Lisa Rivett Klerksdorp's own Eric Storbeck and Jaco Koekemoer are living life in the fast lane as driver and navigator of Garden Pavilion's Rally Car Racing team. Currently Eric and Jaco are racing in the National Circuit. This series of competitions started in February in Natal and finishes in October with the Great North Rally in Limpopo. The team has accomplished a lot since they began racing. In the beginning, although they were racing well, they could not seem to finish an event due to mechanical problems. Finally at the Sasol Rally, which runs from Nelspruit to Sabie in Mpumalanga, the team's luck changed. Upon entering the last stage of the race Eric and Jaco were ranked 13th overall and 3rd in their class. With only 1.1 km to go Team Garden Pavilion was feeling pretty good about their standing. Unfortunately, just as the cars were pulling away from the start line, Eric and Jaco experienced some mechanical difficulties. Despite a broken CV joint and a tire that was falling off, they finished the race and placed 33rd overall and 4th in their class. They were the first of the private class competitors to finish the race. Team Garden Pavilion is a private team that races against production teams. They compete in the A7 class, which groups them with others having the second largest car size. They are looking forward to a high standing in the finals. Of course none of this would be possible without the enormous support from the team's sponsors. They would like to thank Cam Auto Clinic, Strauss and Van Der Walt Attorneys, Karstens Panel beaters, Irrigate, Garden Pavilion, Lombaard Tyres, and Ellaton Mining Supplies. Eric and Jaco would also like to say a very special thank you to their families who have been so supportive of their racing. Next the team will be heading to the Volkswagen Rally in Port Elizabeth this July. You can watch them on Super Sport during the South African Rally Championships. They have already been seen on Super Sport at least 7 times and will continue to make Klerksdorp proud with their excellent racing skills. Anyone interested in supporting the team should contact Eric Storbeck at 083 453 1251, or Jaco Koekemoer at 084 727 2918 for more information. Lisa Rivett Rihan Serfontein, who is employed with Diesellec in Klerksdorp, has just returned from the World Skills International Competition that was held in Helsinki, Finland. He received an award for obtaining the highest points of all South African competitors. The World Skills International Competition was established to promote vocational education and training. 45 Countries from around the world participated in the event. This was the first time South Africa was represented in the Automotive Technologies category. The competition took place over 2 weeks where candidates participated in orientation seminars, skills competitions and some sightseeing. The 22 year old from Klerksdorp said it was very exciting to be part of an international event. He enjoyed meeting different people from all over the world. Of the competition itself, Rihan admitted it was extremely challenging. There were 25 countries competing in his class of Automotive Technologies. Rihan placed 17th overall, quite a great achievement considering Rihan has only finished his level 2 (of 4) and is not a fully certified technician like other competitors. Also the tests were done on Volvos, and as a BOSCH mechanic, Rihan had to learn all about Volvos in 4 days. The next National World Skills Competition will be held in August of next year. Although Rihan will not be competing in the event, he will be there to assist as a trainer. He will also be on hand to offer advice to those who will be representing South Africa at the next International World Skills Competition held in Japan in 2007.
