EXPLOSION CUTS OUT HALF OF KLERKSDORP’S POWER

“The Electrical Department performed excellently,” says Wynand Viljoen, Manager of the Electrical Engineering Services. After the explosion in one of the panel's in the electric sub-station, the teams worked miraculously to have the city's electricity back within four and a half hours.

On Tuesday the 7th February at quarter to two in the afternoon, one of the panels in the sub-station blew, causing all of the central and southern parts of Klerksdorp's electricity to be cut off. Wynand Viljoen said they assume that the cause was in the Busbar sections, which are the conductors.

Ten years ago almost to the day, 14th February to be exact, was the last time something similar happened at our Electrical Department.

It was really brilliant how the station handled the crisis. “Good planning, good organisation and good team work” Wynand says was the key to this operation's success. The need of electricity was prioritised and places like the hospitals, water pump stations, the Fire Department, etc. were dealt with first, then the Central business district. This is their very effective crisis management plan.   After the electricity was restored within four and a half hours, three teams worked tirelessly through the night to clean the whole sub-station and gain stability. There is still a hint of uncertainty, but all should be stable before four days time.

The entire city's electricity is now flowing through half the capacity it normally goes through. That is 11 400 amps going through half the usual sub-station.  The chilled and rainy weather is actually a blessing at this time now, because it is keeping the transformers cool. If it were hot, the transformers would over heat, causing more problems.

However, the electricity supply of the mid and southern parts of Klerksdorp is under control, with the very efficient and hard working team at the Electrical Department constantly monitoring the situation.
