Two Mexicans have been lost in the desert for weeks. At death ’s door, they see a tree in the distance. As they get nearer, they see that it ’s draped with rasher upon rasher of bacon: smoked bacon, crispy bacon, life-giving nearly-raw juicy bacon, all sorts of bacon.

“Hey, Pepe ” says the first Mexican, “ees a bacon tree! We ’re saved!!” So Pepe goes on ahead and runs up to the tree. As he gets to within five

feet, he ’s gunned down in a hail of bullets. His friend drops down on the sand and calls across to the dying Pepe.

“Pepe!! Pepe!! Que pasa hombre?” With his last breath Pepe calls ut, “Ugh, run, amigo, run, ees not a bacontree, ees a ham bush ”

JOIN THE CITY MALL ’S X-MAS CHARITY DRIVE

The City Mall of Klerksdorp has in the past seen many of its charitable causes being embraced with the effervescent spirit of Christmas. These heartfelt causes are part and parcel of the Mall ’s gallant efforts to give back to a cherished community in a bid to extend its appreciation for the community ’s loyalty to the City Mall during recent years.

And this year will be no different, in conjunction with Advalue Advertising and Marketing, a special Christmas drive with a twist will see many charitable causes also embracing the Christmas spirit in this unique venture to generate much-needed funds. This year the City Mall ’s beloved Christmas tree will be adorned with beautiful strings of globes covered in small brown paper bags.

The City Mall invites various business owners and City Mall tenants in Klerksdorp to “light ”up the globes. The concept of this fundraising event is that businesses compete against each other in a unique effort to see who can purchase the most pygmy globes.

A mere R100 per globe will see to it that a dynamic Christmas spirit “team ”races against time to ensure that identified charities can also enjoy Christmas the City Mall way!

Special recognition will be given to participating businesses by way of engraving their names on a board that will be placed next to the Christmas tree, aptly called the  “Wall of Supporters ”. Your News will report on this fundraising drive and recognition will be given to those entities that made a worthy contribution. The business who has made the biggest contribution will have the esteemed honour of handing over the collected money to the charities involved. Come on and get moving! See how many brown paper bags can be removed from those pygmy globes so that the City Mall ’s Christmas tree can brighten up with an unprecedented glow that is the epitome of the true Christmas spirit …

For more information, please contact Suné Rowan at Advalue Advertising and Marketing. Tel:(018)468 5152. Your News will report on this fundraising drive and recognition will be given to those entities that made.  Do your Christmas shopping @the Triest Training  centre

EXPERIENCE KLERKSDORP MUSEUM

The Klerksdorp Museum is housed in the Old Prison and apart from the goal

exhibition, they are also dealing with social history and physical science. The warder ’s house next to the museum is also worth a visit with its antiques and rooms illustrating the difference between the Victorian, Edwardian and Art Nouveau styles.

There is a lovely gift shop where you can do your X- mas shopping in a tranquil atmosphere. The shop boasts a variety of gifts and ornaments, ranging from

glass ceramics, brass ethnic products and many more.

The prices are also very reasonable. For the most women, it is difficult to buy a present for the men in their lives, but look no further. The museum distills its own mampoer and with an alcohol percentage of 55% it is the ideal gift to knock him out! Art-and crafts workshops are presented at the museum at least once a month. On 13 and 20  November the museum is presenting quilt workshops. Book in advance and make a lovely X-mas quilt. The museum is alive and well and you can visit it at the corner of Lombaard and Margaretha Prinsloo Street every weekday from 10:00 –13:00, 14:00 –16:30 and Saturdays from 09:30 –12:00. For your convenience the museum is also open on public holidays from 14:00 –17:00. Entrance is very affordable at R2-00 for adults and R1-00 for children. Don ’t wait any longer, visit the museum right now!

Hospice Foundation

Hospice sets Target of R50 000 Klerksdorp Hospice has set them selves  a target of releasing 5000 balloons at the Klerksdorp Pick &Pay  Hypermarket in Wilkoppies on the 29th of November. The idea behind the project is not only raising much needed funds but also to give people the chance to free themselves from feelings that hamper them from moving forward in live.

By inserting messages into the balloons and releasing them it will be a strong symbolic process whereby people can free themselves from past traumatic experiences. If you don ’t have something holding you back in the past than this is your chance of celebrating life today, buy a few balloons, insert a positive message and contribute to helping other not so fortunate people.

Balloons are sold for R10 each and can be bought every Saturday by Pick&Pay ’s front door or from the Wilmed Park Oncology center (018 468 1420). There are some prices that can be won.

