Presidential Imbizo a Success!

03 November not only marked the start of “International Day for No violence against Woman and Children”, but also a special visit by President Thabo Mbeki to Khuma.

Mbeki and other Premiers, Mayors, Ministers and MEC's, addressed and interacted with local members of the community during the Imbizo held at Khuma. The community were given a chance to raise their issues to the President and offer solutions. Many issues were brought to light by members of the community, such as Governments Promises that have not been kept, Housing, Sanitary, Transport  Roads and Water problems. Corruption in higher and local government and how it affects the citizens. The high cost for Municipal services. Police services not efficient and some being corrupt.  Unemployment in smaller rural areas. Woman and child abuse. Crisis in Alabama. Unjustified dismissals to name but a few.

The Premier, Edna Molewa and other ministers, in turn responded to questions raised and addresses the people on how they would approach these matters.

As President Mbeki spoke to the crowd, they listened in silence.  He thanked them for being there; he applauded our Mayor, China Dodovu with the initiative of AGENDA 16 and the involvement of the community. He assured the people that they were there to listen to them and not to speak, to listen to their advice and to hear how they saw things.

“Mbeki expressed his concern about woman and child abuse. He said that they did not fight for freedom so that they could abuse woman and children, but so that woman and children could lead a better life.” He closed off by saying, “That it does not matter in which town or city he sleeps tonight, because he would be sleeping in South Africa, and as we go away here today, we now know about the needs of the people and will reply by fixing and paying more attention to the matters raised” - By  Inge Olivier

Civil Union Bill in the hands of the NCOP

Gay and lesbian people may soon be able to marry under the current Marriage Act if Parliament does not meet the December 1 deadline set by the Constitutional Court to legalise same-sex unions. The National Assembly approved the Civil Union Bill with 230 votes for it compared with 41 against it.  However, the bill still needs to be reviewed by the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) before it is endorsed. They are expected to vote on the bill on Thursday this week. If the NCOP votes to legalise the bill it will be taken to President Thabo Mbeki to sign into law.

Melanie Judge, of OUT LGBT Well-being, says Parliament needs to set an example to give effect to the requirements of the highest court in the land. While welcoming the spirit of the bill, Judge says there are still some reservations about the bill that need urgent attention. For example, Section 6 of the bill states that civil marriage officers may object to marrying lesbian and gay people on the grounds of conscience.

“We have no objection to religious denominations only marrying people according to the dictates of their faith. We do, however, object strongly to allowing civil marriage officers to decide who they will marry or who they won't. This is particularly problematic when the basis for exercising conscience is limited to sexual orientation," Judge said.   Steve Swart, spokesperson for the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), says his party hopes the NCOP endorses the bill without referring to it as marriage. He says the bill is "sufficient" in being recognised only as a civil union in order "to preserve the traditions of marriage".

Newly refurbished coach to meet 2010 passenger demands

Transport Minister Jeff Radebe has unveiled a newly refurbished coach to enhance customer services ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup as well as to meet future passenger demands.  According to Mr Radebe, the revitalised 10M5 train would help address the ongoing overcrowding in trains and trip cancellations which often leaves commuters frustrated.

"This 10M5 coach is a milestone in the South African Rail Commuter Corporation (SARCC) coach upgrading programme. We cannot be complacent until our economy is aggressively driven by an overall competitive and sustainable public transport system," said Mr Radebe.

As part of meeting 2010 passenger needs, over the next three years, the department and Metrorail will renovate a further 1 600 operating coaches.

