KLERKSDORP GETS NATIONAL F1 GRAND PRIX DATE IN APRIL 8TH ROUND TO TAKE PLACE IN THE NORTH-WEST

The Kwik-fit Klerksdorp Water Festival taking place in the North-West on 16 & 17 April will see a host of action both on and off the water at the Klerksdorp Dam which is now being run by the community in conjunction with Powerboat SA for the benefit of the local community.

Now taking place for the fourth successive year, the Water Festival committee comprises of several local businesses and is headed by Elmarie Fuhri of Kwik-fit, with the support of the local Klerksdorp Municipality. The main sponsors on board for the 2005 event include Bosch, Autozone, the Klerksdorp City Council,  Kwik-fit and Bosal.

Further support has come from Auto Supreme, Agenbag Group, Oranje Toyota, Cedar Vadec, Robinson Ford, Canopy Land, Delta, Adreo Power Sport, Audi, WesBank, Danlou Marine, PG Glass, Pretty Girls, MTN and Water Paradise.

This year's event will take place at Water Paradise, and all the competing powerboat classes, which include the Formula 1 boats, inflatables and the junior classes  all of which are running national events  will share a pitts area. For the Formula 1 boats, the Klerksdorp event will be the 8th round of their national championship series.

Team Cedar Vadec's Paul Shepard of Durban, acknowledged as the Golden Boy of Formula 1 powerboat racing, has won every single round of the championships for 2004/5, although locals will recall that he only finished 5th overall at the last Klerksdorp race. The Shepards are a family of Formula 1 fanatics, with dad Terry having been a F1 pilot 17 years ago, and his brother Robert now racing.

Robert Shepard (Team Crusader Carriers) wrote off his boat at the last round in East London, and the family have just purchased a DAC Italian hull, which he will make his debut in at Klerksfdorp. Nelspruit's Andre Kemp (Horizantal & Vertical Drilling) who had the massive crash with Robert, is working every night and every weekend on his very damaged hull to get it ready in time for the North-West race.

While Paul is on 120 championship points, former SA Champion Ian Mather (National Ports Authority) is lying second on 92 championship points, with his team-mate Lucky Hadebe lying fourth, one point behind Russell Chard, on 74 championship points. A Zulu who lives in Port Alfred, Hadebe has on several occasions led races this season and is knocking on the door for a race win.

Richards Bay pilot Russell Chard (Hire Anything) of Richards Bay, who won one of the three East London races,  is now hungry for a championship win and a chance to catch up to Mather, which he can only do if he wins the race and Mather does not earn points.

Another development driver, Kerwin Rampono of Team National Ports Authority, is lying fifth with three second placings to his name this season.

If the catfight between the two lady Formula 1 pilots at East London is anything to go by, spectators are in for a treat watching the very competitive 18 year old Vereeniging High matric pupil Sonja Brits (Mario Marine) and Sasolburg legal aid lawyer, Elzane de Jager (Remax). Of the four rounds which have taken place since De Jager joined the series, both have beaten the other twice, so the long knives (or claws) are expected to come out in Klerksdorp.

Two other pilots to keep an eye out for are Port Elizabeth's Brendan Kelly (Carrier Air Conditioners) and Witbank newcomer Clifford Momberg (Flender Power), who just seems to get better and better, having finished 7th overall at the last race, and a fourth place in the final heat.

The Klerksdorp Kwikfit Powerboat Grand Prix will offer spectators a plethora of entertainment including a display by South Africa's top aerobatic team,  the Shurlok Aerobatic Team from Gauteng, kiddies entertainment including a jumping castle, food and craft stalls which will benefit local businesses, a beer garden, helicopter rides, a 4x4 trail, quad bike races, a dance and fireworks show on Saturday night and much more. All proceeds raised will benefit the local community, and the local organisers, which include Festival Committee Chairman Elmarie Fuhrie of Kwik-fit and Sandy Botha of the Klerksdorp local municipality, plan on inviting some needy locals such as from old age homes to the event at no charge.

One of the highlights will be the National Ports Authority/Mercury development powerboat race at which local youngsters will participate. Training started three weeks ago, and will continue on Saturday 9 April between 10am and 2pm.

The final selection will take place this weekend, and the best ten youngsters aged 10 & 16 will get to race in the two-seater 'water mouse' boats powered by 15hp Mercury outboard engines at the national event. They will race in three races of 5 laps each, one on Saturday 16 April and two on Sunday 17 April 2005.

Admission will be R20 for adults, R20 for school children and pre-schoolers free of charge. The local organisers request that spectators please bring a tin of food, which will be distributed to local childrens and old age homes in the Klerksdorp area.
