Hold on to your hats !!

It is amazing just how fast a year goes by, I know it’s only the beginning of April, but let me tell you, when I woke up this morning, it felt like we should be somewhere in the middle of January, but o boy no!! One of these days Easter will be over, spring will pass and before we realize it we will be buying Christmas presents again.

I believe there is a saying from some old wise man that goes: “Time flies when you are having fun” or was it a wise woman. I don’t know, but I’m sure that must be what is happening. I hope you are enjoying this year as much as the team @ Yourcity does, because if you are, life is a worth living.

So forget about the war, concentrate on yourself and enjoy what is left of the year.

Ed.

Crime is down !

According to Supt. Danie Cronje from the SAPS in Klerksdorp, crime has dropped considerably over the past few years in Klerksdorp. This is a very welcoming thought not only to business people, but also to each and every home owner.

Supt. Cronje stated that reported cases has dropped from over 1350 in 1996 to less than a 1000 in 2002. Although less serious crimes like theft from motor vehicles and stock theft has increased, more serious crimes like rape, murder, aggravated assault and attempted murder has decreased considerably over the past five to seven  years.

You might be wondering what all this has to do with a publication that is focused on supplying people with information about the local real estate market, well dear home owner, crime has a great influence on the value of property in general. People are willing to pay more, in order to live in a crime free area, and visa versa. If crime in the CBD can be controlled and kept under control, over time the CBD of Klerksdorp will regain its value and business people as well as the community will regain trust in doing business in the CBD. This will have a positive effect on the local economy, which will be a benefit to all concerned.

Supt. Cronje did however say that the SAPS can't do it all on their own, and called for the community to be involved at keeping crime under control, by being aware of what goes on around us, and not being negligent: don't leave valuable goods on car seats and making sure you lock-up when you leave your home.

Surely the SAPS deserves our thanks and also our support.

Cleaning of Vacant Stands

The Department of Health Services have sent out over 800 letters to owners of vacant stands in the Klerksdorp area appealing to owners to clean up their stands.

Owners have been given 21 days to clean up their act and to comply with legislation.  The law does not request any warning from local authorities but warning notices have been sent out.  Many owners have already reacted to the appeal.  Mr. Booysen, Manager of Health Services, and The City Council of Klerksdorp would like to thank them for their prompt response and action.

Mr. Booysen would like to caution vacant stand owners that the Council would be appointing contractors on the advice of environmental practitioners.  The contractors will be commissioned to begin cleaning stands at a cost of fifty cents per square meter.  Vacant stand owners will be invoiced for this service.  Enquiries can be directed to: (018) 473 9501.

This clean up campaign co-insides with the National Cleanest City Competition which Klerksdorp have entered this year.  One of the criteria for judging is the management and cleanliness on vacant stand.  “Community participation and involvement is absolutely vital for the success of our entry”. Watch your local newspapers for more information on The Cleanest City Competition 2003.  For more information on this competition please do not hesitate to contact Sandy Botha: (018) 406 8335 or Victor Muller: (018) 464 1386.

This Weeks Movie Review:

The Wild Thornberrys Movie

You don’t need extraordinary powers to do extraordinary things.

From the Serengeti Plain of Africa to a proper London boarding school, Eliza Thomberry – television's favorite 12-year-old who can communicate with animals – embarks on an epic adventure like no other in her first film odyssey, The Wild Thornberrys Movie. Bringing the precocious young globetrotter
face-to-face with evil poachers who are endangering the lives of nature's wild creatures, this thrilling new animated feature is based on the Emmy-nominated (2000-01) Nickelodeon hit series The Wild Thomberrys.

In the film, as greedy poachers descend upon the jungles of Africa, Eliza arrives at one of the most decisive moments she'll ever face and alone holds not only the fate of the entire Thornberry clan in the balance, but also that of her unique extended family of animals. As she stands to lose the two things that have made her life every kid's dream – her ability to talk with animals and her experiences in traveling around the world –Eliza must find the strength and courage to save the ones she loves… and time is running out!
