North West on high alert after deadly TB outbreak The North West government says it has been monitoring the outbreak of the Multi Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) at Klerksdorp since the disease was detected in the province last month. Ten cases of the extreme drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) have been reported in North West. "Whenever we identify a case we screen the affected person's immediate family members to check if they are infected or not," Molala said. He said community health workers and district TB co- ordinators were monitoring their areas, especially in the Bojanala district where three of the reported cases were identified and the Bophirima and the Kosh areas. Four people have since died from the disease said Nomonde Rasmeni, the North West provincial MEC for health. Spokesperson Molala said that the four died way before the beginning of this year, with the latest two deaths recorded between July and September this year. Six others were being monitored at the Tshepong hospital complex in Klerksdorp where a specialised multi-drug resistance unit has been established. "This is not a new case, we've had these incidents since 2002 and we encourage people to finish their treatment." Rasmeni says the disease is evenly spread in the province. People can get MDR-TB by defaulting treatment or by direct infection. She says as many as 14% of the provincial TB patients default treatment and that is why it is so important that all TB patients get all the support from their families and communities to complete the full course of treatment. "The department will have no choice but to hospitalise defaulters to ensure that they get cured. In Gauteng the Health Department has located the woman diagnosed with the deadly strain of extremely drug resistant tuberculosis, or XDR-TB. But it's not yet clear whether she will agree to be admitted for treatment. The woman is believed to be the first person diagnosed with XDR-TB in Gauteng. The woman discharged herself from the hospital after she refused further treatment. But the department of health has a court interdict on standby should she refuse to co-operate. They will invoke the necessary legislation that allows government to forcefully treat patients that pose a public health risk. The Northern Cape Health Department has become the latest province to report a confirmed case of Extreme Drug Resistant Tuberculosis - XDR-TB. Dr Dion Theys, a provincial medical director, says a 44-year-old man from Upington has been diagnosed with the disease. He says the victim's wife has the Multi-Drug Resistant strain - MDR-TB. The strain has killed more than 50 people in KwaZulu-Natal who has the highest number of reported incidents and a total of 74 people have died since last year. Of the people who had died from the XDR strain in KwaZulu-Natal, 44 were HIV positive with CD4 counts well below 200 - the level at which anti-retroviral treatment should begin. Provinces effected by XDR-TB is Gauteng, Norh West, Free State, Northern Cape and Kwa Zulu-Natal. Sapa The expenditure of the public money for the funeral of CLR.
