World Skills Champion from Klerksdorp

By Lisa Rivett

Rihan Serfontein received top honours from World Skills South Africa when he was chosen to represent the nation at the World Skills International competition in Helsinki, Finland.

World Skills South Africa is an association that promotes vocational education and training throughout the nation. Earlier this year they launched a national competition to determine the level of training in South Africa. Klerksdorp born, Rihan Sterfontein, was selected as one of the top three BOSCH apprentices in South Africa.

He competed against two other candidates over a three-week period of theory and practical tests. After the assessments were complete, Rihan was awarded first place in the competition. Quite an accomplishment for the 22-year old, who says the tests were very difficult, and he is extremely proud to be chosen as the best in South Africa.

On May 21st Rihan has the opportunity to represent South Africa at the International World Skills competition. The competition, held in Helsinki Finland, is a five-day event comprised of theory and practical testing. This is the first time South Africa will have the chance to partake in the event. Although he feels nervous about the competition, Rihan says he is very honored to be given the opportunity to represent South Africa.

Rihan has been employed with Diesellec in Klerksdorp for almost 3 years. Rihan did his training through Diesellec and says he really enjoys his work. Frans Erasmus, of Diesellec, stated that he was very proud of Rihan's accomplishment and is happy to have him as part of the Diesellec team.

Currently the biggest obstacle for Rihan to represent South Africa at the International World Skills competition in Finland is the R50, 000 it costs to enter the event. Anyone who is interested in supporting Rihan can contact Frans Erasmus at 018-462-2684 or 072-826-7808.
