R4 MILLION FOR DETAILED PUBLIC TRANSPORT PLAN FOR 2010

Some R4 million has been approved by the Minister of Finance for a detailed design plan for a public transport system in Klerksdorp for 2010.

The proposal for funding that was put forward on 24 May this year, was well received in the sense that a committee of the National Department of Transport, screening applications for funding,  saw in it, a community ready to make some significant upgrades to its public transport infrastructure, but not a clear and strategic vision about how to do it.  Thus, rather than recommend funding for the projects proposed, the committee recommended funding to do much better planning as an initial 05/06 activity.

The intention of the committee was to see Klerksdorp get some high quality professional assistance in its public transport planning.

Projects that was included in the initial request for funding were amongst others, assistance for the compilation of an Integrated Transport Plan for the Southern District, the upgrading of public transport infrastructure, improvement of the Taxi Rank facility in Klerksdorp, passenger interchange facilities, public passenger terminal facilities, closed circuit television surveillance on the sidewalks and bicycle paths to the stadium, improvement of a bus transport system and the development of an airport-city link from the PC Pelser Airport.

An application is now being prepared for the city to access funding from the Public Transport Infra- structure Funds: Legacy Funds. This funding will enable cities to have transportation success for the 2010 Fifa World Cup and create a lasting legacy for public transport.
