach and cervix are also
smoking related.
The World Health Organization states that tobacco and
poverty create a vicious circle. Money spent on tobacco
products reduces money spent on human needs such as food,
shelter, education and healthcare. Join CANSA and the
international community to fight against the expansion of
the tobacco and cigarette industry, and advertising amongst
vulnerable groups in all its subtle forms. For those who
smoke we say NO if’s or butts, quit smoking. It’s the smart
thing to do. Take up the Stop and Win challenge this month,
for more information on this competition please collect an
entry form from your nearest pharmacy or enter on
www.stopandwin.ngo.za Stop Line 011 720 3145.
For more information on smoking or any other cancers or
related conditions contact CANSA’s Toll free Information
Service on 0800 22 66 22 or visit the CANSA website
www.cansa.org.za
On the 31st May 2004 CANSA will have smoking gangs (school
children), who will be collecting funds in tins at shopping
centres. This fundraising event will be for patients with
lung cancer. Please support this event as CANSA and all
their patients need your donations.

It’s that time
of year again when many of us are plaque by the sniffles.
When our immune systems have been compromised it’s good to
know what to do to speed up recovery.
The value of
sleep and rest cannot be overemphasized. Optimal quantities
of sleep are required for the optimal function of NK
Lymphocytes (natural killer cells). Persistently low levels
of NK Lymphocytes are associated with lowered resistance to
infectious diseases such as influenza. Garlic stimulates the
ability of NK Lymphocytes to destroy antigens (like viruses
and bacteria) and cancer cells by up to 160% (scientific
research-humans-double blind study-Kyolic form of garlic
most effective).
Consume plenty
of quality liquids. Drink purified water, fresh fruit juices
and vegetable juices. These help to cleanse the body of the
toxic wastes that form mucous in our sinuses and lungs.
Avoid all
alcohol, cigarettes, tea and coffee.
Research
trials have shown that a large amount of Vitamin C lessens
the frequency and symptoms as well as shortens the duration
of a cold. Those who supplement with Vitamin C experience an
average of 34% fewer days of illness.
Zinc lozenges
are great for soothing a sore throat and can be effective at
reducing the duration of symptoms. A recent study by the
Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics, demonstrated
Echinacea’s efficacy in the treatment of colds and flu when
used as soon as symptoms first appear.
Propolis, a
resinous substance collected by bees, is high in
bioflavanoids that posses antioxidant properties. Propolis
prevents the common cold and alleviates sinusitis. This same
substance has been shown to prevent influenza infection
(scientific research-humans-preventative in 93% of cases.)
Beta-Carotene
helps heal inflamed mucous membranes and strengthens the
immune system. Beta-Carotene is high in raw carrots and
sweet potatoes but is also available in capsules and
tablets.
Combating
stress is very important. This is often easier said than
done. People under stress are much more susceptible to the
common cold. Learn relaxation techniques, exercise
moderately and get help if you don’t know how to cope. Hope
these pointers help you to recover quicker if you find
yourself with the sniffles.
Yours for
“Quality Health The Fun Way!

TROY
In ancient Greece, the passion of two of history’s most
legendary lovers, Paris, Prince of Troy (Orlando Bloom) and
Helen (Diane Kruger), Queen of Sparta, ignites a war that
will devastate a civilization. When Paris steals Helen away
from her husband, King Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson), it is an
insult that cannot be suffered. Familial pride dictates that
an affront to Menelaus is an affront to his brother
Agamemnon (Brian Cox), powerful King of the Myceneans, who
soon unites all the massive tribes of Greece to steal Helen
back from Troy in defence of his brother’s honour. In truth,
Agamemnon’s pursuit of honour is corrupted by his
overwhelming greed — he needs control of Troy to ensure the
supremacy of his already vast empire. The walled city, under
the leadership of King Prium (Peter O’ Toole) and defended
by mighty Prince Hector (Eric Bana), is a citadel that no
army has been able to breach. One man alone stands as the
key to victory or defeat over Troy — Achilles (Brad Pitt),
believed to be the greatest warrior alive. Arrogant,
rebellious and seemingly invincible, Achilles has no
allegiance to anyone or anything, save his own glory. It is
his insatiable hunger for eternal renown that leads him to
attack the gates of Troy under Agamemnon’s banner — but it
will be love that ultimately decides his fate. Two worlds
will go to war for honour and power. Thousands will fall in
pursuit of glory. And for love, a nation will burn to the
ground.

