The National Pro Wakeboarding Tour kicked off on 9 December at the Vaal River Boating Club, there were lots to see for the whole family and there was never a dull moment. Little Miss Pro Tour took place and they all looked like real little princesses, there was also a boat show for the not so faint at heart and an off road cycle race was held to entertain all cycling fanatics. Live entertainment kept the crowd going and there was even entertainment for the kiddies. Let's leave it at that, there was definitely a stir when the “Blue Bulls Babes” arrived and they were so soft on the eyes that even the old ticker could handle it. The weekend ended on a high note on 10 December when the National Pro Wakeboarding competition was held and when Miss Pro Tour Teen, winner Chanté Jantjes and Miss Pro Tour, Jeannie du Randt was chosen. TOP 10 NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS TO BOAST YOUR YEAR 1) Spend More Time with Family & Friends Recent polls conducted by General Nutrition Centers, Quicken, and others shows that more than 50% of Americans vow to appreciate loved ones and spend more time with family and friends this year. 2) Fit in Fitness The evidence is in for fitness. Regular exercise has been associated with more health benefits than anything else known to man. Studies show that it reduces the risk of some cancers, increases longevity, helps achieve and maintain weight loss, enhances mood, lowers blood pressure, and even improves arthritis. In short, exercise keeps you healthy and makes you look and feel better. 3) Tame the Bulge Fifty-five percent of adults in America are overweight, so it is not surprising to find that weight loss is one of the most popular New Year's resolutions. Setting reasonable goals and staying focused are the two most important factors in sticking with a weight loss program, and the key to success for those millions of Americans who made a New Year's commitment to shed extra pounds. 4) Quit Smoking If you have resolved to make this the year that you stamp out your smoking habit, over-the-counter availability of nicotine replacement therapy now provides easier access to proven quit-smoking aids. Even if you've tried to quit before and failed, don't let it get you down. On average, smokers try about four times before they quit for good. Start enjoying the rest of your smoke-free life! 5) Enjoy Life More Given the hectic, stressful lifestyles of millions of Americans, it is no wonder that "enjoying life more" has become a popular resolution in recent years. 6) Quit Drinking While many people use the New Year as an incentive to finally stop drinking, most are not equipped to make such a drastic lifestyle change all at once. Many heavy drinkers fail to quit cold turkey but do much better when they taper gradually, or even learn to moderate their drinking. If you have decided that you want to stop drinking, there is a world of help and support available. 7) Get Out of Debt Was money a big source of stress in your life last year? Join the millions of Americans who have resolved to spend this year getting a handle on their finances. It's a promise that will repay itself many times over in the year ahead. 8) Learn Something New Have you vowed to make this year the year to learn something new? Perhaps you are considering a career change, want to learn a new language, or just how to fix your computer? Whether you take a course or read a book, you'll find education to be one of the easiest, most motivating New Year's resolutions to keep. Challenge your mind in the coming year, and your horizons will expand. 9) Help Others A popular, non-selfish New Year's resolution, volunteerism can take many forms. Whether you choose to spend time helping out at your local library, mentoring a child, or building a house, these nonprofit volunteer organizations could really use your help. 10) Get Organized On just about every New Year resolution top ten list, organization can be a very reasonable goal. Whether you want your home organized enough that you can invite someone over on a whim, or your office organized enough that you can find the stapler when you need it, these tips and links should get you started on the way to a more organized life. Shave, Spray, Shave, Spray what will you do? Luscious locks, perfectly styled hair, coloured to perfection and often seen as our crowning glory. 