Inmates With Golden Voices

The North West Province Department of Correctional Services staged a choral music competition for offenders on June 14, at Mmabatho Convention Centre.

Seven Correctional Centres from the province participated in the event. The competition was tough as all participants gave sterling performances. The Mafikeng Satellite Unit emerged victorious by scooping first position among male singers in both African and English songs.

Potchefstroom Correctional Centre represented Klerksdorp Management Area and came second to Zeerust Correctional Centre in the mixed choir category. The Centre was nevertheless awarded a first place trophy for the African Song “Africa e a opela” in the very same category.

One of the three adjudicators, Kenny Ditsi, congratulated the inmates and said there was great potential among them. He suggested the Management Areas try to obtain assistance from local choral music experts to improve the inmates' abilities. He further urged them to participate in choral music after their release.

Klerksdorp Area Commissioner, Dineo Ratshikana, also encouraged inmates to take part in music and other recreational activities.

The competition was part of Correctional Services' drive towards the rehabilitation of offenders under the Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation Directorate. It also aimed to prepare singers for the Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West regional events that will be held in Witbank, Mpumalanga on July 6.
