Eating a variety of colorful fruits and
vegetables every day provides powerful nutrient properties
that help fight diseases
Fruits and vegetables of a particular color have
specific nutrient properties, are easy to digest and provide
the body with an excellent source of energy.
They assist the body weight and provide optimum
nutrition.
Rush to reds that may assist in reducing the risks
of certain types of cancer.
Opt for orange to help reduce heart disease and cancer
and to help maintain strong bones and teeth. Get your greens
to help get rid of cancer-causing chemicals.
According to CANSA’s Health Programs Director.
Mr Joel Perry these are just some of the many ways fruits and
vegetables helps your body fight disease and achieve good
health.
Among the food that we eat, fresh food and
vegetables are not up for discussion.
Perry added that if the only change people make to
their diet is to eat at least five servings of fruit and
vegetables each day, the rate of cancer could drop by as much
as 20%.
“All the current research indicates that the
more colors of fruit and vegetables you see on your plate,
the greater the health benefits, “said Mr. Perry.
“Using a minimum of five a day, which means at least
two portions of fruit and three portions of vegetables daily ,
is a good way to start eating a balanced diet and living a
healthy lifestyle”.
With CANSA’s recent repositioning and Health
Promotion strategy, nutrition and healthy eating is just part
of a total package on sustaining health and cancer prevention.
CANSA’s message is health promotion, which is a
package of proper nutrition, exercise, healthy lifestyle and
positive mental health.
Nutrition is not just about eating “good
food”. It
involves insuring that during the process of food preparation,
essential nutrients such as vitamins, mineral, enzymes and
bioflavonoids must not be sacrificed to enhance or alter the
taste of foods.
With South Africa’s wide variety of fresh fruits
and vegetables, don’t waste a minute in living life to the
full providing your body with the right fuel.
Follow the advice of CANSA and the 5-a-day Foundation
to build healthy nutrition habits that ensure minimum
protection of disease in your body.

Fitness
Tips
Performance athletes, body builders and even those of us just trying
to stay in shape and keep healthy through exercise often
struggle with compromised immune systems fatigued, aching
muscles, general tiredness and
that overall run down feeling.
We offer the following advise in the hope that it can assist those
who are struggling with any of these challenges.
Consistent strenuous exercise places extra demands on the immune
system and many athletes are familiar with upper respiratory
tract infections, cold and flu symptoms, digestive disorders
and the like. To keep the immune system in peak performance
eat large portions of life-giving raw vegetables and fruits,
nuts, seeds and whole grains.
Supplement with friendly bacteria (Lactobacillus Acidophilus and
Bifidum Longum),
“Intestiflora” made by the Agricultural Research Council in
Pretoria is a great friendly bacteria supplement. Friendly
bacteria enhance absorption of nutrients and vitamins and keep
the nasty yeasts in the gut in check.
Use a good quality Esterfied Vitamin C (Ester C from Solgar) or a
good Buffered C (Calcium Ascorbate) combined with
bioflavanoids to boost immunity and assist tissue growth and
repair. If taking Calcium Ascorbate use it in divided doses of
about 1000mg three to four times a day. Another great immune
booster is the amino acid Glutamine, which occurs naturally in
raw spinach and parsley or comes supplementally in powder,
tablets and capsules as L-Glutamine. Glutamine and Taurine
combinations have been recorded as giving 53% better results
than Glutamine on its own. Take Glutamine in divided doses of
about 2.5-3.5 grams before and after exercise and at two other
times in the day to facilitate increased absorption.
Siberian Ginseng, an adaptogenic herb, is a great supplement for
athletes to take to enhance immunity and help the body cope
while under the increased demands placed on it by a strenuous
exercise program. It’s
great for fatigue because it spares glycogen (the form of
glucose stored in the liver and muscle cells) by increasing
the use of fatty acids as an energy source. The Russian
Olympics team admitted to using Siberian Ginseng since 1972
and many athletes the world over use it in varying doses with
great success.
Aching muscles struggling to repair can be assisted by supplementing
with Glutamine or the Glutamine-Taurine combo’s mentioned
earlier. Glutamine is the most abundant free amino acid found
in the muscles of the body and is readily available when
needed for the synthesis of skeletal muscle proteins.
Flax Seed Oil reduces the time needed for muscles to repair and
those performing weight-bearing exercise or those experiencing
joint pains as a result of exercise may be pleasantly
surprised by supplementing with this Omega 3-rich oil.
Remember to include rest and sleep as part of your training program.
You need time to recover and rebuild. Many exercise
enthusiasts seem to forget or ignore this simple truth.
The last hint for keeping fit is to be aware of maintaining a
healthy ph balance of body fluids and tissue. Don’t over
supplement with protein, especially animal protein as this
will leave an acid ash in your system, slowing repair and
recovery. A body which is constantly in an acid crisis will
leach calcium from the bones and teeth and be more susceptible
to disease, most of which thrive in an acid environment.
For a quick fix use
supplemental “ Base Powder” or “ Base Powder Sport”,
but for the long haul pay attention to eating habits and
include alkaline-forming raw , fresh veggies and fruit,
especially Avocados and eat millet.
We hope these ideas can assist you in keeping fit and staying that
way.
Yours for Quality Health the Fun Way,
Robin Smith

