Executive Mayor's Bursary Fund to Empower Youth Lisa Rivett On June 23 Klerksdorp Executive Mayor Jaycee Nxamakele launched a Bursary Fund to help disadvantaged youths have access to higher education. Councilors, youth leaders, and members of the business community attended the Bursary Launch. The evening began on a high note with the Nkanmalele Choir and “the three tenors” singing the national anthem. South African pride echoed throughout the room in tune with the exceptional singing. The Bursary Fund has been established in response to the needs of the municipality's youth. Executive Mayor Jaycee Nxamakele stated that the purpose of this fund is to open the doors of learning and culture for many who may not otherwise have this chance. He also said that funding would be allocated for student arrears to assist institutions like Vuselela College that are close to home. The Executive Mayor then introduced the Bursary Committee who will assist in fund allocation and assessing the situation of each candidate. Kabelo Mataboge, Chairperson of the North West Youth Commission was the event's Guest Speaker. He was very supportive of the Mayor's Bursary Fund and said it complements the government mandates of job creation and youth employment. Youth Employment has been a great challenge due to lack of skills development and proper education. With programs like the Mayor's Bursary Fund, disadvantaged youths will have access to higher education and will be able to realize their dreams. In conclusion Kabelo Mataboge stated that it is also the community's responsibility to make it “fashionable” to be educated. Young people should take pride in having a higher education and see it as a window to limitless opportunities. The Chairperson of the North West Chapter of the South African Women's Empowerment Network followed the guest speaker in asking for the support of the business community. Many in attendance immediately stepped up to the challenge and donated to this worthy cause. Overall the evening held a valuable message for everyone. The youth are our future and we need to help them achieve their greatest potential. Guests were entertained by beautiful music and inspirational speeches. There was a tremendous spirit of support for this program. As Guest Speaker Kabelo Mataboge said, “The Executive Mayor and the municipality deserve a big round of applause for implementing such a worthwhile program.” Flu season is here and many people are finding themselves slowed down by a cold.