The person who buys the most balloons will win a weekend for two people at Sun City and the second price is a weekend for two people at Mabalingwe Game Lodge. Pick &Pay will also be giving away surprise prizes on the day. And they

are planning a fun filled day with entertainment to keep the crowds happy.

People that are interested in taking part in the festivities can contact Nellie dela Ray at (018) 406 8000 for more details on this.

AHI KONGRES SPREEK BESIGHEID SE ROL IN S.A.AAN

Mayor gives feedback on Orkney Vaal.

At the Executive Mayors annual Banquet held on 1 November he had the following to say about this highly debated issue. And we quote:

“One of the most debated issue this year in exception of rates and taxes, was undoubtedly the purchase of Orkney Vaal Resort. I must point out today that, the

move to purchase the resort was not an economically as well as social development uncalculated move.

As government responsible to all South Africa living in our area of jurisdiction, we cannot abdicate our primary responsibility, which  is the welfare in general of our community. The truth is we helped our residents who were taken for a ride by those who thought they were clever enough to fool them forever.

The purchase price stand at R14 million, with total assets of plus minus 30 million. Unsuspecting elderly members of our white community invested their life savings into this venture hoping to have a heaven on earth as promised.

Although payments were being by the residents, those payments were not made to the council. As such there were no adequate services rendered to the resort with more than 300 stands, this was a shame on the developer. We bought Orkney Vaal back and as true custodian of development.

The municipal services are now being supplied without interruption and already we there is a plus or minus 60 thousands rand a month profit. In addition Council has been paid arrear services from the estate of R442 000,00 and the Council claim of R1,79 million due by the estate must still be paid by the state. As council we were directly involved and we have prevented the loss of millions of rands of invested money for and in favour of residents of Orkney Vaal.

Local Council third in Vuna Awards

Vuna, a Xhosa word meaning to reap or to harvest. That is exactly what our Local City Council did last Thursday when they received a third prize in the Vuna awards held in Mabatho.

They harvested a cheque to the value of R250 000.Provincial Government, Salga, DBSA &NPI are currently involved in a judging process of all, local and district councils in South Africa. The competition criterion is based on a five point system judging councils on Service Delivery, Institution Development, Municipal Transformation, Financial Viability and Local Economic Development.

The first tree places in each province are entered into a national competition, and the winners between the 27 municipalities will be announced on the fifth of December 2003. It is quite a shame that all municipalities are judged in the same competition, because Klerksdorp, which is an amalgamated municipality had to compete against much smaller municipalities, like Potchefstroom and Lightenburg who has a much smaller areas to manage and are surely faced with much less and smaller problems than a city like Klerksdorp.

The money? “We will look at where we need to improve on the judging criteria, and spend the money on improving

those areas where we need to improve in order to improve our service to the community, ”said Thupi Mokhatla Municipal Manager in an interview with us on Monday. Congratulations to Council, our thoughts are with you for the December awards.

Local Council Changing Image

The department of Local Economic Development has embarked on a process of changing City Council ’s image. A local company Arnold & Wessels, who is well known and respected in our city, has been appointed to help Council with this process and so far what has come from it can only be praised.

The plan is to introduce the new image as what Council ’s budget allows, so that they don ’t waste already printed stationary and marketing material. The Councils annual report that was released at the Mayors Banquet, had the new image on the front page, and symbolizes a City of People working together for a better future.

ABSA offers relief to first time home buyers

Hardly a month after launching FastForward to the market, Absa, the country ’s leader in mortgage finance, has come up with another attractive home loan offer. The option, aptly named First Time Home Loan, has been specifically structured to assist first time homebuyers. Whilst Absa has catered for this market in the past, this latest innovation takes best advice to new levels.

Jaco Grobler, Managing Executive: Absa Home Loans, says that although mortgage products for first time home buyers are fairly common in the market today, the approaches of various banks differ. The route that Absa has chosen to follow is to separate the purchase price of the property from the costs that need to be financed, while still only granting the client one total home loan amount.

The amount of the total loan granted will amount to as much as 108%of the purchase price (i.e.the portion for costs is a maximum 8%of the purchase price amount). The 8% will be the amount that is “separated ”and placed in the secondary account.

The benefit of this distinction is that the client can structure the repayment of the costs to be over a shorter period (Absa recommends a five year term) than his/her long term home loan, and thus save a significant amount in interest. This is achieved via the Absa MultiPlan product option which allows a loan to be split into two accounts (a primary and secondary account), with different term of repayment applicable to each. Most customers don ’t stay in their first home forever –their lifestyles change and with that so do their homes.