hello
Are you so afraid of doing things wrong that you won’t do
anything at all? How many times have you convinced yourself
that something is right for you to do, only to allow
yourself to be blown off course by someone else who says,
“That’s wrong!” Is it possible that you dwell in a past of
things wrong to such a degree that you now believe that
anything you do will probably go wrong?
If you have answered
yes to one or more of these enquiries, here is another
question for you. “What’s wrong with being
wrong?”
When you take a step in a direction that could
ultimately lead you off course, wrong lets you know that you
need to change direction. If you choose something or someone
that is less than worthy of who you are, wrong lets you know
that you need to make another choice. If you decide to take
on something that you really are not prepared to handle,
wrong lets you know what skills you need to build, what
information you need to acquire, what things you do well and
what things you cannot.
When you get right down to it, wrong
is life’s way of letting you know in order to get the right
results for your efforts. Now what’s wrong with that? If you
have a fear of being wrong, go back into your history. Allow
yourself to remember the first time you were told that you
were wrong. Allow yourself to hear the words, feel the
feeling and remember the experience. If you can place
yourself within the midst of that experience, forgive
yourself for believing that there is something wrong with
being wrong. Until today, you might have allowed yourself to
believe that if you did something wrong you might not
recover. Just for today, take a risk! Do something you fear
might be wrong. You may discover that YOU were wrong.

Klerksdorp born band PRELUDE got a major break through into
the South African music scene. They are busy building a huge
group of followers and name through out the whole of South
Africa. The band were recently added onto the day radio
play-list of music radio 5Fm.
The song “I’m not a wierdo” is rotated on the station every
day, with a very good chance of entering the top 40. They
are also receiving a lot of radio time and attention on
various other radio stations through out South Africa, and
reviews in the UK, not to mention some of South Africa's
youth orientated magazines. The band has just completed
their own music video for their single “Happy family” and
were contacted by one of the music programmes on DSTV for a
possible interview and broadcasting of the video. The song
“Special things” also reached number 17 on the top 40 of an
Internet based music website. They recently finished up
their up-coming album at B# studios and SABC Radio Park
studios. They were invited back to SABC RP studios for a
free recording session and possibly management offers. Look
out for the album
due for release in June - July 2004. They are very excited
for what the future holds for them as things are really
looking bright and promising. You can visit there website

Alabama Sekondêre Skool is gerat om die eerste uitgawe van
‘n splinternuwe
skoolkoerant die lig te laat sien. Hierdie projek vind met
die mentorskap van ‘n reklameonderneming in Klerksdorp plaas.
Op 21 April 2004 is ‘n aanvangskursus by Infoworks aangebied.
Volgens Zanette Schenk (Departementshoof:
Tale) is dié agt leerders baie opgewonde oor hul
skoolkoerant.
‘n deurlopende basis in ‘n raadgewende hoedanigheid betrokke
te bly by hierdie projek van Alabama.

It’s often said that the first thing you should buy when
planning a DIY home improvement project is a first-aid kit.
And while that may not discourage you from giving such
projects a try, says Berry Everitt, MD of the Chas Everitt
International property group, “it should make you take
precautions against the dangers that are involved in such
work”. Expert suggestions for avoiding the most common DIY
injuries are the following:
-
Always wear safety glasses or goggles, whether using power
tools, stripping paint or just hammering in a nail.
-
Protect your hearing. Use ear muffs or plugs when working
with noisy tools or mowers.
-
Wear a safety harness when working on a roof or tall
ladder.
-
Wear gloves and overalls to protect your skin when using
pesticides or installing fiberglass insulation materials.
-
Tie hair back and don’t wear loose sleeves or
jewelry
when using power tools.
-
Ventilate your work area properly, especially when using a
paint spray or chemicals like paint stripper and varnish.
-
Keep a fire extinguisher or bucket of sand handy when
working with any flammable
substance.
-
Don’t run an extension cord over an area you will
repeatedly travel during the project, because you increase
the odds of tripping over it.
-
Clean up as you go, removing spent nails or screws, empty
containers and bits of timber, tile or brick as you complete
each section of a project.
-
Wear a mask to prevent dust inhalation if you’re sawing or
sanding, but use a proper respirator if you’re working with
high fume glues and varnishes. “And finally,” says Everitt,
“you can save yourself and your family much trouble by
admitting that there are some projects – like electrical
wiring
– that are just best left to the experts.”

