Presidential Imbizo a Success!

03 November not only marked the start of “International Day for No violence against Woman and Children”, but also a special visit by President Thabo Mbeki to Khuma.

Mbeki and other Premiers, Mayors, Ministers and MEC's, addressed and interacted with local members of the community during the Imbizo held at Khuma. The community were given a chance to raise their issues to the President and offer solutions. Many issues were brought to light by members of the community, such as Governments Promises that have not been kept, Housing, Sanitary, Transport  Roads and Water problems. Corruption in higher and local government and how it affects the citizens. The high cost for Municipal services. Police services not efficient and some being corrupt.  Unemployment in smaller rural areas. Woman and child abuse. Crisis in Alabama. Unjustified dismissals to name but a few.

The Premier, Edna Molewa and other ministers, in turn responded to questions raised and addresses the people on how they would approach these matters.

As President Mbeki spoke to the crowd, they listened in silence.  He thanked them for being there; he applauded our Mayor, China Dodovu with the initiative of AGENDA 16 and the involvement of the community. He assured the people that they were there to listen to them and not to speak, to listen to their advice and to hear how they saw things.

“Mbeki expressed his concern about woman and child abuse. He said that they did not fight for freedom so that they could abuse woman and children, but so that woman and children could lead a better life.” He closed off by saying, “That it does not matter in which town or city he sleeps tonight, because he would be sleeping in South Africa, and as we go away here today, we now know about the needs of the people and will reply by fixing and paying more attention to the matters raised” - By  Inge Olivier
