Anglogold Ashanti quarterly briefing

Anglogold Ashanti quarterly community briefing session was held on Tuesday 2 August with positive feedback. Anglogold Ashanti Executive Officer, Robbie Lazare gave a presentation on the results for the quarter that ended and overall it looks good for Anglogold Ashanti with production increases at three of their South African mines. The fatality rates also drop down to 50% for this quarter. Lazare commented that safety is very important to Anglogold Ashanti and that he would like to see no fatalities at all.

Anglogold Ashanti is also concentrating on their ABET (Adult basic education training) and has to date, trained 15 000 employees. Lazare said Anglogold Ashanti is looking at making their ABET program also available to the community, Anglogold Ashanti wants communities to be better off, because of their involvement. They are also concentrating on the HIV/Aids problem and would like to see 15 % of their work force tested and educated in HIV/Aids in 2005.

The chairman of the local area committee, Mr Daan Adlem gave a presentation on the support that Anglogold Ashanti has given to the Stilfontein community. Adlem pointed out that Anglogold Ashanti has been involved since the earth quake earlier this year with feeding funds, hostel housing to name a few. The total of funds raised for the unemployed was R 398 324 going to everyone in the community and not just the Stilfontein residents. Anglogold has also established a new committee to manage the Stilfontein Disaster funds and included local government, social services and the national union for mine workers.
