The Circus Visits Western Reef Primary School

By Cairalee du Preez

Western Reef Primary School hosted the Mama Mia travelling circus this weekend, as a kick-start to the school year.

On both Friday and Saturday evenings, the Spanish speaking Mama Mia Circus brought joy to the children of Western Reef Primary School.  This ambitious and developing school welcomed the circus tent, along with its sights and sounds of marvel.  The teachers put a lot of effort into hosting this occasion, and their hard work was fruitful.  This family circus was great entertainment, with many aspects of humour, magic and captivating stunts.  The children were excited as the clowns called on them to dance and yell to their hearts' content.  There was a variety of magical jokes and slapstick humour, and the scholars were all too happy to participate.  The parents also enjoyed themselves, as they were impressed with the knife-throwing, snake-charming men, lying on a bed of nails, and the motor cycles in the Globe of Death had many on the edge of their seats.  It was a show enjoyed by all present.  An expression of school spirit, especially as the EMS teacher, Mr Rossiter, very boldly took on Bambino the Clown in a humorously heated session of karate.

Employee’s Strike

The Matlosana City Council apologises to all members of the public who were inconvenienced on Monday, 16 January, due to employees of the finance department engaging in an unprotected strike.  We would like to assure the public that the city council will do everything in its power to guard against such misfortunes from re-occurring.

We also plead with our employees, that instead of engaging in illegal actions, they should utilize the dispute resolution mechanisms, made available to them through the conditions of service, the organisational rights agreement and all other labour legislations and institutions like the CCMA, who regulate labour disputes.

We assure the public and employees that the SAPS were called in only as a backup, in case some people might have taken advantage of the situation.  In this regard, we had to protect, to avoid past experiences of robberies.  There was not, at any stage, danger to the public, or the employees posing any threat to the public or the municipal assets.  The city management had the situation under control at all times, but will be more vigilant and responsive to the employees' challenges, to avert any such mishap.