korporatiewe funksies maak.
Hulle tree egter ook by ‘roadshows’, ‘rockfeeste’,
kunstefeeste, teaters, skole, plattelandse sale asook
‘ou-tannie-tee’s op.
En die reaksie by hul optredes?
Natuurlik OORWELDIGEND!!

Bespreking is noodsaaklik.
bring, kan Leonie Spangenberg skakel by (018) 462 3546.

In
our previous edition dated 5 Feb. 2004, we said that Maureem
Modisele is the Minister for Economic Development and Tourism.
This is wrong and we would like to apologize, she is actually
the MEC for Economic Development and Tourism in the North West
Province. We do apologize for any inconvenience caused by
this.

We are all familiar with the concept of mirrors,
remember when you where small and you just discovered one.
There was someone there, someone you have never seen, and
after a while you discovered that this was you. And some years
later you used a small mirror to shine light into a teachers
eyes at an athletic meeting, very funny wasn’t it.
Mirrors are sometimes funny things, they are able
to tell business leaders to keep to their own concerns, they
are able to query with audacity decisions that they do not
have the right to query. They are able to lead communities to
believe things that are false and they are able to hatch
half-truths and to blow these half-truths into mass community
meetings that then eventually does not deliver the promised
numbers.
The mirror might be able to “mis”lead and to
blow half-truths into the wind, but mirrors that shine what
they want to shine, will not break a community that has the
right and the ability to think for itself.
“With great power comes
great responsibility” and “absolute power absolutely
corrupts.”

Indaba Trust beslis.
koppie in Klerksdorp.
koste ‘n ander fasiliteit sal moet inrig of selfs oprig.
beoefen.”
tevrede sou wees” as daar tot so ‘n ooreenkoms gekom kan
word.

Some residents might not know this, but there is a
monthly Council meeting, and the public is welcome to attend.
Attending these meetings will give residents a better
understanding of the decisions made by Council that sometimes
effect their everyday lives.
The next meeting to be held is on Monday 23
February and starts at 18:00 in Council Chamber.

weggesteek is nie.
Borge

Most of us dream of owning a drop top, but the requirements of family
and luggage space ensures that not many of us ever feel the
wind in our hair while we enjoy our Sunday afternoon drive.
Well the good news is that those days are over, and at the
price of the new 307cc, it might just be possible for some
households budgets to afford one.
This
Saturday (21 Feb) will see the launch of the newest edition to
the Peugeot range.
Buyers
will be able to choose from two different 2lit motors, the one
delivers 100kW and the “sooped up” version 130kW. There is
a choice of manual( R 299 900) or Triptonic style
gearbox (R 309 900) for the 100kW, but the 130kW ( R
329 900) comes with a manual box only. (A good thing if
you ask me)
If
the asking price sounds high, consider that the Audi A4
cabriolet starts at R483 000 and the BMW 330Ci convertible
cost R476 000. It would be unfair to compare these three cars
(and we are not trying to) as they all over different engine
sizes and finishing, but what can be compared are the fact
that all three has; two doors, four seats and a retractable
roof. The 330Ci does off course not have a hard top, but that
being said, buyers looking for a family car that is also an
open top cruiser should probably consider these three cars
before making a buying decision.
What
does the 307cc offer: To start of, safety is always a concern.
The 307cc has a four-star EuroNCAP crash test rating. Apart
from this it offers front and side driver and passenger
airbags, ABS with EBD and also ESP. It has an electronic
rollover detection system, with hoops retracted behind the
headrest. Some features that might impress buyers are
automatic rain-sensing wipers, heated door mirrors, and 5mm
thick side windows that automatically lower when you touch the
door handle. This allows the windows to pull away from the top
door seals.
Peugeot
is no stranger to convertible cars; they introduced the worlds
first electrically retracted roof in 1936 when they launched
the 401 Eclipse. Lets hope that all this experience comes
together in a convertible car that consumers will not only be
able to admire, but also afford.
The local Peugeot branch in Klerksdorp will be unfailing their 307cc
Saturday morning at 8h00.
Everyone is welcome to come have a look, and maybe even
a test drive.