Should the costs portion be added to the loan amount (and not separated as with the Absa option), the client is in real danger of not having paid enough of the costs portion off when they sell their property. This may result in their outstanding balance at the bank being higher than the amount, which they “clear ”when they sell their property. It is important to remember that although most properties do escalate in value every year, when one sells the property there are also costs involved, including estate agents commission should you not sell privately.

Depending on the repayment to income ratio, clients may choose either a variable or fixed interest rate term (12,18 or 24 months).  The First Time Home Loan is only available to single or joint applicants who are buying homes for the first time. Loan amounts range between R120 000 and R400 000. First Time Home Loan clients will be required to take out life cover, comprising of full balance in the event of death, permanent disability for all occupations, temporary disability cover for a maximum of 24 months, and retrenchment cover for a maximum of six months.

HOW DOES MLS WORK?

FOR SELLERS

Your agent will put the details of your home which is for sale on the MLS network and arrange an “open hour ”, known in some regions as “open house ”,which is like a show day but is held during the week and is for MLS agents to view your home and give an estimate on the expected selling price. You now not only

FOR BUYERS

Your agent will ask you about the home you are looking for and then search on the computer system for homes which will meet your needs. Your agent will phone the sellers of selected properties to arrange a viewing.

WHAT WILL THE MLS SERVICE COST?

NOTHING!

The agents who list and sell your home will share the normal commission with each other after the property is sold. You get more service at no extra cost! By dealing with a MLS agent you get the combined professional service and advice of many. Sellers of selected properties to arrange a viewing. have the price you can expect buyers to offer for your home, but you also have many agents with a firsthand knowledge of the home about which they can tell buyers.

Baie dankie, my e-pos is marketing@yourcity .co.za. Sou iemand braaf genoeg wees, of meskien is u as publiek lus om u opinie hieroor te lig ons sal graag van u will hoor.

Toyota Prado 3.0 TD VX, more than just a 4x4

INTERESTING how some vehicles develop as they evolve. For some time now, Toyota SA has offered two Land Cruiser models, namely the full-blown 100 and the slightly smaller 90,otherwise known as the Prado. As the 100 moved upmarket to tackle the Range Rover as a premium status (and priced)SUV, it left the Prado to carry the Toyota flag in the serious 4x4 world: the cultured off-roader that you would actually buy to go off-road exploring.

Maintaining separate chassis/body construction, but with an all-new design, the latest junior ‘Cruiser has increased in size over its predecessor. This, together with its still macho styling, gives it a very imposing presence. Length is up by 80 mm to 4 850 mm, width by 55 to 1 875 mm, matched by increases in the dimensions that affect vehicle dynamics: the wheelbase has been stretched by a substantial 115 to 2 790 mm, and front and rear tracks by,respectively,70 and 65 to 1 575 mm at both ends. Height, however, has been reduced by 10 to 1 905 mm. The overall effect is a lowering of the vehicle ’s centre of gravity that, combined with a stiffened chassis, is aimed at improving ride and handling -as well as NVH -to levels comparable with a monocoque construction.

The idea, then, is to be a little more car, a little less commercial. Climbing aboard, it is obvious we are talking BIG car, though. New Prado is a substantial piece of real estate, offering a fine view of the landscape. The enlarged dimensions afford acceptable accommodation for eight average-sized people, but with little luggage space for anything more than overnight bags. However, the rear (third) bench is split 50:50 and each side can be folded forward and sideways and clipped to the sidewall, or removed altogether, to provide some carrying versatility.(Folded, the seats take up 80 dm3 of space.)Typical of such layouts, there is no cargo cover to conceal goods, which is a drawback

But no matter where you sit, a three-point seatbelt, a height-adjustable head restraint (the one for the rearmost middle seat can be stored in a zipped compartment to increase rearward vision), and some backrest angle adjustment is provided.

Upholstery is leather with perforated inserts. There are air-con vents either side of the roof above the second and third rows of seats, with temperature control (including auto mode) independent from that up front. Headroom is excellent throughout, and only legroom right at the back is limited. There are grab handles above each side window as well as on the A-and B-pillars. Drink holders are set into the rear-quarter panels and the middle seat ’s fold-down centre armrest, so comfort aft is not compromised too much. Fixings for kiddie chairs are part of the middle row of seats.

