SMART LIFESTYLE CHOICES CAN ADD YEARS TO YOUR LIFE CANSA's 2005 Toktokkie campaign kicks off nationally in February and March but this year sees trained Toktokkie volunteers visiting homes, businesses and schools, delivering a smart new message in line with CANSA's recent repositioning: “Smart lifestyle choices can add years to your life.” Cancer affects all race groups, genders and ages. Healthy lifestyle choices such as making healthy eating a habit, exercising regularly, not smoking, being SunSmart, regular self-examination and testing by health professionals can greatly reduce your chances of getting cancer. Early detection significantly increases the chances of effective treatment. “In South Africa 1 in 4 South Africans may become a cancer statistic in their lifetime. Between 2000 and 2020 an increase of 29% is predicted in the total number of cancer cases in the developing world,” said CANSA CEO, Niamaat Gamildien. Gamildien added that Toktokkie is one of CANSA's key awareness and fundraising campaigns: raising awareness of the prevention of cancer; the importance of choosing a healthy lifestyle; as well as informing the public of our services. “This campaign has been running for the past 27 years and in 2004 we are introducing a new re-developed Toktokkie character to assist in delivering health messages to the public,” she said. The re-designed friendly beetle character is colourful, full of fun and will help to bring across a positive healthy lifestyle message. In addition to CANSA's on-going research programme the organisation offers a large variety of community-based services such as the facilitation of patient care, a toll-free information service, counselling, day-care centres, interim homes and volunteer services. The generous donations received during the annual Toktokkie campaign are used to fund these invaluable services and provide much needed health promotion and education programmes to everyone in South Africa. Support Toktokkie and support CANSA. It's the smart thing to do. For more information on the campaign, call CANSA at 018-484-4299 or 018-484-3993. |
