By Lisa Rivett An earthquake hit the community of Stilfontein last month. It caused damage to the civic center as well as to residential areas. The result was that many residents have had their homes destroyed. These people have been evacuated and are still awaiting a decision about future housing subsidies. Yourcity wanted to know how residents of this community feel about what is happening. We asked residents what they think the Klerksdorp community should do for the displaced residents of Stilfontein. Locals are very concerned about the situation and many replied that it is important for the community to come together and show their support. Sylvia Kanahelo stated that, “it is in times like this that a community needs to stand together.” Others were concerned about the number of elderly people who were affected by the earthquake. These people were living in homes that they had retired in, and now they must find a new place to live. Hannetjie Visage suggested that more meetings be held to inform affected people exactly where they stand in terms of insurance claims. She pointed out that some residents could need help with other types of paperwork. Another concern was for the transportation of dislocated people. A number of Stilfontein residents had their cars damaged during the earthquake. Some elderly people may have no transportation at all. A lady from Stilfontein remarked that there was not even a bus system in the area for people to use. Most residents felt that the best thing that we can do is offer help and support where we can. They felt officials who are in charge of the situation should do everything to keep the people informed on a daily basis. Standard Bank has set up a relief fund. Please contact them if you would like to help. Thank you again to the people who took the time to answer Yourcity's questions. In two weeks the Your Opinion article will be running again. Read more about this in two weeks time! “Piano Boys” a Musical Extravaganza By Lisa Rivett “Piano Boys”, currently being shown at Tusk Rio Casino's Barnyard Theatre, wowed the audience with spectacular musical talent. The show takes spectators on a journey through the careers of superstars Elton John and Billy Joel. It is seen together with interesting facts about the stars, and loads of sensational music. The title of the performance is actually a bit misleading. “Piano Boys” involves a cast of seven outstanding musicians. Each performer is extremely talented and they all add a unique perspective that makes the show terrific. The cast was energetic and kept the audience on their feet singing and dancing from the beginning right up until the end of the show. It was wonderful to see the performers enjoying themselves as much as the audience. The costumes and musical selections of “Piano Boys” were great, but it was the vocal and instrumental talents of each performer that makes the show a hit. These harmonious performances provided the audience with a wonderful tribute to Elton John and Billy Joel. For those who have never experienced an opening night at the Barnyard Theatre, you are really missing out. Guests are greeted with a sugar-rimmed champagne glass of juice and there are complimentary snack plates on the tables. The atmosphere is very welcoming. Add that to the exceptional entertainment and you have a wonderful evening. But don' t worry if you missed opening night this time. On any night The Barnyard Theatre offers an energetic atmosphere with great live entertainment. It really is a fantastic choice for a night out with friends or family. “Piano Boys” runs until May 15 and it is best to book tickets in advance to avoid disappointment. Contact the Tusk Rio Casino at (018) 469-9100 for ticket details. It is an outstanding show that you can enjoy many times over. I know because I will be going again!
