Born in Brussels as the daughter of a South African diplomat, Karen grew up in Belgium and Johannesburg where she became a teenage busker, honing her songwriting, guitar playing and singing skills on the streets of Melville.
In June 2001 EMI released Zoid's first solo album, Poles Apart, which fired the imagination of both critics and the public to such an extent that Karen Zoid became an icon of the South African youth, which the press renamed the Zoid Generation. In 2004 both Time Magazine and US News & World Report highlighted her role as an icon.
In June 2003 EMI released her second critically acclaimed album, Chasing the Sun.
Her work has subsequently been included on many albums of other artists as well as compilations and she receives daily fan mail from all over the world.
Touring the country and often headlining major festivals, she is supported by her accomplished band members Don Reinecke on lead guitar, Llewellyn John on bass and Etienne Oosthuysen on drums and percussion.
Karen Zoid is the first South African Female Artist to be sponsored by Levi's. Don’t miss Karen at Aardklop during the week. BALLOON RELEASING PROJECT IN AID OF CANSA
Wilmed Park Oncology is the only Cancer treatment facility in the Northwest Province and Northern Free State.
All patients from this large district are referred to the oncology unit in Klerksdorp for their chemo and radiation treatment. Because radiation is administered over a period of around 6 weeks, it is very costly, and patients are forced to remain in Klerksdorp for the duration of their treatment.
A few are able to find accommodation with friends of the oncology unit but many are forced to make temporary home in expensive guest houses.
We are delighted to announce that the Cancer Association of SA (Cansa) has agreed in principle to run and administer an Interim Home in Klerksdorp for these patients, and also patients who need to have treatment at the Provincial Hospital in Klerksdorp.
Cansa already received a donation in the form of undeveloped stands in Klerksdorp, and now needs to develop it for an Interim Home.
Wilmed Park Oncology and Pick ‘n Pay Hypermarket set a target of R50 000 by releasing 5000 balloons at the Klerksdorp Pick ‘n Pay Hypermarket in Wilkoppies on the 27th of November 2004.
The idea behind this project is not only raising much needed funds for building this Interim Home with Cansa, but also to give people the chance to release a past hurt or traumatic experience that is keeping them from moving forward in healing. You can even salute life for today, or someone you Love!
Inserting messages into the balloons and releasing them will be a strong symbolic process whereby people can free themselves from past traumatic experiences.
Buy a balloon, insert a positive message and contribute to helping other not so fortunate people!
Balloons are sold for R10 each, and can be bought at Pick ‘n Pay Hypermarket on Saturday 27 November 2004 at the doors, or everyday from 6 September 2004 at Wilmed Park Oncology.
This will be a fun filled event with entertainment! People that are interested in taking part in the festivities, or if you would like to make a donation towards this worthy cause, can contact Charmaine at (018) 4681420.
