KOPANANG MINE HITS THE MILLION!

Saturday 5 November marked a memorable day in the life of Kopanang mine. They achieved one million fatality-free shifts.

It took approximately 5 000 underground employees 8 months and 11 days to achieve, and is the 5th time in the last 6 years that Kopanang has reached millionaire status.

A recent spate of seismic activity in the area has made this milestone even more commendable. Frik Fourie, general manager of Kopanang mine, is particularly proud of this as it is his second 'million' as general manager.

At a celebratory function on Monday 7 November, Frik gratefully thanked all persons working at Kopanang mine for their hard and dedicated efforts in making this achievement possible.

He felt the 'million' was achieved through creating a safe and healthy environment for all to work in and further stressed that this was the halfway mark to their ultimate goal of achieving 2 million fatality-free shifts. He asked all to remain focused so that Kopanang mine could end 2005 without any loss of life so that each and every employee could enjoy Christmas with their families.

The 2 million fatality-free shift challenge has only been achieved once before at Kopanang on 15 November 2001 and they hope to reach their 2nd million at the beginning of July 2006.

Frik said that 'kopanang' is a Sotho word for 'people coming together in the work place' and Kopanang employees have certainly been true to their name, as only people working together could achieve one million fatality-free shifts.

Annual CANSA “shav-a-thon”

On Saturday, Flamwood Walk hosted the CANSA shav-a-thon.  They raised over R9000 and 211 heads were shaved or sprayed.  Various motorcycle clubs in and around Klerksdorp also showed their support, with over 100 motorcyclists showing up.  It is truly heart warming to see how the community can show their support.  We thank you!!!
