Will Klerksdorp Be the Cleanest City 2005?

By Lisa Rivett

The City of Klerksdorp has been voted as the cleanest city in the North West province, and now aims to be the cleanest city in South Africa.

A National Evaluation Panel met at City Council's Civic Chambers to listen to a presentation on how the Klerksdorp community is “keeping clean”. Executive Mayor J.C. Nxamakele, who stated that the municipality is committed to the Cleanest City campaign at all levels, opened the presentation. He feels we can do even better in the competition this year. The Mayor believes that this campaign assists residents in changing their behavior towards keeping a healthy environment.

Klerksdorp's Municipal Manager T.Z. Mokhatla gave a brief overview of the Cleanest City campaign. He said that this competition was not about winning, but about promoting a safe and healthy environment that supports the well being of all members of the community. Mr.Mokhatla also stressed that not just one area, but all departments of City Council are working together as a team. He further stated that it was not only government, but private businesses are also supporting the Cleanest City ideal throughout the year. It is this winning combination that makes up the driving force behind the City of Klerksdorp's campaign.

MEC of Community Services, Morakane Mokoena delivered the presentation on the Cleanest City Campaign to the Panel. She stated that the community as a whole must take responsible measures to ensure that everyone has a clean and safe environment. One way to do this is by all areas of government working together to promote awareness and education of environmental issues. She identified several challenges involved with the campaign such as improper budgets, waste management, pollution control, and poverty alleviation. Departments in the City Council are working together to deal with each of these challenges. In summation Ms.Mokoena said that education and awareness were key factors to success. She stated that we, “should be a proud and clean nation, and protect the environment for future generations.”

After the presentation, the Panel took a tour through the KOSH community. They visited areas such as cemeteries, parks (developed and undeveloped), taxi ranks, sports facilities, public and private clinics, and landfill sites. Once they have evaluated all of the cities involved in the campaign, the winner will be announced on June 5th for World Environment Day. Everyone can help with this campaign and keep our city clean. Good luck Klerksdorp!