Toyota’s new Prius petrol/electric hybrid car
continues to make a major impact on the international motoring
scene. The latest accolade to come the way of this innovative
hatchback is the North American Car of the Year award.
The award was announced at the recent Detroit Motor Show and
this is the first Toyota product to be honored in this annual
contest. A jury of 50 leading automotive writers and
broadcasters voted Prius No. 1 by a wide margin over two other
cars considered as finalists out of a “short list” of 17
new cars on the American market. Prius received 298 points,
compared to 167 for the Mazda RX8 and 113 for the Cadillac XLR.
The award, which has been made since 1994, honors vehicles
that establish new benchmarks in areas including design,
innovation, safety and handling. It is the only independent,
international vehicle award in North America.
This latest accolade follows Prius being named 2004 Car of the
Year by Motor Trend, a leading American motoring magazine, and
one of the Top 10 cars of 2004 in the prestigious ratings of
Car and Driver, another US motoring publication. It is the
first hybrid vehicle to achieve these honors. The latest
Prius, introduced last year, initially in Japan and then in
the United States, was also adjudged winner of the Technology
section for 2003 among 10 category winners in the annual
automotive awards made by Autocar, the leading British
motoring magazine.
Demand for the new Prius is outstripping supply and Toyota is
instituting plans for overtime working and increased
production capacity, with normal production going up from the
original 7 500 units a month to 10 000 a month, starting in
the second quarter of 2004.
The very economical and low emission Prius hybrid has had the
fastest sales start of any new Toyota model in the United
States besides strong demand in the Japanese domestic market.
Already TMC has increased its Prius sales plan for the United
States for 2004 from an original 36 000 to 47 000 units; 10
000 Prius orders had been placed in the US before the car was
even launched.

Saterdag 7 Februarie was nie net ‘n goeie dag
baan by die skougronde.

1970’s in Australië gehad. Die spelreëls is dieselfde as
krieket.
balle per beurt), so wedstryd duur ongeveer ‘n uur en ‘n
half.
Elke speler boul twee (2) beurte. Die bouler kan
nie twee boulbeurte na mekaar boul nie
Die kolfbeurt bestaan uit 4 seksies. Elke seksie
bestaan uit 4 boulbeurte. Die kolfspan kolf in pare van twee
(2). Die kolfpaar kolf die totale 4 boulbeurte. Wanneer ‘n

die Harry Oppenheiner Stadion by Orkney plaasvind, is vanjaar
Tydens ‘n byeenkoms op 7 Februarie by Hoerskool
spronge-atleet, Luan Steenkamp as die beste gewigstoter, Noel
Meer as die beste spiesgooier en Spruyt Adendorff as die beste
middelafstande-atleet.
se M/16 in 1975
(51,3sek).
verspring-rekord (1977: M/16)
van 5.47m.

Who is Council ?
In our series of articles that covers Council
it’s people and it’s function, we would next like to focus
on the Deputy Municipal Manager – Technical Services
The following was taken from Klerksdorp City
Council Annual report for 2002/2003
“The introduction of an amalgamated municipality
with and Executive Mayor and the Mayoral Committee comprising
of members with specific portfolios together with the size of
the amalgamation, has presented a new challenge to the
municipality in order to ensure the smooth and streamline
execution of duties aimed at the new developmental local
municipalities.
Due to the sizable measure of management in the
form of planning, organizing, guiding and control to be
exercised in order to keep the Municipal activities running
smoothly a division of responsibility within the office of the
Municipal manager was necessitated.
Municipal departments compromises a conglomerate
of professions and with the Integrated Development Plan as the
center of all activities, the various professions need to
compliment one another so that effective services can benefit
our community.
This document will highlight the various
activities in each of the technical departments and the
progress that has been made within these intricate departments
Each of these departments has been equipped with dynamic,
professional and enthusiastic management and staff who are
dedicated to providing better services to
the community. They all contribute to the effective day to day
management of the City Council of Klerksdorp”
MR GERHARD STRYDOM
Under Mr. Strydom falls Civil Engineering,
Electrical Engineering and also Public Safety. In our next
edition we will cover Civil Engineering and Public Safety.
This week we are looking at the Electrical Engineering Dept.
DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING SERVICES
“This department is without doubt one of the
most important departments as far as services are concerned.
Mr. Wynand Viljoen and his competent team are
responsible for providing our customers with electricity.
Services delivery is of utmost importance to this
department. This
is reflected in the 2002/3 IDP and capital budget.
An amount of R 6.4 million was spent on the
upgrading of the existing network, electrification project and
street lighting.
ELECTRIFICATION