3 March 2007 will be the day for celebrating baldness or colour-sprayed hair in the third annual Cansa Shavathon fundraising event happening in over 60 shopping centres across South Africa. Michelle Fagan of Figjam marketing, the event organiser, believes that the Shavathon is a well-known event and people in our country understand that by shaving or colour-spraying their heads for the event we show support and celebration of life for South African cancer survivors, and we remember our loved ones who have lost their lives to cancer. The participation donation of R50 will go to The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA). Shavathon is CANSA's biggest fundraiser which creates national awareness of the work CANSA does in communities throughout South Africa and what they are responsible for on a daily basis in communities across South Africa. CANSA Shavathon raises awareness of the disease which affects one in four South Africans. The funds raised are for prevention programmes and patient care services which will be used to further cancer research and provide home-based care for cancer patients. In a nutshell, cancer is the uncontrollable growth of cells, forming masses or tumours, and knows no boundaries between race, gender or age, making it impossible to exclude any individual from the possibility of being diagnosed with cancer. Whether you shave or spray all you need to do is participate in a shopping centre on 3 March 2007 or get your company registered to host your own event. The CANSA Shavathon certainly takes the bull by the horns by creating country-wide awareness of the disease, all while raising funds for The Cancer Association of South Africa. With statistics showing that 1 in 4 South Africans will be affected by cancer during his or her life time, the Shavathon certainly reaches out and aims to reduce these stats by creating national awareness and raises funds to expand prevention programmes and patient care services. On 3 March all South African's can participate at over 60 shopping venues for a R50 donation. Volunteers will shave the participants hair (all long ponytails are kept for the use in making of wigs for chemotherapy patients) or participants can have their hair spray coloured a colour of their choice. (The hair spray is made from vegetable dye allowing for easy removal after one wash) A list of the venues will be released next year. On 2 March corporate South Africa are going bald and colourful as corporates are invited to host their own Shavathon with their staff, clients and families. For further information or to register your company for the Shavathon simply email: Sandra@shoza.co.za or log onto www.shavesa.co.za. Business hours: Mon. to Thurs. 9h00 - 19h00 Fri. And Sat. 9h00 - 20h00 Sunday’s 10h00 - 17h00 On 6 December, a small truck managed to slow down enough not to hit a stalled vehicle, but unfortunately couldn't stop the drum it was carrying from being damaged in the process. This was the cause of a Sulphuric Acid spill that spread all over the left hand side of the N12 across from KFC last week. The road was closed immediately and the emergency workers had to wait until 21h00 before a Special emergency team arrived from Johannesburg to assist with the clean up of the chemical spill. Their cautious efforts of cleaning up the area by spotlight carried on late into the night. No one was injured during the spill and the road has since been reopened and is safe to travel on. Contribuiton towards Mabaso's triplets The First Lady's Charity Club is a non-government, non-profit making club established by women concerned with uplifting and lending a helping hand to the impoverished communities of Matlosana. The First Lady of Matlosana, Mrs. Happy Dodovu together with her team, launched the charity club on 11 November in an effort to introduce the club to the communities. The club inter-acted with, Ms Mabaso of Jouberton who has been blessed with triplets. Upon their visit to the home of Mabaso, her plight was to be assisted with a pram to enable her to carry all three of her daughters to the clinic. It was against this background that the First Ladies Charity Club has undertaken to assist by offering a helping hand in realization of the situation of Mabaso by contributing prams for the little girls. The other contribution that they were able to propose was from Doctor Khunou who has offered to give medical attention to the triplets should the need arise at no costs for a year. The Club also encourages business people and other organizations to donate and/or contribute towards the upbringing of these girls. Contributions or donations are not only limited to money only, but can be of any kind that will see through the triplet's health and nourishment. Currently the only means of income that enables Mabaso to buy the necessities for the triplet's is the child support grants she receives from the government. Reis veilig! MAFIKENG AIRPORT TO HOST INTERNATIONAL CIVIL AVIATION DAY Celebrations for the International Civil Aviation Day took place at Mafikeng Airport on 7 December. International Civil Aviation Day (ICAD) is an event initiated by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), which is celebrated all over the world to promote civil aviation among the general public. In terms of a resolution passed by ICAO, the 7th of December each year has been declared International Civil Aviation Day. The purpose of this annual celebration is to establish and reinforce worldwide awareness of the importance of international civil aviation in the social and economic development of States. For