Today we see more colour images in a day than our early
ancestors saw in a lifetime. The technical advances of the nineteenth and twentieth
centuries have provided us with unlimited tools for
communicating visual form.
Consequently, we are bombarded with images from books,
magazines, newspapers, film, television, the internet and
numerous other influences. All these influences have
influenced our colour values and perceptions. Colour theory
is part of formal aesthetic principles which have evolved
over 30 000 years of Western civilization. Beginning in the
Paleolithic era, cave drawings are testimony to the first
organization of visual interior colour palettes.
TECHNICAL ANALYSIS
The technical analysis of colour begin with Sir Isaac
Newton’s discovery in 1666 that sunlight contains all the
colours of the rainbow. He also developed the first colour
circle. Research has shown that 80% of the human brain is
dedicated to processing visual information, and of that
process, 60% is used for colour registration!
Colour and form are two basic elements in this
communication. It is said that forms affects the intellect
and colour affects emotion.
If an object is small, we can assume it is light.
Consequently, we can easily describe form with a wide range
of precise terms, such as geometric, curved, concave,
convex, large, small, heavy and light. By contrast, we can’t
put a colour in our hands and feel it, weigh it, smell it or
taste it.
Colour is purely visual “Colour is the visual effect
that is caused by the spectral composition of the light
emitted, transmitted, or reflected by objects” (Jill
Morton, Color Voodoo #Color Logic)
In brief we can say that colour is that which is seen as
colour. When we experience that the surface has a certain
colour, this is the result of a complicated chain of factors
where our visual sense is a necessary ultimate link. How
often to who hear that we live in a grey world, well it is
true, there is no colour on the objects we see, colour is
formed in the brain by means of light reflected from
objects. Colour is light and light changes colour. Colour
originates in light. Sunlight as we perceive it is
colourless. In reality, a rainbow is testimony to the fact
that all colours are present in white light.

The new Renault Modus and the Clio will sit side-by-side
complimenting each other and both targeting small car buyers
According to Renault its design and interior style have
produced a “Friendly, comfortable, efficient cabin”. It is
well-proportioned and very bright thanks to its sunroof. In
addition to the panoramic, electrically-operated sunroof
inspired by the Mégane II, Modus also comes in a version
which offers an original, fun manual control for opening and
closing the two sunroofs.
The new Modus offers some of the
space efficiency of an MPV, but on a smaller scale. Its
sliding two- or three-way split-folding rear bench, unique
“boot chute” rear tailgate and specially designed bike rack
make it a versatile vehicle. It comes with many comfort
features, some of which are borrowed from higher-segment
models and Renault paid special attention to its ergonomics.
The driving position combines the advantages of a hatch with
those of an MPV. With its centrally positioned dashboard
that can be viewed by all its occupants, Modus makes for a
great driving experience. The Modus shares its suspension
with that of the Mégane II. Petrol engines comprise three
16-valve units: 1.2 16V, 1.4 16V, and 1.6 16V.
The chassis
and body shell of the Modus yield levels of drive ability
and Renault says there is no compromise on safety. It is the
first Renault to be produced from the Alliance platform B,
jointly developed by the Renault-Nissan Alliance. With its
generously dimensioned braking system, the Modus offers
class-leading levels of active safety.
It benefits from a Bosch 8.0 ABS-EBD, new-generation ESP
with understeer control and a tyre pressure monitoring
system. The Modus is also available with many active and
passive safety features, which include additional cornering
lights, double-distance xenon headlamps, together with an
automatic range adjustment system. Renault says the Modus
lightens the load for its users with longer service
intervals of up to 18 000
or every two years.

