Traffic Court Coming to KOSH

By Lisa Rivett

KOSH residents with a “need for speed” may want to think again before accelerating down the highway. The municipality of Klerksdorp has been awarded the right to establish a traffic court.

Over the past few months, the City Council has been investigating the viability of setting up a traffic court. A traffic court will cost the municipality a large sum of money; therefore officials wanted to be absolutely sure that this court will benefit the city. Research has shown that a traffic court would be civilly and economically beneficial to the area.

Establishing a traffic court will have many positive repercussions for the Klerksdorp municipality. The traffic court will handle all traffic violations such as speeding and drunk driving. It will also preside over defending municipal by-laws and small misdemeanors. By handling these types of cases, the traffic court will effectively lighten the burden of the Magistrate's Court.

The existing Magistrate Court has too many major cases to prosecute. As a result many of the smaller cases, such as traffic fines, were slipping through the cracks. Now, the traffic court will be handling all outstanding fines to ensure they are paid. This will be a huge plus for the Klerksdorp municipality in terms of income.

The traffic court intends on bringing about a major crackdown on minor offenders. Court will be open five days a week, including after-hours times, and some weekends. They will be conducting their own summoning and arresting of offenders. Deputy Manager of Public Safety, Anton Marais, feels this is a very positive development for the city.  People that are charged with offences like drunken or reckless driving will be brought to court immediately. Hopefully this will act as a strong deterrent for future offenders.

In addition to collecting fines and prosecuting petty crimes, the traffic court will also bring new employment to the area. The City Council will be in charge of appointing court clerks, interpreters and prosecutors.

The establishment of the Traffic Court is a huge coup for the Klerksdorp municipality. City Council has been working ardently to make this court a reality. Residents can now be thankful that traffic violators, who are making our roads unsafe, will be brought to justice.