the past few years South Africa has been an active participant in this worthy event, and will continue to do so in the years to come. It is part of a government strategy to rotate the venue so that all provinces are afforded an opportunity to host the event, and the North West Provincial Government volunteered to host the 2006 event. Not only will this years event put North West Province on the map but it will also assist in promoting and marketing Mafikeng Airport, which is currently under-utilized, despite having state of the art facilities and the 6th longest runway in the world. However, Mr Rickie Rennie, the Manager of Mafikeng Airport, says the provincial governments plan for the airport is to optimise its usage, and it is events like these that will assist in putting the airport on the map. The Mafikeng Airport hosted a highly successful air show in October this year, which was voted the 3rd best air show in Southern Africa by Air Show South Africa (ASSA). This is an indication that our airport is one of the best, but we need to get more people to use it, says Mr Rennie. The event is being organised by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), in conjunction with the Department of Transport, the North West Provincial Government, Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS), the South African Airways (SAA), South African Air Force (SAAF) as well as the Aero Club of South Africa. Both the Minister of Transport Mr Jeff Hadebe and the North West Premier Ms Edna Molewa will attend the event. The theme for ICAD 2006 is: Safety and Security first is always the top priority. This is the theme that the Council of ICAO has approved as the theme for this years worldwide celebration of ICAD on 7 December 2006 and throughout the year 2007. The theme comes at the right time when the continents state of aviation safety and security is being questioned. It therefore provides an excellent opportunity for all the relevant stakeholders involved in civil aviation in SA to inform the flying public about what they are doing to raise and improve the levels of safety and security. The CAA, ACSA and ATNS all have plans in place to enhance the levels of aviation safety and security in South Africa. (See attached documents for detailed information on these plans). Although there are a number of agencies and organizations looking at improving aviation safety in this country, the overall responsibility for aviation safety and security oversight in South Africa lies with the South African Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). Mr Zakes Myeza, the Chief Executive Officer of the CAA, says aviation safety and security remains an important priority for all of us. With 2010 also approaching very fast, we need to assure South Africans, and the rest of the world, that South Africa will be able to deliver a safe aviation environment during that crucial FIFA Soccer World Cup event. We have to assure the world that we are ready to handle the anticipated increase in aviation activity effectively and efficiently, without compromising safety and security. Mr Myeza says the CAA is working very closely with the aviation industry to enhance safety in the country, as well as to encourage voluntary compliance. HEALTH WORKERS HONOURED FOR EXCELLENCE On 5 December , the health workers of the K/T/P/W Hospital Complex were awarded for their outstanding performances in the standard of care displayed within various private sectors. The purpose of this event, based on the Performance Management Development System for the period 2005 April to 2006 March, celebrated the Chief Director, Mr. M.A Senne's recognition of the health workers dedication and services. The criterion included amongst other things, the relationship with colleagues, subordinates, supervisors and clients, based on the principles of Batho Pele. Quality workmanship, highest score with a clean absenteeism record, COHSASA progress and standard maintenance. The occasion welcomed dignitaries such as the MEC for Health, Nomonde Rasmeni, Executive Mayor of Matlosana and the Deputy Director General for health services. Each month, the Klerksdorp / Tshepong /Potchefstroom / Witrand Hospital complex, provides outpatient services to approximately 13 000 patients, and emergency services to approximately 2 800 patients. Over the last year the Klerksdorp/Tshepong hospital has installed a 16 slice CT scanner and digital chest x-ray machine with NHLS look-up stations in the west wing. Occupational therapy introduced a stimulation professional for a 10-bedded mental health in-patient unit. MOPD Doctors have also implemented strict down referral practices, which has helped to decrease the patient numbers from approximately 180 to 120 per day. Juffrou Elize is `n beminde en toegewyde Graad 1 onderwyseres en honderde jong Samies se grondslagfase is deur haar gelê. Haar opregtheid, warmte en saggeaarde menswees, gaan beslis `n groot leemte, by veral die grondslagfase, laat.