Volkswagen has come swooping in with its long-awaited
Renault Scenic and Toyota Verso basher, the five or seven-seater.
Touran - and the big news is that it’s available only with
diesel power - for the moment. What’s more, there are no
fewer than TWO diesels available - the trusty 74 kW
1.9-litre turbo-diesel as found in the VW Polo 1.9 TDi, and
the latest 100 kW double overhead camshaft 2-litre unit as
fitted in the Audi A3 2.0 TDI. The Touran 1.9 comes in
Trend line trim, which means it gets different 16 inch alloy
wheels to those on the 2.0 Highline version, as well as
two-tone interior trim, electric window lifts on the front
doors only, different cloth trim, standard front seats,
black trim on the door handles and roof rails, and rear
fog-lights. All versions get “Climatic” semiautomatic air
conditioning plus an RCD 300 radio with front-loader CD
player.
Driver and passenger has front airbags with
passenger side deactivation (for use when fitting a child
seat), front side airbags, a curtain airbag for front and
second row occupants, ABS brakes with electronic brake
distribution, ESP electronic stability programme (with ASR
anti-skid control), plus Brake Assist and an electronic
diff. lock.
There’s also variable speed power assisted
steering, remote central locking, an on-board trip computer,
cruise control, a removable luggage cover, net partition,
height and reach adjustable steering, a centre console box,
and manual headlight height adjustment.
The Touran can come
in either five-seat or seven-seat configuration. The former
means there’s a lot more luggage space in the back with the
seats up - VW claims 695 liters compared to only 121 liters
in the seven-seater. The second row of seats can be taken
out (they weigh around 16 kg a piece) to give a wide variety
of seating and load options, while the third row (on the
seven seater) folds away under the floor level.
The second
row seats can also be individually folded, moved sideways or
shifted backwards to re-arrange the seating configuration to
suit needs. The centre seat can even be used as a small
table by folding it forward. In typical Volkswagen fashion
the Touran is a well- finished, well thought-out product.
Its frontal styling is aggressive and modern.

Grand Prix of Europe Nürburgiring, Eifel, Germany Once a
title that altered between the national grandes épreuves in
Europe, and later an event in its own right held at
different circuits around the Continent, the European Grand
Prix has found a permanent home at Nürburgring in recent
years. Perhaps because of comparisons with the nearby
Nordschleife (the twisty, 30km track that hosted the German
GP for decades), the ultra modern new Nürburgring was seen
as rather clinical by members of the grand prix circuit
when they first raced there in 1984. Reinstated on the
calendar to host first the Luxembourg and then the European
Grand Prix, the circuit has surprised the younger generation
of grand prix drivers with its challenging character and
above average number of overtaking points. Though criticized
by some for being “Mickey Mouse”, a loop immediately after
the start-finish straight introduced two years ago has
resulted in a variety of different lines and some exciting
incidents.

Kia has joined the mini-car fray with its new Picanto - and
pricing is very competitive, dramatically under-cutting its
natural Korean opposition while still offering acceptable
trim and safety levels.
A five-door hatch with European styling, it is neat and
attractive while offering compact dimensions for parking
coupled with good use of available interior space.
From the side there's more than a touch of the new Citroen
C2 in the way the windows are staggered, while the front
sees a strong grille treatment flanked by large headlamps
and underscored by big black bumpers. The engine package
comprises a 1 086 cm3 SOHC unit that pushes out
47 kW at 5 500 r/min and 99 Nm of torque at 3 000 r/min.
Kia says it'll take you 15.2 seconds to reach 100km/h from
rest in the Picanto, while top speed is 155km/h. The car
comes well-equipped in its price bracket, with a modern
interior that boasts soft-touch plastics on the dashboard
and door trim, together with bright and modern materials.
There's enough space for four adults, with rear seat space
sufficient provided the driver isn't too tall. However,
luggage capacity with the seats up is limited to only 157
litres, although folding and flopping the seats forward
(40/60 split) can increase this to 882 litres.
The Picanto comes standard with a driver's side airbag,
together with dual side impact beams in the doors, as well
as a built-in battery saver, height adjustable head lights,
impact resistant (up to 4km/h) bumpers, rear window
demister, rear fog lights, and remote keyless entry and
immobilizer using a transponder key, plus a burglar alarm.
There are also Isofix child seat anchors and child locks in
the back doors. There's also no spare wheel - a kit with
puncture fix liquid and a compressor is supplied instead -
but those who prefer the security of their own full-size
spare can order one for an extra R875, complete with jack
and wheel spanner!
The Picanto has 14 inch steel wheels with full-size wheel
covers, and the suspension set up includes front McPherson
struts and rear torsion beam axle with anti-roll bars. There
are 241mm ventilated front disc brakes and 234 mm
drums at the rear.
Instrumentation is restricted to a large speedo and a fuel
gauge, while water temperature is indicated by different
coloured lights - blue for cold, green for normal, red for
too hot! Circular dial-type ventilation controls are easy to
operate.
The driver's seat is six-way adjustable, while the rear seat
backrest has three different slant options to increase
either load space or comfort levels.
In the dashboard are two storage trays below the steering
wheel on the driver's door side as well as a two-level glove
box. Picanto service intervals are pegged at 15 000 km and
there's a 3 year/100 000 km warranty with a 3 year unlimited
km roadside assistance plan.
