The town of Klerksdorp is in shock after its former mayor, Andries "Jaycee" Nxamakele, shot his wife and two young children before killing himself. Nxamakele shot and killed his six-year-old son Nkululeko, his five-year-old daughter Sabelo and his 39-year-old wife Nokhaya at their Jouberton, North West, home at the weekend. Nxamakele's two older children were not at home when the incident occurred on Saturday evening. According to Inspector Sam Tselanyane, police spokesperson for the Mooi River area, the couple had a domestic problem prior to the shooting. "Our investigations indicate that Nxamakele first shot the two children and then his wife," Tselanyane said. Before killing himself, Nxamakele left the family home and went to a neighbour's house. "There he told his neighbours that he had shot and killed his family and that he was going to kill himself. "They apparently tried to talk him out of it but he did not respond. Instead he just walked out of the neighbour's house and back to his own home. "A few minutes later the neighbours say they heard a shot," Tselanyane said, adding that they then called the police. Police arriving at the scene found all the bodies in the television room of the home. The children had suffered single shots to the forehead. Nxamakele's wife, who was found lying face down, was also shot in the head, but a postmortem will be done to determine where the bullet entered. Meanwhile, Dr Magome Mafike, whom Nxamakele replaced as mayor of Klerksdorp in 2004, said he was shocked and disappointed by the incident. “Jaycee was the regional secretary of the ANC in the North West for a number of years and was used to tackling problems. "We would assume that he would be able to overcome personal problems as well. This is very surprising," he said. During his two years as mayor, Nxamakele launched, among other things, a bursary fund to help disadvantaged youth's access higher education and also hosted a summit dedicated to the growth of Klerksdorp and surrounding areas. North West MEC for developmental local government and housing Phenye Vilakazi said he was shocked by the incident. Vilakazi, who visited the scene, said the tragedy was one of the most devastating he had heard of in his life. He sent out his condolences to the Nxamakele family. The MEC's spokesperson Mandla Mathebula said it was not yet known what led to the shooting. "The MEC is busy speaking to comrades, neighbours and family," Mathebula said. Nxamakele was City of Matlosana mayor from 2000 until March 2006 when he was not nominated for the mayoral post. He served as an ordinary councillor in extension six, Jouberton. Mathebula said funeral arrangements had not been confirmed. Edna Molewa, the North West premier, has sent a message of condolence to the family of the former mayor. Molewa has called on the the residents of Matlosana to remain calm. The Premier says this comes as a big blow the ANC in the province.
