MORE SPORTS FACILITIES IN 2006

Following on the successful launch of its Dirt Is Good campaign in 2005, OMO is supporting the Department of Education's (DoE) initiative to create more sporting facilities for primary schools in South Africa. It is reported that 90 percent of schools in SA do not have proper sporting facilities, and as a result, Physical Training (PT) does not form part of the basic curriculum.

The DoE is committed to addressing this problem by year-end 2007, ensuring that not only are formalised sports grounds implemented, but that teachers are also equipped with the necessary skills to coach sport and encourage free-play among learners. The OMO project, which is a competition, gives the DoE's plans a head start and sees 10 primary schools receiving OMO-sponsored playgrounds, valued at over R1million this year. It is hoped that, through the Dirt is Good campaign, OMO will mobilise parents and communities, and get them to truly understand the value that sports and play bring to a child's social, physical and emotional development, as well as the importance of these vital learning areas being included in the standard educational programme.

Unilever Public Affairs manager, Ethne Whitley says, “Through the competition and the Dirt is Good campaign we are affirming our responsibility to formal and informal education in this country, and the consequent holistic development of our youth.” To promote the competition, OMO has already invited primary schools nationwide to participate and looks forward to a flood of entries, particularly from the most needy institutions, over the coming months.

To enter, parents of primary school-going children need to cut or tear off the top lid flaps from as many OMO washing powder boxes as possible, and send them to school with their children. These flaps may be from any OMO washing powder box, as there is no special entry pack. Children need to hand in all their flaps to a designated representative at their schools between now and May 31, 2006, which is the closing date for this competition. Primary schools then need to collect their flaps, and the schools with the most flaps per learner will win themselves an OMO Dirt is Good sports facility, worth R100 000, to be built during the course of 2006.

OUTCRY ANSWERED

An outcry for help from Thembalani Projects towards Klerksdorp Rotary Club, was recently answered. Thembalani Projects, an organization which sees to the needs of HIV/AIDS orphans, has done a presentation to Rotary Club in which they explained how their work is challenged by lack of finances, the cost of water and electricity and the expense of food for the children.

They also noted the difficulties in communication between themselves and their field members. Nashua Mobile has answered the latter need and sponsored Thembalani Projects with 6 cell phones and air time. Anonymous members from Rotary Club will sponsor airtime for these phones. Furthermore, the City Council has agreed that Thembalani Projects will not need to pay for water and electricity any more.

Executive Mayor, PJ Nxamakele who also attended the handing-over of the sponsorships, said that he would like to congratulate Klerksdorp Rotary Club on alerting the council to this challenge, and that they always react to community needs in this regard.
