International Championship

The highly anticipated fight between IBF World Junior Lightweight Champion, Mzonke Fana - the Rose of Khayelitsha - and Argentinean Challenger Javier Alvarez will be taking place this Friday, 31 August at the Banquet Hall at the Matlosana City Council.

Boxing promoter Branco Milenkovic, founder of Branco Sports Productions, said at a pre-fight press conference on 28 August that it has been a long time since so many boxing champs have been gathered in one place for a fight, and that boxers have come from all areas of South Africa for this one-night-only Championship match.

Reigning champ Mzonke Fana vowed to defend his title and oblige his fans with a one round knock-out win, while challenger Javier Alvarez has high hopes for a winning match.

This is Javier's first time in South Africa and he told Yourcity he found the people of Klerksdorp friendly and welcoming. He is also grateful for the opportunity to fight for this World Championship title. He added that despite the outcome of the fight, he would like to return to our city - not to fight again, but to relax on holiday!

No one was keen to predict a winner this early and no doubt the 12-round boxing match will be close, but Yourcity was given a tip by another promoter of Fridays event, none other than boxing champ Baby Jakes Matlala  -  the Rose of Khayelitsha - has what it takes to win and will defend his title with determination.

A further six fights will be taking place on the same day, with the South African Bantamweight Champion Simphiwe Vetyeka defending his title against Bloemfontein hopeful Ebenezer Tumane in a 12 round match. Further fights will take place between boxers from across the country, in categories from Junior Lightweight to International Catch weight.

Matlosana Executive Mayor China Dodovu wished all the boxers competing on Friday the best of luck, and added that Klerksdorp should be proud to be seen taking boxing forward in this province.-By Elizabeth Okes
