Dining Out at Copacabana Street Café

By Lisa Rivett

Copacabana Street Cafe, located in the Tusk Rio Casino, was our stop for this week's investigation of Klerksdorp's eateries.

We were cheerfully greeted at the entrance to the restaurant by many of the staff, and promptly seated at a table. The atmosphere of Copacabana's is vivacious. Tables are decorated with bright colors. Large patio umbrellas and paintings of palm trees and parrots, makes you feel like you're on a tropical holiday. We were seated at a table situated in the middle of the restaurant and I was quite pleased to note that we could not hear the constant ringing of casino machines. Even with its bright and open atmosphere we were able to have a private dining experience.

On the weekends Copacabana's offers an all-you-can-eat buffet. The buffet includes various breads and cheeses, a selection of cold meats and salads, a variety of warm vegetables, different meat dishes as well as a carvery. There is also a large selection of desserts including pies, tarts, ice cream, and truffles. While the buffet looked scrumptious, we were there to test out the menu.  First came the drinks.  I ordered a non-alcoholic fruit cocktail that was a blend of various fruits and milk. Garnished with fresh fruit it was delicious, but drinks more like a smoothie than juice. My guest had “Double Jeopardy” which was made with Frangelico and Sambuca.  This was blended with milk and topped with ice cream and chocolate sauce. The result was a chocolaty, nutty creation that was not overpowered by the Sambuca. We gave it a thumbs-up for taste and originality.

Our appetizer was the Ceviche. This was a salad-like mixture of poached fish, tomatoes, spring onion, and peppers displayed on a bed of fresh crisp lettuce. The perfect choice for an appetizer as the ceviche was not too filling.  Definitely a nice change from other dishes that comes hidden in an overly rich cream sauce.

The main course was Fillet Steak and Marrow Sauce served with roasted baby potatoes, grilled beets and carrots, and baked cauliflower with cheese. The presentation was wonderful and the plates were decorated with a handmade tomato flower and cucumber leaves. The portions were excellent and even my guest could not finish all of his food. I am also extremely pleased to report that the steaks were perfectly cooked to medium rare.  Too often I end up with a steak cooked to medium or rare, neither of which I expect. The Marrow Sauce was also excellent. I did not notice it on the menu, but I highly recommend you ask the waiter for it.

For dessert we tasted the Mocha Chocolate cake. It was served garnished with chocolate shavings and fresh fruit on a plate dusted with sugar. Light in texture, it was rich in chocolate taste. If you are a choc-o-holic this is the dessert for you.

Overall the food was excellent, especially the steak. I would like to make a special reference to the service, in particular our waitress, Jacky Moorcroft. Our service was fantastic. The food was delivered on time, yet we were not rushed.  Plates and glasses were taken from the table, as we were finished with them. She was friendly and out-going and answered all of our questions about the menu.  This was the best service I've encountered at a restaurant in a very long time. I would definitely recommend Copacabana Street Cafe for food and service.

Your Opinion

By Lisa Rivett

Yourcity hits the streets again to find out what our readers think. This time our question was, “What do you think Klerksdorp is lacking?”

We had a variety of responses to this question. Many of you feel that there is not enough places for people over 23 to “hang out”. Some of you suggested we need more cafes to relax at on the weekends, while others thought there should be more lounges geared for an older crowd.

Better shopping was also an answer, and residents would like a larger variety of stores in Klerksdorp.

On a more serious note, some felt that KOSH residents need a more positive attitude towards life. In addition to this, it was suggested that this attitude should start with those in leadership positions. Community leaders should set an example of positive living and responsible leadership.

More educational programs for children were also listed as an area where Klerksdorp falls behind. People feel that there are not enough after-school programs such as ballroom dancing or science clubs for children. It was suggested that the city should have a recreational center that caters to school children.

Some worry that we do not have enough orphanages and old-age homes. To help solve this problem, residents would like to see the government get more involved. This involvement could come from more subsidies, or pro-active lobbying to support existing centers.

Thank you very much to everyone who agreed to be interviewed for this article. Check out Your Opinion in two weeks and find out what residents do to chase away “winter blues”. You can email your winter warmer ideas to lisa@yourcity.co.za
