Safety Focus Month

The safety focus month was launched by the MEC for Safety and Liaison in the North West Province Mrs. Maureen Modiselle, on Tuesday 1 February  2005 in Potchestroom.

This is a continuation of what was declared by the President in his state of the Nation address of 2002, when he rallied the citizenry of South Africa to wake up and to form themselves under the banner and spirit of VUK”ZENZELE which calls on all the people to volunteer in all services of government for the better life for all. The Department of Safety and Security is not an exception to this call.

In her speech the MEC indicated that the launch of this focus month is intended to stimulate and revive this spirit to create and support conditions of peace and stability in our Province.

This year the campaign is even more significant in the history of our country because it signals the start of the second decade of our democracy and precedes the celebration of 50th anniversary of the Freedom Charter and also launches the 10th anniversary celebrations of the establishment of the South African Police Services in the Province. All our efforts this year must be in the tandem with, and guided by the ten principles of the Freedom Charter, and the vision of our masses.

From time to time, we need to reflect on this historic congress of the people, which was held 50 years ago. She further indicated we need to asses how far have gone in terms of achieving the principles of ” THERE SHALL BE HOUSES, SECURITY AND COMFORT FOR ALL”.

The purpose of the Letsema programme this year within the Department of Safety and Security in our Province, is to raise awareness of the importance of community participation in the fight against crime.

We further want to encourage the people of this Province to continue assisting the Police in the fight against crime by joining the Community Policing Forums.

We further want to acknowledge the contributions made by the Police, CPF’S, reservists and members of the community in general in the fight against crime as we move into the second decade of Freedom and Democracy.

In outlining the programme which will last for the whole month of February and beyond the Honorable MEC indicated that:

Firstly, in our drive to reduce contact crimes, which include rape and violence against women and children, we will be conducting workshops on Anti-rape strategy in the three policing areas.

The objective of these workshops is to popularize the Anti-rape initiatives and the SAPS implementation plan. Linked to these workshops, we will rally our people to assist in the cleaning and clearing of the rape-hotspot areas in our neighbourhoods.

And since violence against women and children has been identified as one of the priority crimes in the Province we want to make sure that we do not wait until the 16 Days of Activism campaign, but the campaign must continue for the entire year until this scourge is eradicated.

Secondly, as an ongoing programme to eradicate the use of drugs, substance and abuse of alcohol especially among young people, we will conduct workshops in schools in the four district of our Province.

The objectives of the workshops are as follows:

To raise awareness about the dangers of drugs, substance and alcohol abuse.

To encourage the affected youth to talk about drugs and substance abuse as a step to rehabilitation.

To distribute information that would help young people to avoid drugs.

Thirdly, we will have an award ceremony to recognize the heroic roles played by the volunteers and members of the Police in the fight against crime. We will be giving credit to our people who have done outstanding work since their efforts have shown that together, if each one of us lends a hand, we can do much better.Parallel to all these activities the Police will be carrying different operations throughout the month to combat and prevent criminal activities. The Police operations will involve roadblocks and cordons off’s, searches and seizures.

She concluded by saying that at the end of this campaign we will have consolidated and enhanced the relationship between the Police and the communities that they serve.

As our Motto, together we must create partnerships against crime.

Pitt Denies Florio Fling

Brad Pitt and sexy model April Florio have both denied a magazine's claim that they are enjoying a secret romance.

The Ocean's Twelve hunk, who split from wife Jennifer Aniston last month, claims the girl photographed with him on Los Angeles' Venice Beach by In Touch magazine is his assistant--and he is not the man pictured with Florio in Greece, reports the New York Daily News.

Florio has meanwhile told rival publication Us Weekly, "I've never even met him."

In Touch's editors argue Florio's agent Mike Esterman confirmed in an email, "She was with him and wanted it to be on the low down," but he now states he was referring to another man, not Pitt. He says his client wanted to keep things under wraps because, "She's married."

Orlando and Kate

Orlando Bloom and Kate Bosworth have sparked speculation they are back together.

The couple have been spotted kissing over a romantic candlelit dinner just a week after Kate dumped the handsome actor for reportedly spending too much time with his male friends.

An onlooker at the swanky Hollywood Chateaux Marmont restaurant said: "They looked pretty besotted with each other."

Last week, the screen beauty told friends she had become fed-up with Orlando's out-of-control behaviour and admitted the final straw came after he spent a debauched night out with British actor Sean Bean.
