Clarity over cost of funeral

On 14 September, our Honorable Executive Mayor, Mr. China Dodovu invited all members of the media to his press release regarding his statement on the death of CLR Jaycee Nxamakele and his family.  His reason for his late response to the media and community regarding the tragedy was first and fore mostly in respect of the deceased and the mourning family members and friends.

Even though Dodovu could not offer any resolutions to the reasons of the tragedy, he took it upon himself to try and justify the emotions within our community, by releasing a statement on 13 September.  He has asked that the police be allowed to continue with their investigation and forensic audit, which may take up to three months, so that, in the interest of the public, a final deliberation on the deaths of the Nxamakele family can be attained.  Until then he chooses not to speculate but to support the police and fellow council members by waiting patiently for the answers.

On the question of the R80 000 used for Mr. Jaycee Nxamakele funeral, Dodovu informed the media that a full account of the expenses would be made available by the committees of various counselors, that were set up by the council, to cover the funeral as soon as their report was completed.  Dodovu said that part of the money was used to transport mourners to the funeral, especially those who could not afford any transport.  He felt that this was a good thing to do because we as a community could not expect Nxamakele’s family to cover the costs of not only the family, but also thousands of mourners attending the funeral.

Dodovu also stated that in his culture it was expected of the family to provide all the visitors with a meal after the funeral and thus the council provided them with assistance. There were further costs incurred with regard to publicity, media, communication and also flowers. Dodovu assured the public that it was in the best interest of transparency to make all the details of these expenses available, once the report was completed.  It was a very compassionate Dodovu who felt strongly that since Nxamakele was a leader in the community, and previously the Mayor, it's was a honorable decision to make, that the council support the family in their time of need.

Even though Nxamakele was not a statesman, it does not mean we do not have to honour him in his death, and the untimely and tragic death of his family. With regards to the allegations of the Council using the money to buy T-shirts, Dodovu made it very clear that all the attending organizations, such as the ANC and others had T-shirts printed and they were financed by their own organizations and not by the Municipality.  However Dodovu said that there were some of the ushers and workers that were working at the funeral that wore t-shirts subsidised by the municipality. He was conclusive in saying that Corruption is an evil that must be fought daily if we want to construct a better future for our City and Country, and that he holds Our City's Future in his best interests and as his number one priority.
