A Move Towards Economic Growth

By Lisa Rivett

With the eventual closing of the DRD gold mine in Stilfontein, there has been much speculation about the future of the KOSH region economy. Klerksdorp Mayor, Jaycee Nxamakele, wants to assure residents that this area will not become a, “ghost town”. He says that the city has teamed up with the Commonwealth to examine the problem.

Mayor Nxamakele believes the community of Klerksdorp must think beyond the mining industry. He stated that it is important to consider other options for economic growth.

A local task force has been set up to draft a strategic plan for community economic regeneration. The idea behind this task force will be to explore opportunities found in other industries that will provide employment for area residents. The Mayor stated that it would be a “consultative process”, which will be considering long-term economic plans for the region.

Strategists from Mansfield England will be teamed up with the local task force. The Mayor explained the importance of this relationship is due to the fact that Mansfield is proof of a successful economic regeneration program. Mansfield is a city that once held mining as its major industry. After developing a successful economic regeneration plan, the city now employs more people than when the mine was operating.

The two groups will be working together on a business plan that will determine how to use existing assets from closed mines in the KOSH area. By using assets already in place, new projects will not have to start from scratch. This can result in job creation that initially costs less.

Once an approved business plan has been set up, the local government will fund the new projects. The underlying theme of the economic regeneration task force will be to create new jobs, and build a “shining future” for our community.

Stilfontein Housing

By Lisa Rivett

The people of Stilfontein who were displaced after the earthquake on March 22 may be waiting for a long time before their housing situation is settled.

Civil engineers continue to assess damages caused by the earthquake. Many residents must try and be patient while officials decide whether it will be the government or private insurance companies who will rebuild their homes.

Various task teams have been established to address the problem. Housing task team leader, Mike Khaoue, stated that his team is busy drafting a proposal for housing subsidies. The proposal will investigate the possibility of building affordable housing for those who have been displaced. Mr. Khaoue explained that unfortunately they must wait for other groups before government will make a final decision on the proposal.

The task force is waiting for reports from District Council and private insurance companies. The Council's report should clarify if the earthquake was a result of mining activity.

After this report is finalized, the private insurance companies will file their reports. Unfortunately this may take quite some time and the housing task force cannot proceed with their proposal until these reports are issued.

Displaced residents who still have questions can report to the Office for Economic Affairs and Corporate Information in Stilfontein. Sandy Botha, who works in the Economic Affairs office, says they are mostly handling people with insurance questions, but the office will do its best to help wherever they can.

For other people wishing to help a disaster relief fund has been established with local banks. Contact Standard Bank for more information.
