SA ‘A’ score convincing win over New Zealand ‘A’

An unbeaten second-wicket partnership of 121 between Morne van Wyk and Neil McKenzie ensured that South Africa 'A' recorded a nine wicket victory over their New Zealand counterparts.

The result though not a foregone conclusion was on the cards from the instant Ashwell Prince won the toss and invited the visitors to take first strike.

The pace attack of Garnett Kruger, Charl Willoughby, Andrew Hall, Justin Kemp and Albie Morkel rose magnificently to the challenge bowling the Kiwis out for a miserly 125. Despite the early loss of Hall, edging the last ball of the first over to the keeper, Van Wyk and McKenzie made steady progress in knocking off the runs with 24.4 overs to spare.

McKenzie was the first to reach his 50 - his 26th limited overs half century - struck off 70-balls that included eight boundaries and a huge six launched in front of square on the leg-side.

Van Wyks' 14th limited over 50 came off 65 deliveries with eight fours. When the players walked of the park Van Wyk and McKenzie were on 59 and 57 respectively.  Earlier the New Zealanders' hopes of squaring the series were scuppered when the top five failed to come to terms with the track that initially offered something to the bowler who was prepared to bend his back.

Similarly, if a batsman was prepared to apply himself he would receive his reward. James Franklin was one such man, striking an undefeated 53-ball 36 which also featured a record tenth wicket partnership of 32 with Richard Sherlock.

However, the writing was on the wall from the outset when Matthew Bell was trapped in front by Charl Willoughby for a duck with the first-ball of the second over. There were to be four more leg-before decisions against the visitors, resulting in only five Kiwi batsmen getting into double figures.

The pick of the South African ‘A’ bowlers were Kemp and Willoughby with 3/18 and 3/35 respectively.
