No longer Northwest Cricket Stadium

Potchefstroom – The Northwest Cricket Stadium received a new name and new sponsors last week. Mickey Gordon, President of the Northwest Cricket Association, announced the new sponsorship of the Northwest Cricket Stadium on Thursday 2 September 2004.

In the 2002/2003 season the Northwest Stadium/Sedgars Park was rated the best pitch, best outfield and best conditions. It was the first time ever that one stadium received all these accolades.

Following MTN withdrawn sponsorship, which will end at the end of the year forced the stadium to look for alternative means of funding. Selling the naming rights ensured that club cricket will be sustainable even in areas as far as Vryburg. Even with the selling of the naming rights, there will still be a short fall to keep current programs running.

They are still engaging with various parties and sponsors to see if this short fall can’t be overcome. With the Sedgars Group buying the naming rights, the stadium will now be called Sedgars Park and no longer Northwest Cricket Stadium.

Sedgars have been in business for 22 years and the managers which are the 3 brothers, Zaid Docrad, Mohammad Docrad and Suliman Docrad, along with their mother. The main building of Sedgars is situated in Vereeniging, with branches in Vaderbijlpark, Welkom, East London and the East Rand.

“Although I would not like to spread the gospel that cricket is totally free, we have a moral obligation of taking the game to the people,” Gordon, president of the Northwest Cricket Association, commented. Developing the rural areas is a high priority for them and they have already set out objectives to accomplish just that.

“My sincere thanks to the Sedgars Group for coming on board with us, you are serving cricket with distinction,” Gordon concluded. It is our moral obligation to make cricket accessible to all communities and to enable anyone who would like to play the game of cricket the opportunity.

Kosh Sport Trauma Dienste