Oh, there is a 12-volt power socket in the rear, too. Naturally, up front, things are a little more involved. Electric seat cushion height and backrest angle adjustment, side-to-side climate control, custom radio/cassette (with nice big buttons) plus six-CD shuttle (housed in the big lockable facia cubby), height-adjustable front seatbelts, dual drink holder in the floor console, a big centre armrest/cubby with movable pad, 12-volt power socket, illuminated vanity mirror behind both visors, dual map lights, a spectacles holder, and powered windows (all round) are all part of the kit. The driver gets a rake-and reach-adjustable steering wheel, electric mirror adjustment (albeit hidden from view by the four-spoke wheel), electric lumbar support, cruise control, left- foot rest, remote fuel flap and bonnet releases awkwardly placed low down in the footwell, and a rheostat for the VX-only Optitron instrument lighting system.

Befitting the off-road persona, together with a digital clock there is a compass bearing readout, and a trip computer that also includes barometric

pressure and altitude. Hi ho, hi ho, it ’s off to play

we go … -Article from www.toyota.co.za

Formula One party!!

It has been a while since we have had the experience of having such a nail biting end to the Formula One Championship. Micheal Schumacher has been dominating the seen in such a way over the past 5 years, it has been almost inconceivable that any of his rivals would be able to dethrone the master of F1. This year it almost did happen, we have been witness to one of most exciting years of racing. There has been massive crashes (goes without saying) spectacular passes and even, Micheal got lapped by Fernando Alonso in a Renault.

What will next year hold? Will he do it again or will Alonso, Rubens or Juan-Pablo take it from him. Willie Walker, Micheal an Ralf ’s manager believes that the younger of the two brothers will take it next year. Or at least that is what he said in a recent interview. I on the others hand, wonder what he smokes (Willie that is) For one the team he drives for seems to be lost somewhere in the

woods in Germany, and secondly he only won two races all year this year. Ralf will have to do a lot more to win the championship, he defiantly has the potential, his records does prove this, but he seems to be lacking something.

To celebrate this past years racing the Ferrari F1 Supporters Club is hosting a big Formula One party on the 15th of November 2003 @the Greek Hall, in Neserhof.

“Last years party was a hoot of fun and ending this year without one would just be wrong ” said one of the organizers. The highlight of the evening for many might be the visit from some of the guys from SEFAC (Ferrari owners club) who will be coming down to Klerksdorp on the day in, yes you ’re your right ! Their Ferraris

Sasha from 5FM might also be there.

So don ’t miss it, tickets are limited and are moving as fast as Ferraris (I lie, nothing does, does it ?) Contact 082 672 7890.

Tickets cost R100 per person and if the kids want to come along bring them. They only pay R50 if they are younger than 6 years. Party starts @ 19:00 there will be a cash bar. Visit  www.ferrarisupporters.co.za

Orkney Golf Klub Wys Sy Staal.

The quality of a club is not only determined by the quality of the greens and fairways, but also by the quality of service and hospitality, and Orkney Golf Club surely excels in all these aspects.

It’s never too early to start saving for your kids

You want to give your kids the best you can. And one of the best things you can do is start a savings plan that will grow with your child. Even on the tiniest of budgets. Here are the options.

How much should you invest to give your child a better future? Would you believe R150 a month can make a difference? Yes, it can - your R150 a month can grow into R32 280 in only 10 years!

Now imagine what you can do for your child's future if you could save for twice that long!

Education is one of the most lasting but expensive gifts you can give your child. A public school education could cost from R3,500 a year in Grade 1 up to R6,000 a year in Grade 12. Starting a three-year university degree this year could cost R75,233, and a three-year Technikon diploma as much as R53,322.

These figures will just increase. So the earlier you start planning and saving the better. But how much should you save? And what are your options?

If you save R150 per month from up to your child's 10th birthday, you’ll receive a full R232 280. If you start saving on your child’s 5th birthday, you’ll only receive R7, 808 when the child is 10. That is, if you get a 10% return on your savings, which is annually added to your investment.

One of the best ways to save for your child’s future is with an education policy. If something should happen to you, the built-in life cover guarantees that you continue saving. Such a policy will typically cost R150 a month. And you'd have to commit to a minimum savings period of five years.

Another savings option is a unit trust fund. Your investment is linked to the performance of a number of shares on the stock exchange. This means your money may grow a lot faster, but you get no guarantees. For most unit trust investments, you'll need at least R200 a month.

If you are already stretching your budget, but you're still determined to start saving for your child, you can open a savings account at some banks for as little as R50, or at the Post Office for as little as R20. All you need to start is the minimum amount and your ID book or birth certificate.  You decide how much you can afford to save each month.

The bottom line is that it is not so much the amount you can afford to save, but the decision to start saving right now that is important. The sooner, the better.
