A DREAM COME TRUE?

By Johan Marais

James Lennox is a jovial 10-year-old boy with a sense of humour. He shares the same aspirations as his peers. With excitement he recounts having enjoyed a cricket match on Sunday and shyly admits to possibly spending too much time playing video games.

Seriously handicapped by cerebral palsy, this youngster has surprised those close to him with his fervour for life. He will be involved in a home school program from the start of next year. Julia is his loving and proficient caregiver and has been with the family for 16 years. She assists in giving him his essential therapy each day.

It is James' dream to have an electric wheelchair of his own, specially adapted to suit his restricted physical capability. This is the only possible likelihood of his ever moving about on his own. His parents, James and Marita, have established the enormous cost of such an acquisition. At the school he attended until recently young James even wanted to take the initiative to organise a cake sale towards achieving this goal, indicating his remarkable sense of perseverance and determination.

Rina van der Merwe of Perfumed Gardens has organised a Persian Carpet Auction evening. This event takes place at Fountain Villa on Thursday 17 November at 18:00. Admission will be R40 per person and will include a typical Middle East meal. Ebrahim Ravat, a specialist and connoisseur of Persian carpets and member of the International Board of Evaluators, will present an educational talk. Part of the proceeds from carpet sales will be contributed to the fund intended for the purchasing of an electric wheelchair for James.

Inquiries can be directed to Rina at 082 771 5496 and Marita at 082 826 8011.

ABI Child Welfare Golf Day

ABI, in association with Child Welfare South Africa: Stilfontein, hosts a golf day on 28 October, at the Stilfontein Golf Club.  Everyone is invited to grab their golf clubs, and come and join in this day, which is organized in aid of Child Welfare.

“ABI feels privileged to be in a position to be able to reach out to organisations which promote the social well-being of our society.  The Stilfontein branch of Child Welfare has done a lot this year, in alleviating the needs and pressures that rest on victims of domestic violence, HIV and Aids”, says Werner Faul of ABI, “which is why this golf day is all the more special to us”.

The golf day will take on the format of a 2-ball American Scramble, in order to allow for even the most inexperienced player, like the treasurer of CWSAS for instance, to participate in the game!

It will cost R60-00 per player, and several prizes are up for the grab. For more information on this Golf Day, contact Werner Faul on (018) 469 1391.
