Council Supports Environment

City Council is taking a stand to educate people about the importance of having a clean and healthy environment.

The first annual Environment Expo was held at the Klerksdorp Auditorium on Tuesday, June 7 in conjunction with World Environment Day (June 5) and South African Environment Week (June 5-12).

The objective of the expo was to educate school children and community representatives about the environment.

The Manager of Community Services, Ms. Germina Masilo, opened the Expo with a welcome speech. She reminded the audience that as South Africans, we have a constitutional right to a clean and healthy environment. She also briefly spoke about how the entire community can become involved in caring for the environment.

Deputy Manager of Community Services, Ms. Morakane Mokoena, followed this with a presentation on the importance of educating people about the environment. Visitors to the expo can take what they have learned and share it with others at school and in the community. Everyone has the power and the choice to prevent the destruction of the environment. People need to examine what negatively impacts the environment and learn how to modify their behavior.

Ms. Mokoena brought the issue closer to home and presented some slides depicting areas in the KOSH community. On the positive side, pictures of Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve were shown as an example of positive conservation. This gave viewers a chance to see a local eco-system operating in harmony.

On the negative side, slides of the Vaal River area displayed how invading plants, that may look beautiful, are harmful to the environment. Ms. Mokoena explained that these plants deplete the water of oxygen that can result in killing fish and insects.

Spectators were also shown pictures of illegal dumping sites. It is a problem in our community and contributes to environmental damage such as air pollution, and soil contamination. Changing people's attitudes and teaching them how to look after their waste properly are key factors to solving this problem.

In closing, Cllr DJ Massie, MMC of Community Services, said that these environmental challenges are new to most people. What we need to do now is learn from those who are experts in the field. We can use their influence and knowledge to teach others what to do, and let the information be spread so that everyone can do their part in achieving a clean and healthy environment.