ELECTRIFICATION 2003/2004
An amount of R 3 800 000 has been budgeted for the
remainder of Jouberton Ext 23 and an application was admitted
to the NER for additional funding.
CAPITAL PROJECTS
39 Project to the value of R6.4 Million., were
approved for the financial year 2002/3 of which all projects
were completed by the end of June 2003.
JOB CREATION
Four permanent post were created during the year
2003/4 and we as a department were to create a total of 19
jobs by sub-contracting and providing temporary employment on
many of our projects throughout the year.
CAPITAL PROJECTS
39 Capital projects were approved this year and
were al completed by the end of June 2003 – with no
rollovers.
ADDITIONAL FUNDING
An application for additional funding was
submitted to the NER, which will greatly assist our endeavors
to electrify the whole of Klerksdorp within the next five
years.
CHALLENGES
During December 2002 abnormal weather conditions
were experienced. This
caused major damage to the high an low voltage networks.
Emergency personnel worked around the clock an
performed excellently under abnormal circumstances.
GARAGE
The Electrical Department is responsible for the
daily management and maintenance of approximately 1 000
vehicles, which include lawn movers, heavy-duty vehicles,
light duty vehicles, etc.
For more effective management and control, the
department is considering out-sourcing this function.
MECHANICAL WORKSHOP
Day-to-day management and maintenance of water
pump stations, sewage pump stations and mechanical equipment
remain the responsibility of the Electrical department.
There is also an opportunity for this function to be
out-sourced for more productive and cost effective management.
OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY
Due to enormous responsibility in terms of
legislation, this department take this issue very seriously

By now, most new year’s resolutions have been
well and truly broken - but one that’s worth reviving is a
plan to cut the costs of running your home.
The costs of municipal services such as electricity and water
are increasing rapidly, and they are a major factor in most
monthly household budgets today. But fortunately new
technology and common sense can help cut these essential
costs.
Consistent efforts to cut down on household expenses can
deliver significant cumulative savings over a year or two.
For example, if your home has a shower, use it and encourage
your children to use it whenever possible instead of taking a
bath. A shower uses considerably less water than a bath. In
addition, modern low-flow shower heads and taps can cut water
usage even more, particularly when rinsing vegetables and
dishes, or cleaning your teeth.
Other cost saving measures include:
* Checking the thermostat on the geyser, which in
most cases can be turned down a couple of degrees, resulting
in a constant saving of electricity.
* Ensuring that the geyser
and hot water pipes
are lagged to prevent heat
loss and turning the geyser off when you leave the house for
any length of time.
* Using cold water washing machine cycles whenever possible,
and using the machine – and the dishwasher – only when you
have a full load.
* Replacing burnt out light bulbs with new, energy-efficient
mini-fluorescents. These cost more initially, but they have a
longer life and use only 20 percent of the power of
conventional bulbs
* Placing your appliances carefully. Fridges,
freezers and air conditioning units will consume much more
electricity if they are sitting in the full glare of the
African sun.
* Drawing curtains to prevent heat loss in winter and heat
entry in summer.
* Cultivating good housekeeping habits like turning off lights
when you leave a room and replacing leaking tap washers
immediately.
And finally, you should seriously consider spending some of
your savings on better insulation – in the ceiling space and
under carpets – to lower heating costs in winter and cooling
costs in summer, and so generate even more savings.

A disaster that strikes when a homebuyer has taken occupation of a
property ahead of the registration of transfer could turn into
a nightmare for both seller and buyer.
The question is, who is liable for the cost of repairs if, for
example, an undetected slow leak in a geyser causes a ceiling
collapse and water damage to interior paintwork, carpets and
furniture?
The answer, should be that the costs will be covered by the
insurance on the house – but that will only be the case if
the seller has kept up his home owner’s insurance premiums
to ensure that the property is covered until the date of
transfer, or if the buyer has taken out a new policy effective
from the date of on which he took occupation.
It is thus essential for both buyer and seller to be
absolutely certain in any property transaction about the date
on which the “risk” passes to the new owner. If the risk
is to pass to the buyer only once the transfer of ownership is
registered, the seller must actually have enough insurance
until then to cover the total replacement of the building,
even though he no longer lives there.
If, on the other hand, the sale agreement stipulates that the
risk in the property passes to the buyer on occupation, he
must specifically insure against disaster from that date - or
he could find himself having to pay for rebuilding or repairs
to a house that he doesn’t yet own.
In general, it is a good idea to allow the risk in the
property to pass from the seller to the buyer on transfer of
the property, and not on occupation - and to double check that
this is written into the agreement of sale.
Such an arrangement means the careful seller will stay fully
insured until transfer, and that there will be no need for the
buyer to take out special insurance.
It also avoids the confusion that can arise over the fact that
there is usually risk insurance attached to the buyer’s new
home loan, but that this does not become effective until
transfer.
