Fire Safety This Winter

The North West Province is a summer rainfall area so this leaves the area dry in winter, leading to many bush fires, as Klerksdorp residents may have noticed lately. Since we also have to keep our homes warm on chilly evenings, the problems of fire and fire safety needs to be addressed. Here are some safety tips to help prevent fires in your homes, and ensure you to stay warm and safe this winter.

In rural areas, to protect your home from bush fires, create a safety zone around your home by clearing flammable vegetation. Keep your roof clear of leaves and debris. Never throw burning cigarettes from your car. It also helps to discuss community fire safety with your neighbours.

Matches or lighters can be deadly in the hands of a child, so use child resistant lighters and store all matches and lighters out of reach, preferably in a locked cupboard.

Portable and space heaters can be either electric or fuelled by gas, liquid or solid fuel. All types must be placed at least 1 meter away from anything that can burn, such as bedding, clothing, pets and people.

Never leave heaters operating when you are not in the room or when you go to sleep. Don't leave children or pets unattended with heaters, and be sure everyone understands that drying clothing or placing combustibles over heaters is a fire hazard.

If you have an electric heater check each season for fraying or splitting wires and overheating. Have all problems repaired by a professional before operating the heater.

Follow the same safety rules for wood stoves as you would for heaters. Burn only wood, and be sure the wood stove is placed on a solid, non-flammable surface to protect the floor from heat and hot