The minister said while he welcomed and acknowledged the rational behind standardising trains into 10M4s and 10M5s, there was a need to look into the future beyond 2010. Metrorail CEO Lucky Montana said they were aware of the challenges of safety, security, and passenger comfort.  "The 10M5 coach will address the issues of safety, comfort and sustainability as its life span runs into 30 year and more," said Mr Montana. Speaking on behalf of the Tshwane Regional Commuter Forum, Thabo Morukhuladi said they welcomed any initiative to improve service delivery in terms of rail transport. He also appealed to government to make public transport more effective and reliable.  "As commuters we want simple things such as safety, comfort, reliability and trains that are always on time," said Mr Morukhuladi. – BuaNews

ABSA warns of latest ATM scam

ABSA has quashed claims by a circulating e-mail indicating that ATM users can type their pin numbers in reverse to alert police of suspicious people waiting to rob them of their cash. ABSA spokesperson Errol Smith said the circulating e-mail was incorrect and disappointing.

"We have become aware that there's a circulating e-mail claiming that if ATM users type in their pin in reverse the police would come and assist them at a specific ATM," he said in a statement on 28 November. "We want to warn our customers that this ATM pin reversal functionality does not exist at ABSA  ATMs. By entering your pin number in reverse you will not notify the police in anyway, nor will cash be dispensed from ATMs."

According to the e-mail, when ATM users suspect any unbecoming behaviour, they can simply use their pins in reverse and still get their cash knowing that help is on its way. But Smith warns that doing so could result in the ATM refusing the transaction or a restrictive hold being placed on the account holder's card.

"If a pin number is entered in reverse, the ATM will decline the transaction and display the error message: Invalid pin entered." He also refuted claims by the e-mail that this pin information was broadcast on TV.  "ABSA has no knowledge of such a broadcast which informed people that the pin function was seldom used because people did not know it existed."  The bank was investigating the origins of the e-mail.

Unite Against Crime

It was a jam-packed weekend, starting off Friday evening with Hospice and Chil Band, joined by friends, families and supporters, singing carols by candlelight.  They all united to pay tribute to family and friends whom they had lost during the year with the symbolic releasing of brightly coloured balloons and heartfelt messages tied to them. Saturday started off with a March against Crime and ended off with a lovely display of fireworks. The message of Unite against Crime was certainly acknowledged and supported by the people of Klerksdorp and with that message in place  a 16-day crime free 'City of People', will be … By  Inge Olivier

Skills needed to address water issues

Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry Minister Lindiwe Hendricks says appropriate skills and reliable information are needed to support decisions made on water resources.   Dysfunctional information systems or systems that were in a state of disrepair limited informed decision making processes, Ms Hendricks said recently at the opening of the 4th Tiger workshop. The workshop is looking into ways of using space technology to manage Africa's water resources.Minister Hendricks explained that the availability of adequate water was crucial for good health, economic development and growth, poverty eradication and national empowerment, all of which pertained to the entire continent."It is therefore logical for all of us to take advantage of various initiatives that are aimed at addressing some of these needs." Minister Hendricks quoted the 2006 United Nations Human Development Report, which found that the water crisis facing the globe was not as a result of scarcity, but of poverty, power and inequality."The report states that 1.2 billion people across the globe are without access to safe water, that high infant mortality rates are directly attributed to lack of access to safe water, with up to 1.8 million child deaths being directly related to unclean water."  The report argued that providing water and sanitation gave people dignity and offered them the opportunity "to lead a healthy, dignified and productive life."According to the report, said the minister, current levels of technology allowed complex research such as exploring the possibilities of life on another other planet, while "on our own planet there is still so much suffering."  "However, it is this very technology that can provide some of the solutions to the water challenges that face us," the minister said. – BuaNews

Heinz woo the crowd in Potchefstroom

Carols by candle light with a bit of oomph, musical beat and great support can chase away any rainstorm.

On the eve of 23 November people from near and far joined Heinz Winkler, OFM radio station, the BCC Serenade's and Spar at the annual carols by candlelight held in Potch. Entrance fee was “a gift for a child” which will be distributed to various organisations, homes for the homeless and other less fortunate children over the Christmas period.

Heinz inspired the vast crowd to keep the chills out by reminding them how it was to be 5 again and join in the singing of Jingle bells with an African rock beat.  He ended the sensational evening off with the breath taking carol  “Silent night  Stille nag”.
