REHABILITATION IS A SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

“Rehabilitation of offenders is not the sole responsibility of the Department of Correctional Services; the society also has a major role to play in changing the lives of the inmates for the better.”

This was said by the Area Commissioner of Klerksdorp Correctional Services, Dineo Ratshikana, on the 9th August, at Brazil Stadium. The event was organised by joint community forums (Correctional Services and SAPS). In her opening remarks she paid tribute to both men and women who contributed to the struggle and the emancipation of women world-wide, particularly in South Africa. She further encouraged women to stand up and participate in projects that will improve the lives of their people.

Ratshikana informed members of the community that they have a "significant role" to play in the re- integration of inmates into the society. She said that the Department of Correctional Services has put rehabilitation at the centre of every activity and that this exercise would be futile without community involvement.

The Commissioner raised her concern about the increasing number of children in prison and said it is an indication that there is something wrong within the society which requires  urgent intervention.

”Children are future leaders and as parents, teachers and community leaders we have to invest in them.” It is therefore important for all stakeholders to protect our children from all evil.

“Offenders are members of society. These are our brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers and partners, irrespective of the time they spent in prison, they will still come back to their various communities," she said.

She indicated that rehabilitation programmes are being designed in such a way that they fit an individual offender, as well as the offending behaviour. She, once again, made a passionate plea, to the unemployed graduates to come and contribute to the development of inmates. The event was well attended by the local residents who were also entertained by choirs and cultural music groups. Those invited included Non Governmental Organisations like SANGALA, HIV/AIDS Support Groups and other Community based organisations.
