Your Money, Your future, Your Life If you want to achieve your goals, avoid the debt trap and enjoy a stress-free, satisfying life. You must learn to budget. You probably have short-term goals, such as buying a new car in 2006, medium-term goals, such as building an extension to your house in five years time, long-term goals, such as providing good education for your children. These things don’t happen by themselves. You need to make them happen – and for this you need to budget. Draw up a budget A budget is a written plan in which you set out what money is coming in and going out. It allows you to see what you’re spending your money on. When planning a budget, involve the whole family. Children are less likely to make unrealistic demands if they understand that your purse is not bottomless. Divide a page down the middle. On the left hand side list your household income after deductions – salary, rent from a lodger, etc. On the right, list you monthly expenditure. Divide this into fixed expenses, such as bond payments and insurance premiums, essential, variable expenses, such as electricity and food and optional expenses, such as holidays. If your expenditure is higher than your income you can soon be in trouble. Cutting Down If your short fall is small, making shorter phone calls and cutting out necessary car journeys should save you enough to bring you within your budget. Buy only if you can afford to pay cash and settle credit cards in full at the end of the month. Review your budget regularly to access your budget.
